About the role:
The National Oceanography Centre is an international leader in the development and application of coastal-ocean numerical models and shelf sea science. We are looking to recruit an applied coastal-ocean modeller to work in the Marine Data Products Team at the NOC in Liverpool. The successful applicant will work on developing, testing and applying the wide range of ocean models including in-house developed code, community developed models such as NEMO and other hydrodynamic models to meet the diverse range of commercial requirements.
- responding to commercial and academic requests for coastal modelling work for a wide range of physical parameters, primarily focusing on tides and storm surges.
- working with models to meet a variety of client requirements, such as tide modelling, storm surge modelling, particle tracking and oil/chemical spill modelling across a wide range of industry sectors.
- developing new regional models for areas of the world where there is a commercial demand.
- developing software tools to make the setting up of models a more efficient process.
- working directly with clients to deal with technical enquiries relating to ocean modelling.
You will also work closely with other organisations such as the Met Office to ensure that the NOC has the appropriate data available to be able to handle a wide range of commercial projects and carry out any appropriate data processing, analysis and interpretation of data to meet end-user requirements.
This post is offered on NERC terms and conditions and is available for 2 years.
This is a Band 6 position and the starting salary will be £28,200 per annum and depending upon skills and experience, a salary uplift and/or additional allowances may be available for exceptional candidates.
About youThe successful candidate will be a highly motivated, enthusiastic and outgoing ocean modeller with an eagerness to work in a team and take on a diverse range of modelling challenges. You will be highly numerate, have a PhD or equivalent research record and knowledge of shelf sea physical oceanographic processes. You will have a degree in physical sciences, mathematics or oceanography and demonstrated programming skills. Good written and verbal communication skills are essential. A proven ability in scientific publication would be advantageous.

Overview: Post-doctoral researcher positions will be joint between Schlumberger Cambridge Research and British Antarctic Survey.
Responsibilities- Collaborate with the Seismic Data Acquisition and Processing group at Schlumberger Cambridge Research and the Polar Oceans programme at the British Antarctic Survey to develop methods for ocean current estimation.
- Review and develop inverse mathematical model methods to invert dynamic streamer measurements (such as tension, shape, and lateral steering forces) for local ocean current estimates at scales of tens of metres to a few kilometres.
- Improve existing code and test it on modelled and real data. Integrate current models with independent ancillary oceanographic data from shipboard and satellite sources to investigate submesoscale processes in the ocean and their parameterisation in climate models.
The successful candidate will have a Ph.D. or equivalent experience in mathematics, fluid dynamics or physics, and preferably a knowledge of geophysical methods. Considerable numerical mathematical and programming skills are required as well as handling large volumes of real data.
Duration2 year fixed term appointment.

The Carbon Budget Scientist (in MPOC) is part of the NERC-funded ABC-fluxes project (Atlantic BiogeoChemical fluxes – You will synthesise Argo data, GO-SHIP observations and data from moored sensors and samplers on the RAPID array at 26.5°N to understand the strength and variability of nutrient and carbon transports across the section and their controls of ocean carbon uptake in the North Atlantic. You should have experience of analysing biogeochemical and/or physical observations.
TermThis is a Fixed Term Appointment, with funding on a full-time basis for three years offered on NERC terms and conditions and open to internal and external candidates. We welcome applications for full and part-time working.

Overview
The British Antarctic Survey is inviting applications for an observational physical oceanographer with a track record of interpreting and analysing observational polar oceanographic datasets. The successful candidate will use observational datasets and numerical model output to construct and test a dynamical framework explaining the circulation of the Weddell Gyre and its export of dense water to the global ocean.
PurposeThis is a 36 month position for a suitably qualified postdoctoral researcher and will contribute to two projects funded by the European Commission H2020 programme and Natural Environment Research Council (NERC): SO-CHIC (Southern Ocean Carbon and Heat Impact on Climate) and ORCHESTRA (Ocean regulation of climate by Heat and Carbon sequestration and Transports).
These projects both require the assembly, analysis and synthesis of Weddell Sea datasets from a variety of platforms and national programmes. The postholder will need to demonstrate that they have training/experience in working with observational datasets from various sources and using them to examine regional ocean dynamics. They will work with in situ and satellite observations from a variety of platforms operated by project partners, including moorings, gliders, drifters, ship and seal hydrography and satellite altimetry. These will be combined alongside numerical model output to provide a synthesis view of Weddell Gyre variability and change in response to external forcing. The combined datasets will be used to develop and test a gyre scale dynamical framework as well as to validate and tune models developed by partners within SO-CHIC. The dynamical framework will also need to integrate the impact of the Weddell polynya upon gyre circulation, and the candidate will need to work alongside SO-CHIC and ORCHESTRA collaborators explicitly modelling the region.
QualificationsPhD in Ocean/Climate Dynamics or equivalent postgraduate experience
Duties- Combine observational data to examine Weddell Gyre dynamics and interpret model output in the region.
- Attend SO-CHIC/ORCHESTRA project meetings and engage with associated project partners to deliver the project objectives
- Lead high-quality publications resulting from the project

Postdoctoral Research Assistant in Ocean Wave Mechanics – Oxford. Department of Engineering Science, Parks Road, Oxford. The project is funded by EPSRC and NERC and is fixed-term for 8 months. The position is supervised by Professor Thomas Adcock and Professor Ton van den Bremer and focuses on water wave mechanics, with emphasis on the interaction of long and short gravity waves. The project will analyse experimental data from Shanghai Jiao Tong University and outputs from numerical modelling done in Oxford.
Responsibilities- Perform data analysis of experimental wave data and numerical model outputs.
- Contribute to the interpretation of results and the dissemination of findings.
- Collaborate within the Environmental Fluid Mechanics group and manage aspects of the research project as appropriate.
- PhD/DPhil (or near completion) in engineering, oceanography or mathematics.
- Specialist knowledge of ocean wave mechanics or closely related area.
- Excellent communication skills and ability to work well as part of a research team; ability to manage own research.
- Experience with fully nonlinear potential flow solvers (e.g., Oceanwave3D or HOS solvers) is desirable.
