What you’ll be doing:
- Reviewing/assessing the developing SSN-AUKUS Submarine design to ensure it is safe, operable, and habitable by its crew. This will be achieved through attendance at design reviews, review of the 3D CAD model, review of design documentation, participation in experimental design and user trials, and provision of design guidance and sharing of SQEP knowledge
- Providing specialist support to safety activities e.g., HAZID, HAZOPS, ALARP Optioneering workshops
- Offering specialist support to Operating Documentation Production Authority in support of OPDOC derivation and verification
Your skills and experiences:
- Experienced in the following discipline (Astute preferred): CAT B/C Ships Platform Systems operator/maintainer – Relevant Qualifications to skills required
- Experience and knowledge across any of the following disciplines: Platform systems, Electrical Generation & Distribution and/or Whole Boat Activities
- A general understanding of the manufacturing, assembly, commissioning and testing processes used within the business
- Basic understanding of the challenges posed by the environment that the product will be exposed to

This is a senior mechanical engineering role focused on leading the design and development of complex mechanical systems for a cutting-edge technology demonstrator. The successful candidate will act as the mechanical design authority, ensuring robust, compliant solutions throughout the full engineering lifecycle. With strong expertise in structural design, thermal systems, or other key mechanical domains, they will guide both project-specific activities and support the broader engineering community with technical leadership and cross-functional collaboration.
What you’ll be doing:

Carry out detailed mechanical design and analysis activities to support the development of a complex new product

Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure mechanical solutions align with overall system requirements

Act as the Mechanical Design Authority, providing expert-level input across the full product lifecycle

Apply subject matter expertise in key mechanical areas such as thermal management, structural integrity, or material selection

Ensure design compliance with relevant industry standards, regulations, and internal processes

Support design reviews, technical assessments, and the implementation of design changes as needed
Your skills and experiences:

Demonstrable subject matter expertise in at least one area of Mechanical Engineering (e.g. thermal systems, structures, CFD, FEA, or propulsion), with the ability to provide authoritative technical input

Proven experience in complex mechanical design, including the design, build, integration, and testing of advanced mechanical systems or products

Ability to collate, interpret and translate requirements into effective mechanical design solutions throughout the engineering lifecycle

Familiarity with modelling and simulation tools used for mechanical analysis, such as those assessing structural behaviour under static and dynamic loads

Comfortable working within engineering governance frameworks, ensuring compliance with relevant standards, processes, and best practices

Ideally holds Chartered Engineer status or has equivalent experience and qualifications in a mechanical engineering discipline

What you’ll be doing:

Provide a depth and breadth of expert knowledge gained through substantial work experience to apply principles and concepts of systems engineering, ISO 15288 and own specialist mechanical engineering expertise to development or problem resolution of a complex shipborne structure with integrated sensor configurations

Provide technical and business leadership and may lead several engineering teams, including management and possible control of costs associated with the team activity

Analyse, define, evaluate, plan and deliver solutions to meet programme, business and customer requirements

Interface with customers, suppliers and other functions and will act as an ambassador for engineering to these groups

Your skills and experiences:

Subject matter expertise in Mechanical Engineering: Structures and Finite Element Analysis (particularly Static and Dynamic Shock and Vibration) or equivalent experience

Relevant experience/knowledge of CAD and Mechanical Engineering Analysis, Modelling and Simulation tools

Experience of leading large scale complex system designs
