We\'re growing quickly and we\'re backed by Europe\'s leading start-up accelerator, Entrepreneur First, as well as the founders of Metaswitch and Ustwo.

Our company was founded by scientists and engineers. You\'ll be joining our already technical team working at the intersection of neuroscience, physiology, and machine learning. We\'re a small team, so you\'ll need to be diverse in your work patterns at the beginning. But this also means that there will be many exciting challenges, personal development, and the opportunity to forge your own projects within the company.

At a high level, you\'ll be focussed on the following:

Responsibilities
  • Machine learning on big data. The first version of our software is live on devices across the world. This means biometric data on our servers. With 50,000 subjects in our database (and growing), you\'ll be sinking your teeth into a nice big data pie.
  • Collaborative research with academia. Did I mention we\'re founded by scientists? We have research ongoing with universities in London and aim to publish our results. You will be leading projects and authoring papers.
  • Developing our core algorithms. We\'re creating something novel, and your expertise will help drive this. From feature extraction to model selection and hyper-parameter tuning, you will be finding emotion in the noise.
  • General innovation. We care deeply about intellectual culture in our company. We all have the same goals, and we all get a say in how best to achieve these. Get creative!
Qualifications
  • You should apply if you want to grow with a start-up AI company
  • You should apply if you can move fast and get stuff done
  • You should apply if you build bespoke time series models and find meaning in noisy data
  • You should apply if you want to see your work being used out in the real world
  • You should apply if you want to make a name for yourself at the leading edge of AI

Job Description

Overview

We are on a mission to improve childcare in London, making it easier and more affordable for families to access flexible and high quality childcare. We are backed by fantastic investors, including top VCs who’ve backed companies like Wonderbly, Thread and Appear. We won ‘Best Technology’ at the Business Women Awards 2017, and are currently shortlisted for several awards including Startups ‘Tech Business of the Year’.

About the Role

We’re building a marketplace that enables families to find and share high quality nannies. As an engineer on our team, you’ll be designing and building tech to make complex matching problems a breeze, to give families and nannies a solution that just works, and to supercharge our nanny recruitment and training processes.

Tech and Tooling
  • You’ll be working in Ruby for most of the backend, with Rails, PostgreSQL and Redis making up most our core product.
  • You’ll be using modern frontend tooling, with ES6 and Tachyons.
  • When it comes to shipping code, you’ll be sending pull requests and doing code reviews in GitHub, and checking that CircleCI is happy before anything goes live.
  • You’ll mostly be deploying to Heroku, with some heavy lifting on AWS.
  • That said, our priority is making sure we’re using the right tools for the job and we’re open to adding to or changing up our tech and tooling as appropriate.
About Our Product

We’re continuously improving our product, building key features that will move the needle in a big way. Instead of an endless product roadmap, we run short development cycles to test assumptions and make smart decisions quickly. We favour feature flags over staging environments and deploy to production as often as we need to; deployment cycles shouldn’t get in the way of delivering value. As an engineer on the team, you’ll work closely with product and operations to find and build creative solutions for business problems and make sure we’re delivering the most value to our customers.

About You
  • You maybe a Junior, Mid Level or Senior developer, who thrives in small, fast-moving engineering teams.
  • · Familiarity with web application development
  • · Familiarity with relational databases and SQL
  • · You take pride in writing readable, well-designed and well-tested software
  • · You’re keen to pair program when appropriate, and generally enjoy a culture of code review
  • · You’re humble, you lap up feedback, and you want to learn
  • · You roll with it. You understand that start-ups are unpredictable environments, and are comfortable with a degree of chaos
  • · You own it. You take responsibility for your work from start to finish
Not essential, but nice to have
  • Not essential, but nice to have: Experience with Ruby on Rails
  • Not essential, but nice to have: A degree in Computer Science or a related field

We work from an amazing private office space in central London. The office has a roof terrace, showers, bike storage, free snacks and drinks, and a programme of social events

Job Description

Our platform is the video platform built for live, social and mobile. The cloud-based platform removes the traditional complexities of professional video production and distribution.

Our platform works with the world’s largest broadcasters and rights holders including: Sky Sports, BT Sport, Eurosport, ITV, Turner, The Premier League, LaLiga, The FA, Buzzfeed, AELTC Wimbledon, GOAL.com and many more. Our platform integrates with the major social platforms - including Facebook, Instagram, Periscope, Twitter, and YouTube. We are also a preferred global partner for Facebook Live.

Amazon Web Services is our main hosting provider. Every product of the platform is architected and built for scalability and high availability for a global client base. Being a cloud-based platform allows engineers to remain agile and gives them the freedom to try new things without compromising on reliability and speed of development.

We believe in hiring smart graduate and junior engineers nurturing them into our culture is the key to our successful growth. To support this strategy, you\'ll pair with a mentor on your first day with us. Your mentor will answer your technical doubts daily and will coach you on your career progression by helping you define your own focus within our platform (video, data, front-end, architecture, streaming.) with regular performance evaluations.

We are dedicated to making sure you are happy and committed during your time with us. We achieve this by pushing the platform and the team to use the latest technologies and to give you a whole new set of responsibilities (you will be responsible from your products end to end. From design and architecture to releasing and supporting in production). This way you can feel you are engaged and challenged and more importantly, that you can make the difference.

This strategy has allowed the perfect environment to retain our talent and keep our best engineers over time. A good example of this success is some of our more senior engineers like the current Product Owner or the Lead Software Architect. They started on our platform as graduate engineers and are now key leaders within the organization.

Being social is a huge part of the our family. We like to have fun together and we provide a series of activities to help in this area.

If technology gets you going in the morning, then you are in the right place!

Media Source Extensions, Canvas, React, ES6, Webpack, styled-components, storybook. - these are a few of the state-of-the-art techs you will work with.

To make sure you keep growing your knowledge around tech, we provide you with professional development opportunities like Hackathons, Tech hours, and have a development budget and pair programming days to improve our automated testing culture.

Some of your responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):

  • Migrating old parts of the platform to use the latest and shiniest of our stack
  • Collaborating to our design system
  • Taking ownership of your work, if you build it, you will maintain it and keep on improving it
REQUIREMENTS
  • Experience with front-end framework or a view library (React, Angular, .)
  • Experience with testing (unit tests, UA tests, .)
  • Curiosity and passion for learning
The big plus
  • Experience of component libraries and style guides
  • Exposure to state management libraries
  • Understanding of video editing tools
The recruitment process

We aim to have a quick and dynamic hiring process. This process lasts around two weeks and it has the following stages:

  1. Phone call interview (around 30 minutes) to understand your interests and career expectations to ensure we are a good fit for each other.
  2. Technical test to be completed at home.
  3. Final face to face interview (around 2 hours) with our lead developers to go through your test and your technical knowledge.
BENEFITS
  • Bi-annual hackathons & tech hour on Wednesday
  • Regular performance reviews
  • Flexible working hours
  • Work from home options
  • Ride to work scheme
  • Free breakfast, Friday happy hour & monthly company lunch
  • 25 days holiday & additional unpaid holiday week
  • Sponsored monthly social events

We are an equal opportunity employer and value diversity in our company. We do not discriminate based on race, religion, colour, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, veteran status, or disability status.
