Scientific Editor – Chemical Science What you'll be doing
  • Assess manuscripts submitted to Chemical Science and make editorial recommendations.
  • Support Associate Editors throughout the peer review process to ensure a high‑quality author experience.
  • Monitor publishing workflows and help maintain efficient publication times.
  • Commission content and engage with leading researchers to attract high‑quality submissions.
  • Support themed collections, journal development activities and marketing initiatives.
  • Build relationships with authors, reviewers, Editorial Board members and the wider research community.
  • Use publication and market data to inform the journal’s development strategy.
  • Represent the RSC at conferences, meetings and other community engagement activities.

  • A good honours degree in a scientific discipline, ideally chemistry or a related subject.
  • Strong analytical, communication and organisational skills.

The Role

We are seeking a Lab Assistant to join their Deeside team. This is an entry level position and would be suitable for graduates.

Role Overview:

To perform management of samples for stability study testing, in support of product shelf life and product labelling, according to pre-determined stability study protocols. To also be responsible for laboratory administration and sample preparation tasks through collaboration with Stability Scientists.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Perform maintenance, calibration, documentation and updating quality records for Stability equipment.
  • Maintain compliance to ISO13485 & ISO9001 standards in accordance with GLP/GMP compliant procedures.
  • Ensure the Stability labs are maintained as a safe working environment, raising near misses where needed.
  • Transport and organise stability samples across multiple storage conditions over two local sites.
  • Perform planned and ad-hoc stability sample set-downs, pull requests and support laboratory tasks as and when required.
  • Collation of stability data, including physical data retrieval, for stability/technical reports.
  • Take ownership of the storage and retrieval of stability samples.
  • Liaise with external vendors via telephone and when on site and arrange maintenance, service, and calibration contracts.
  • Perform sample retrieval for new and existing studies.
  • Identify improvements to current stability processes.
  • Support with laboratory setup, preparation and/or sample management for any test method development/validation.
  • Responsible for the ordering of laboratory consumables, chemicals, reagents and equipment when required.
Requirements
  • A-Levels or equivalent in scientific disciplines (e.g., Chemistry, Biology, Maths).
  • A full UK driver's license to allow use of Company Fleet Vehicle for transport of stability samples between facilities is required.
  • Ability to react and respond positively to changes in priority and workload.
  • Competent in following and adhering to pre-determined stability study protocols, SOPs, OCIs and TDs.
  • Basic experience in the utilisation of computerised systems to manage data and information.
  • Disciplined in adhering to group objectives including taking an active role in team collaborative activities.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Office - specifically Word and Excel.
  • Proactive and positive mindset with an attitude that is open to change to embrace new ways of working and improvements.
  • Competent in the disposal of chemicals, reagents and solvents in accordance to site and environmental procedures.

The Company

Our client is a specialist contract research organisation (CRO) supporting the development of advanced cell biology and imaging solutions. Working across a range of innovative research projects, they provide high-quality laboratory services using cutting-edge cell culture models and microscopy techniques.

Your main duties will be
  • Perform CL1 and CL2 mammalian tissue culture to support ongoing research projects.
  • Prepare and maintain cell cultures using sterile laboratory techniques.
  • Support sample preparation, including fixation, staining and transfection for imaging applications.
  • Maintain accurate laboratory records, SOPs and electronic lab notebooks.
  • Work closely with imaging specialists, analysts and project leads to deliver project objectives.
  • Ensure compliance with laboratory safety procedures and quality standards.
  • Assist with organoid, organ-on-chip and other advanced 3D cell culture models where applicable.
  • Develop microscopy skills through training and support continuous improvement initiatives.
Your Background
  • Degree in Biosciences or a related scientific discipline.

The position will initially be offered on a phased basis, starting with two half-days per week, increasing progressively each month before transitioning to full-time from February onwards. There may be opportunities to increase hours sooner depending on project demands.

EHS

      • Support COSHH system SDS database and support as required with on-going REACH registration dossier requirements
      • Support accident and incident investigations and root cause analysis on sit
      • Support in the analysis of EHS data, reporting, and statistics
      • Builds and maintains a network of internal and external EHS professionals and ensures transfer of EHS knowledge, requirements and best practices within site/Business.
      • Actively promotes EHS awareness on site, which will lead to improved EHS culture.
      • Carries out any other duties which are within the employee's skills and abilities whenever reasonably instructed.
      • Development and administrative management of the site's Action Tracking System
      • Co-ordinate the site's internal and external audit programme and manage the SharePoint audit management and action tracking system
Qualifications/ knowledge/ experience
  • EHS Qualification - NEBOSH certificate (or equivalent)
  • Basic/vocational education with some relevant EHS workplace experience
  • Previous experience working in high hazard or chemical manufacturing industry
  • Knowledge of EHS legislation including occupational health & safety, environmental monitoring, permitting and waste management
  • Auditing experience
  • Knowledge and experience of working with integrated management systems and ISO 9001, 14001 & 45001.
  • Further qualifications/training in occupational health monitoring or assessment e.g. Noise, Dust, HAVs etc.
  • Qualified to a degree level (with a technical/Scientific/EHS focus)
  • Proven ability to enable safe operations through pragmatic risk-based assessment
  • Knowledge and experience of working with SharePoint management system
