The role – Senior Bioinformatician for Ellele Health

You’ll lead end-to-end analysis across methylation, mutation, and microbiome data to discover biomarkers and insights in human genomics, cancer, wellness, and disease. You’ll design production-grade Nextflow pipelines, integrate lab/clinical metadata, and partner closely with wet-lab, clinical, and product teams to translate findings into validated, decision-ready outputs.

Key responsibilities

· Pipeline engineering (Nextflow): Design, build, and maintain robust, containerised pipelines for methylome, variant, and microbiome analyses; implement CI/CD, provenance, and reproducibility at scale (Docker/Singularity, Git, cloud/HPC).

· Methylation analytics: Process bisulfite/enzymatic sequencing; perform QC, normalization, batch correction, DMR calling, and pathway/region enrichment; evaluate clinical associations and predictive performance.

· Variant analysis: Implement best-practice alignment and (somatic/germline) calling; filtering/annotation; mutational signatures; copy-number; build cohort-level models.

· Microbiome & metagenomics: Run shotgun workflows for taxonomic/functional profiling; contamination control; host–microbe integration; link microbial features with host genetics and clinical phenotypes.

· Multi-omics integration: Develop reproducible feature engineering and ML/biostatistics frameworks (cross-validation, calibration, confounding control) to derive clinically meaningful signatures.

· Data management & governance: Define schemas and metadata standards; ensure traceability from instrument output to results; partner with Lab/Clinical Ops on LIMS/EDC integrations and data quality.

· Collaboration & communication: Translate complex analyses into clear narratives, dashboards, and reports for scientists, clinicians, and leadership; contribute to study design and sample size/power discussions.

· Quality & documentation: Establish testing, monitoring, and QC gates; write methods/SOPs; support publications and regulatory-grade documentation where needed.

· Mentorship: Provide technical guidance and code review; help shape best practices across the informatics stack.

Requirements

PhD (or equivalent experience) in a computational field (Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Computer Science, Statistics, Engineering, or related).

· 3+ years working with NGS data, including at least two of: methylation, variant, microbiome; experience combining them is a plus.

· Advanced proficiency in Python and/or R, linux, Git, Nextflow, and containerisation (Docker/Singularity); strong data-modelling skills.

· Solid grounding in statistics/ML (regression, regularisation, cross-validation, survival/time-to-event, feature selection).

· Experience operating pipelines on cloud or HPC (job schedulers, object storage, workflow orchestration, observability).

· Track record of collaborative work with laboratory/clinical teams and of delivering clear, reproducible analyses.

· Must be able to work onsite in Cambridge, UK 3 days per week.

Nice to have

· Experience in women’s health, gynaecological cancers, or biomarker work; familiarity with clinical study data flows (LIMS/EDC).

· Knowledge of data privacy/ethics for human genomics and clinical data (e.g., UK GDPR), and writing methods/SOPs for regulated contexts.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a Bioinformatician  to join the GBI team in a client-facing role, supporting researchers through interactive data analysis, workflow development, and strategic engagement. This position plays a key role in refining and running bioinformatics pipelines, promoting reproducible research, and enabling staff to access and benefit from the expertise of the world class Bioinformatics group.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To provide data analysis and interpretation for GBI researchers , assisting, where required, in manuscript preparation and submission.
  • To participate in developing and implementing bioinformatics strategies, programs, and workflows  that support the experimental programmes of GBI, including synthetic biology, genome design, and molecular evolution.
  • To ensure reproducibility, version control, and documentation  for all analyses and pipelines, contributing to open science and collaborative research.
  • To organise and prioritise work , operating at the highest standard to defined deadlines.
  • To ensure compliance with best practices in biological data handling , ensuring effective integration of biological data with laboratory and experimental metadata.
  • To assist in the design and delivery of high-quality training to GBI staff and researchers .
  • To support strategies for effective and timely user engagement , including user-group meetings, seminars, and chat systems.
  • To use strategic learning opportunities to develop and broaden experitise ; personally, and as part of efforts to ensure resilience within the group.

