Minimum Requirements

Minimum Eligibility Overview: Below are the minimum requirements as outlined by Massachusetts state law for police officer candidates, as well as the minimum requirements unique to the Braintree Police Department.


State‑Mandated Requirements (Per Massachusetts Law)

These are the minimum qualifications required by state law to serve as a police officer in Massachusetts. All applicants must meet these baseline standards to be considered eligible.



  • Be a U.S. Citizen (Birth or naturalization).

  • Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of hire.

  • Possess a valid Massachusetts Driver's License.

  • Ability to successfully complete the Physical Abilities Test (PAT's), and a medical and psychological fitness for duty examination.

  • Ability to successfully complete the Full‑Time MPTC Police Academy.

  • Have the ability to obtain an unrestricted Massachusetts Class A License to Carry a Firearm (LTC-A).

  • Not be a convicted felon or have convictions from another jurisdiction that would be treated as a felony in the Commonwealth.

  • Not smoke and stay a non‑smoker. Smoking of tobacco products is prohibited as outlined by G.L. c. 41 Section 101A of the Massachusetts General Laws.

  • Must pass a thorough Background Investigation.

  • Ability to successfully complete the Massachusetts Police Training Committee (MPTC) Full‑Time Police Academy.


Braintree PD Department‑Specific Requirements

  • Possess a high school diploma or G.E.D. Certificate.

  • Must have achieved 70%+ on the getbadged Entry Exam.

  • Must reside within 15 miles of Braintree, MA within one year of appointment.

  • Preference may be given to candidates who meet certain additional qualifications (such as prior law enforcement or relevant experience and specialized training). However, all qualified applicants are encouraged to apply and will be given full consideration.

A Rewarding Paycheck

Salary: $64,761 - $76,760 (depending upon years of service).



  • As an example, a Patrol Officer at the highest step, a Master's degree (Quinn equivalent) working the night shift, currently makes $113,949. Top‑step pay is reached in 42 months.

  • Braintree Police Officers also receive an additional 3% for accreditation and 3% for POST Certification in addition to their base pay by contract.

  • The Patrol Officers and Supervisors' union contracts have expired, and both unions are currently in negotiations with the Town of Braintree.
