We’re looking for an Assistant Environmental Consultant to work on our Environment & Ecology team.


Location: Birmingham – This role offers hybrid working, combining office and site attendance with home-based working.

Contract Type: Permanent

Salary: £28,000 - £38,000 Depending on experience


As an Assistant Environmental Consultant, you will support the delivery of utilities and infrastructure projects by assisting with environmental management, compliance, and risk mitigation across both design and construction phases. Working alongside experienced environmental professionals, you'll help ensure projects meet environmental requirements and are delivered responsibly and efficiently.


This is an entry-level opportunity, and we welcome applications from individuals looking to start or develop their career in the environmental sector. You'll gain hands-on experience across live utilities and infrastructure projects while developing the skills, knowledge, and experience needed to progress into an Environmental Consultant role


Responsibilities

  • Support the delivery of environmental requirements across utilities and infrastructure projects during both design and construction phases.
  • Assist in identifying environmental constraints, risks, and practical mitigation measures.
  • Help prepare and maintain environmental management plans, permits, and project documentation.
  • Support environmental compliance activities, ensuring adherence to legislation, permits, and best practice.
  • Undertake site inspections and audits, monitoring environmental performance and highlighting any issues.
  • Collect and manage environmental data, maintaining accurate records and reporting.
  • Work closely with design teams, site teams, and subcontractors to integrate environmental considerations into project delivery.
  • Assist with the preparation of technical reports and environmental assessments.

About you

  • Degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Geography, or a related discipline
  • Basic understanding of environmental legislation, regulations, and permitting relevant to UK infrastructure projects
  • Awareness of key environmental topics (e.g. pollution prevention, water management, waste, air quality, ecology interfaces)
  • Some practical experience through placements, internships, or project work (e.g. environmental assessments, site-based work, or reporting)
  • Ability to collect, record, and manage environmental data accurately
  • Good written and verbal communication skills for reporting and working with multidisciplinary teams
  • Willingness to visit sites and work in outdoor or construction environments as required
  • Full UK driving licence

Responsibilities

  • Undertake habitat and protected species surveys, working independently where appropriate and in line with best practice methodologies.
  • Plan and deliver survey activities, including organising resources, timings, and survey requirements.
  • Collect, analyse, and interpret ecological data to inform assessments and project decisions
  • Prepare and contribute to technical reports (e.g. survey reports, EcIAs, method statements) to a high standard.
  • Produce and review ecological mapping and data outputs using tools such as GIS.
  • Ensure survey work and deliverables comply with relevant legislation, guidance, and industry standards.
  • Support and contribute to the design and implementation of mitigation and enhancement measures.

About the role…

As a Project Manager in our Non-Infra team, you’ll be responsible for the end-to-end delivery of projects in both water treatment and wastewater treatment, overseeing all on-site activities in line with framework requirements. You’ll proactively manage risks, identifying potential issues early and implementing timely solutions to ensure safe, on-time, and within-budget delivery. You’ll lead projects to the highest professional standards, coordinating internal teams and supply chain partners, and managing every stage of the project lifecycle in close collaboration with Avove’s clients, local authorities, and other stakeholders.


Location: Given the nature of the role, we will consider applications from candidates located throughout the Severn Trent region. (East and West Midlands)

Salary: £48,000 - £63,000 Depending on experience

Responsibilities:

  • Monitor delivery and financial performance against the programme, identifying risks early and taking corrective action to maintain budget and timelines.
  • Plan, coordinate, and supervise the programme of work, ensuring all activities align with contract scope and framework requirements.
  • Prepare monthly Cost Value Reconciliation (Forecast) documents and present them to senior management.
  • Regularly monitor progress and facilitate collaborative planning sessions to challenge durations and identify opportunities.

About the role:

Due to continued growth, we are seeking a Mechanical Technical Manager to join our expanding Design team. Within this role, you will act as the Mechanical Discipline Technical Authority, ensuring the quality, consistency, and integrity of mechanical designs across complex projects and frameworks.

You will provide independent technical governance, ensuring all outputs meet regulatory standards, client requirements, and internal processes. As the escalation point for complex or high-risk engineering decisions, you will drive best practice and champion the consistent application of engineering standards across all deliverables.


Salary: £64,000 - £78,000 (Depending on experience)

Location: Due to the nature of the role, we welcome applications from candidates within a reasonable commuting distance of any of our office locations, located within the Midlands, North West, North East, and Glasgow.


Responsibilities:

  • Provide technical leadership for mechanical design across projects and frameworks
  • Act as Technical Authority for complex or high-risk engineering decisions
  • Review and approve designs, calculations, specifications, and risk assessments
  • Ensure compliance with standards, regulations, and internal governance
  • Lead design reviews and deliver independent technical assurance
  • Support project teams to deliver coordinated, buildable, and compliant solutions
  • Contribute to bids, client engagement, and commercial decision-making
  • Mentor and develop engineers, supporting capability and career progression
  • Drive best practice in safety, sustainability, and whole-life performance
  • Promote innovation, digital engineering, and continuous improvement

Skills/experience Required:

  • Degree in Mechanical Engineering (IMechE accredited or equivalent)
  • Chartered Engineer (CEng) with IMechE or a recognised professional body or experience to achieve accreditation.
  • Significant experience in mechanical design within the water and utilities sector
  • Strong knowledge of mechanical systems, including pumping, pipework, and treatment processes
  • Proven track record of leading multidisciplinary teams on complex infrastructure projects
  • In-depth understanding of UK standards, CDM 2015, and relevant design codes
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to produce clear and authoritative technical documentation
  • Full UK driving licence