Requirements

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • An advanced degree in a data-oriented subject (e.g. Bioinformatics, Medical Informatics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry).
  • Experience delivering bioinformatics analyses in a client-facing capacity , with strong knowledge of common analyses in genomics (e.g. bulk and single-cell RNAseq, WGS/WES, CUT-and-TAG).
  • An appreciation, or experience, of working within a laboratory or scientific research setting ; an understanding of the data types, limitations, and challenges across experimental workflows, and of relevant technicques in molecular biology upstream of data generation.
  • Demonstrable programming skills (R and/or Python).
  • Familiarity operating UNIX systems , including operating in HPC and/or Cloud environments (e.g. SLURM, OCI).
  • Experience running and fault-finding analysis pipelines (e.g. Nextflow, Snakemake), especially utilising software containers (e.g. Docker, Singularity/Apptainer).
  • Experience using and developing version-controlled codebases , familiarity with common tools (git) and development practises.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and stakeholder engagement skills , with the ability to translate technical solutions into strategic value for the organisation.

The role combines technical leadership with scientific insight, contributing directly to the success of GBI’s research programmes in synthetic biology, genome design, and molecular evolution.

Key Responsibilities:

  • To provide expert-level data analysis and interpretation for GBI researchers , assisting from conceptualisation through to manuscript preparation and submission.
  • To lead and contribute to collaborative analysis projects involving GBI researchers and staff, and external collaborators.
  • To develop and implement bioinformatics strategies, programs, and workflows  that support the experimental programmes of GBI, including synthetic biology, genome design, and molecular evolution.
  • To work closely with researchers and platform staff  (e.g. sequencing, mass spectrometry, flow cytometry) to develop and refine computational pipelines for analysing biological data.
  • To ensure reproducibility, version control, and documentation  for all analyses and pipelines, contributing to open science and collaborative research.
  • To organise and prioritise work , operating at the highest standard to defined deadlines.
  • To ensure compliance with best practices in biological data handling , ensuring effective integration of biological data with laboratory and experimental metadata.
  • To design and deliver high-quality training to GBI staff and researchers and to assist and mentor those working independently.
  • To support strategies for effective and timely user engagement , including user-group meetings, seminars, and chat systems.
  • To use strategic learning opportunities to maintain and further develop experitise ; personally, and as part of efforts to ensure resilience within the group.
  • To promote and champion EIT and the work of the GBI , representing the institute at functions and public events.

Requirements

Essential Knowledge, Skills, and Experience:

  • An advanced degree in a data-oriented subject (e.g. Bioinformatics, Medical Informatics, Molecular Biology, Biochemistry).
  • Extensive experience delivering bioinformatics analyses in a client-facing capacity , with a proven record evidenced by publications or similar across a range of areas (e.g. RNA- and DNA-based bulk / single cell / spatial, long-read sequencing, DNA conformation and accessibility, image analysis, proteomics, metabolomics, protein structure, high-dimension cytometry).
  • Practical experience, or a thorough understanding, of working within a laboratory or scientific research setting ; a strong knowledge of the data types, limitations, and challenges across experimental workflows, and of relevant technicques in molecular biology upstream of data generation.
  • Expert-level programming skills (R and Python).
  • Extensive experience operating in HPC and/or Cloud environments (e.g. SLURM, OCI), strong familiarity with UNIX.
  • Experience designing and implementing analysis pipelines (e.g. Nextflow, Snakemake), especially utilising software containers (e.g. Docker, Singularity/Apptainer).
  • Demonstrable experience developing version-controlled code , familiarity with common tools (git) and of multi-user development practises.
  • Strong verbal and written communication and stakeholder engagement skills , with the ability to translate technical solutions into strategic value for the organisation

  • You must have the right to work permanently in the UK with a willingness to travel as necessary.
  • You will live in, or within easy commuting distance of, Oxford.
