Ready for your next challenge in Private Sector Housing? A Council in Essex are looking for an experienced housing professional to join their Environmental Health team and help deliver a vital frontline service, supporting residents and improving housing standards across the community.
As the Interim Private Sector Housing Officer, you'll play a key role in ensuring residents have access to safe, healthy and well-managed homes. Working as part of a supportive Environmental Health team, you'll help deliver a responsive housing service at a time of increased demand following the introduction of the Renters' Rights Act.
Key Responsibilities:
* Investigating housing complaints and carrying out inspections under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System (HHSRS).
* Taking appropriate enforcement action to improve housing standards, including informal and formal interventions where necessary.
* Responding to requests for assistance from tenants, landlords and other stakeholders.
* Supporting the delivery of the Council's statutory housing functions, ensuring legislation and professional standards are met.
* Working collaboratively with internal teams and external partners to protect residents and improve housing conditions across the district.
About you:
The ideal candidate will bring:
* Previous experience working within local authority housing services.
* A sound understanding of housing legislation, including HHSRS, enforcement powers and the Renters' Rights Act.
* Excellent communication and case management skills, with the confidence to deal with a wide range of stakeholders.
* The ability to manage a varied caseload, prioritise competing demands and make well-reasoned decisions.

Are you an experienced Private Sector Housing Officer looking for your next interim contract within Local Government?
A Hampshire Local Authority is seeking an experienced Private Sector Housing Officer to join its busy and supportive Private Sector Housing team on an initial 6-month contract.
The Role
As a Private Sector Housing Officer , you'll manage a varied caseload across the Private Rented Sector, focusing on improving housing standards, ensuring compliance with legislation, and delivering effective private sector housing functions.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Carrying out HHSRS inspections and property investigations.
- Assessing Category 1 and Category 2 hazards under the Housing Health and Safety Rating System.
- Serving statutory notices under the Housing Act 2004.
- Preparing and issuing Civil Penalty Notices (CPNs).
- Investigating housing complaints, disrepair cases and poor housing conditions.
- Liaising with landlords, tenants, legal teams and external agencies.
- Preparing detailed inspection reports and evidence packs.
- Supporting wider Private Sector Housing initiatives.
About You
To be considered for this Private Sector Housing Officer role, you will have:
- Recent experience working within a Local Authority Private Sector Housing team.
- Strong knowledge of the Housing Act 2004 and HHSRS.
- Experience preparing and issuing Civil Penalty Notices.
- The ability to independently manage a busy and varied caseload.
- Excellent communication, negotiation and report-writing skills.
- Availability to start at short notice would be advantageous.
Contract Details
- 55-60 per hour (Umbrella)
- Initial 6-month contract , with the potential for extension.
- Hybrid working arrangements.
- Immediate start available.
