Overview

As a Product Assurance Engineer at Spire, you will play a key role in ensuring the quality, reliability, and safety of our space systems as we expand our fleet and take on new missions. This is an excellent opportunity for someone with experience in aerospace, space, or other high‑reliability environments who is looking to deepen their expertise and contribute directly to mission success. You will work closely with senior PA staff, engineering teams, and project managers to support the full lifecycle of Product Assurance activities.

Responsibilities
  • You will support the implementation of Product Assurance processes across assigned projects or subsystems, including:
  • Contributing to the definition and flow‑down of PA requirements based on customer and project specifications
  • Supporting compliance verification activities and helping document/justify deviations where required
  • Assisting in the development and maintenance of Project PA Plans and ensuring they are followed throughout the project lifecycle
  • Participating in reviews, audits, and technical meetings, providing PA input as needed
  • Supporting the management of non‑conformities internally and with suppliers, ensuring proper documentation and visibility
  • Helping prepare, review, and maintain project Quality documentation
  • Supporting reliability, dependability, and safety analysis activities under guidance from senior PA staff

We're looking for an experienced Quality professional to play a key role in assuring the successful introduction of new products into series production manufacturing. This is a high-impact position where you will provide independent assurance, strategic quality leadership, and risk mitigation across NPI programmes.

Working within a technically advanced environment-from electronic assemblies through to fully integrated systems-you will influence how products are built, ensuring that processes are robust, scalable, and right first time.

  • Provide independent quality assurance and governance across NPI manufacturing programmes

  • Degree qualified (or equivalent experience) in Engineering, Manufacturing, Quality, Physics or a related discipline
  • Experience within Product Assurance, Quality Assurance, Manufacturing Quality or Reliability Engineering
  • Experience working with complex electronic, RF, aerospace, defence or space products
  • Strong understanding of quality management systems, non‑conformance management and root cause analysis
  • Knowledge of space‑grade electronic components, PCB manufacturing and aerospace soldering standards

The Role

The SKAO Product Assurance team is responsible for the definition and implementation of the quality assurance and control activities for the SKA Project.

Reporting to the Product Assurance Manager, the Product Assurance Engineer delivers hands‑on implementation of SKA quality assurance requirements for certain contracts within the SKA project and provides clear, regular updates to the project team. The role involves close engagement with contractors to confirm the adequacy of their processes and resources to execute the contracts, and to rigorously review outputs at each contract stage for compliance with requirements, standards and regulations. Working closely with Subject Matter Experts as required, the role is central to ensuring product quality and successful integration into the SKA Telescope system.

The Product Assurance required for SKAO will involve several challenges which are unique to research infrastructures. The successful candidate will rise to these challenges and overcome them to help deliver a world leading science facility. This will require good problem‑solving skills, flexibility and adaptability to the ways of working in a research environment in order to come up with innovative theoretical ideas to problems and translating them to practical solutions for implementation.

The Product Assurance Engineer will be based at the SKAO headquarters in the UK but will also work in the field at contractors sites, the SKAO test facilities and the Telescope construction sites. Therefore, regular international travel to these sites will be required. Some duties may require occasional extended stays of up to 4 weeks in host countries, subject to visa requirements.

The role is a two year fixed‑term andwill be based in the SKAO Global Headquarters located at Jodrell Bank in the UK.

The Engineering Product Assurance Department

Engineering Product Assurance Department (EPAD). The role is one of six senior consultants with a various specialist skillsets supported by an Engineering manager and a team of six Principal Engineers (of a solid submarine industry and ex submariner backgrounds). Sitting outside of the programmes engineering management, EPAD provides an independent risk-based assessment on the effectiveness of governance, engineering management, and internal controls across Level 1 & 2 assurance activities. The Level 3 output also provides an independent view to the Engineering Authority (EA) and senior programme stakeholders on product/design maturity and identifies areas where intervention or improvement may be required. When appropriate the Level 3 activity should also draw upon pan-functional mutual assurance in accordance with Independent Internal Assurance.
