Are you a compassionate and skilled nurse looking to make a significant impact in palliative care? Join us as a Clinical Nurse Specialist at Marie Curie covering the Lothians. As a level six practitioner in line with the Marie Curie Career Development Framework (AFC Band 6), you will be an integral member of our multidisciplinary team providing specialist palliative care nursing services to individuals living with a terminal illness, their loved ones, and health professionals within the community. Working autonomously, you will support the management of a shared team caseload of patients with complex needs, offering expert advice and support.

Responsibilities

Deliver person-centred leadership, clinical excellence, and effective multidisciplinary collaboration to ensure that Marie Curie meets its strategic goals and positively influences the care received by terminally ill individuals and their families. Adhering to relevant legal, ethical, capability, and clinical frameworks, as well as Marie Curie policies and procedures, you will be accountable for your actions within the scope of your role.

Qualifications
  • Experience working in Specialist Palliative Care: Proven experience in providing care to patients with complex needs and ensuring comfort and quality of life during terminal illness.
  • Relevant post‑registration qualification (minimum Level 6) and nursing degree.
  • Driver's licence and access to a car essential for travelling to various locations to provide care and support to patients and their families in their homes.
  • Registered Nurse on NMC register (Adult).
  • Ability to connect with patients and their families on an emotional level, providing support and understanding during difficult times.
Salary and Contract

Salary: Marie Curie Clinical Pay Scale Band 6 (aligned with AFC) £43,231 – £52,679 pro rata per annum.

Contract: Permanent Part‑Time 22.5 hours per week (08:30 – 16:30) with weekend rota on 1 out of 8.

Base: Marie Curie St John’s Hospital, Livingston, West Lothian.

What you'll be doing:

  • Accurately translating complex clinical information from patient records into ICD-10 and OPCS-4 codes, in line with National Clinical Coding Standards
  • Extracting and analysing detailed clinical information from case notes, exercising sound judgement where documentation is unclear or requires clarification
  • Ensuring coded data is submitted accurately and within required deadlines
  • Supporting accurate HRG allocation to inform the Trust's income through the NHS Payment Scheme
  • Liaising professionally with clinicians and colleagues to resolve coding queries
  • Managing your own caseload independently, prioritising effectively to meet deadlines
  • Maintaining ACC accreditation through ongoing professional development
  • Handling patient information in line with data protection and confidentiality standards

What we're looking for:

  • ACC accredited (National Clinical Coding Qualification) - essential
  • Proven experience as a Clinical Coder within an NHS Trust setting
  • Strong working knowledge of ICD-10 and OPCS-4 classifications and coding standards
  • Good understanding of medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology
  • Excellent attention to detail and analytical skills
  • Confident using hospital patient administration systems (PAS) and Microsoft Office
  • Ability to work independently, manage a busy caseload, and meet deadlines
  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal
