Reporting to the Senior Engineer Manager, the Mechanical Design Engineer is responsible for providing functional and robust Electro-mechanical/Mechanical designs from marketing specifications and provide technical solutions to engineering problems within the development of industrial printers. This exciting work involves designing Prototypes, 3D models, assessing performance and improving the design to meet the customers' requirements.
This is an onsite position and will be located in Nottingham, UK.
In this role, a typical day will look like:
+ Being involved in brainstorming, initial concept generation, rapid prototyping and testing to identify issues, problem solving and design improvement.
+ System-level design of complex mechanical/electro-mechanical components.
+ Participation in Design reviews and DFMEA analysis of design concepts/prototypes to identify potential failure modes and improve the current design.
+ Use Solid Works CAD to produce manufacturing documentation (drawings, specs etc).
+ Developing Test Plans to validate design solutions.
+ Participation, and where necessary be responsible for, technical reviews, feasibility studies and project reviews as appropriate, and to provide/direct technical support for other departments, if required.

We are seeking a highly motivated Materials Engineer to support the development and optimization of advanced materials used in hydrogen fuel cell systems, electric propulsion components, and aircraft structural elements. Choosing, qualifying, and managing the materials (metals, composites, and polymers) used in our aerospace products—ensuring they meet performance, cost, manufacturing, reliability, environmental, and certification standards. Provide approved material limits, process guidelines, and material histories that can withstand review by customers, regulatory authorities, and others.
Key Responsibilties
- Material selection & allowables: generate/release material and process specifications/qualification; define A/B-basis allowables for metals and S-basis for composites where applicable. Create design data sheets with mechanical, thermal, electrical, flammability, fatigue/fracture, corrosion, and environmental properties (dry/wet/hot/cold, DO-160G conditions).
- Certification & compliance: build substantiation packages traceable to SAE/AMS/ASTM, MMPDS, CMH-17, and internal test reports. Define qualification plans (coupon → element → subcomponent → component) aligned to AC/CS guidance and customer spec.
- Manufacturing & DFx partnership : approve processes: forging, casting, heat treatment, machining, forming, bonding, curing, welding/brazing, AM/HIP. Design/approve process control documents (PCDs), traveler checkpoints, and acceptance criteria; design FAI and control plans.
- Reliability, durability, and safety: own fatigue/fracture control plans; corrosion prevention & control; damage tolerance for metals and composites (including CAI and barely visible impact damage). Define inspection intervals and NDI/NDT methods (UT, RT, PT, MT, EC; POD/false call management).
- Supplier & pedigree management: qualify mills, pre-preggers, heat treaters, platers, bond shops, AM bureaus; verify AS9100/NADCAP. Create receiving inspection standards, lot acceptance testing (LAT), and CoC/traceability requirements.
- Test strategy & data management: plan and oversee coupon/element testing; manage labs; ensure statistical treatment (A-/B-basis, confidence levels). Maintain a single source of truth for material data and revision control; drive digital threads to CAD/FEA/PLM/ERP.
- Problem solving: lead MRB for material-related NCs; run root cause (5-Why/Fishbone/DoE); implement CAPAs.
- Cross-functional enablement: train design, stress, and manufacturing teams on proper material use, environmental limits, and handling/processing.
Requirements
- MS/BS in Materials Science/Metallurgy/Polymer/Composites with proper aerospace experience (7+ years)
- 7+ years in aerospace materials engineering (OEM or Tier-1), covering both metals and composites.
- Demonstrated ownership of A/B-basis allowables, CMH-17 methods, and qualification test programs.
- Hands-on with heat treatment, bonding, autoclave/RTM, welding/brazing, AM post-processing, and surface finishing.
- Experience with NDI/NDT planning and NAS-410/NADCAP audits.
- Strong statistics (DOE, regression, distribution fitting, tolerance analysis).
- Hydrogen systems or high-voltage propulsion exposure (compatibility, insulation, EMI/ESD).

**Basic Requirements**
+ Education: A Degree in Mechanical Engineering (Hons 2:1 or better preferred) or equivalent work experience.
+ Experience: Minimum of 2 - 4 years of experience in Mechanical Engineering.
+ Team Player: Ability to work effectively in a team environment and collaborate with cross-functions teams internally and externally. This role collaborates with multiple stakeholders to ensure clear expectations throughout project development and standards of excellence are achieved.

+ Exposure to electronic design would be highly beneficial.

**Position Purpose**
The MDE Level III is a competent and experienced design engineer, able to execute all design phases of a project (or multiple projects simultaneously). They may assume overall project responsibility or responsibility for particular project elements, and will monitor progress and report back to a senior engineer regards technical, schedule and budgetary constraints. The MDE Level III must maintain knowledge of the cutting edge of technology in relevant subject areas.Whilst the role does not involve any direct line management, there will be duties in delegation of work, planning, supporting and mentoring staff as required. An effective MDE Level III will demonstrate and develop their leadership skills to build high performance teams and maintain a positive approach to all challenges.

+ Support the design process by consideration of client contractual/IP requirements & standards (what level of technical documentation is required?), assessment and buy in/feedback against schedule and timely alerting of any deviations to aid in department resourcing. Assist in breaking down the work into specific elements or work-packages, assign (or keep) responsibility. Take the design from concept through to detailed design, design reviews and release of production drawings and BOMS, and review this work when done by others.
+ Conduct the relevant calculations typically with hand calcs, Excel spreadsheets, FEA and specialist software, and review this work when done by others.
+ Support project management with client meetings, site surveys where required, technical or commercial queries and client design team comments & requests - challenging it as appropriate. Consideration of shipping & installation strategy to best guide the design. Processing any received-from-client materials and drawings, then handling updates from site red-lines, inspection - potentially including planning and supporting Site Acceptance Testing - preparation of complete project pack, formal compliance documents + O&M, labelling and signage, and final client sign-off.
+ Support production department with respective handover meetings from design, technical or commercial queries, update from red-lines, inspection - potentially including planning and supporting internal and external Factory Acceptance Testing and inspection visits - and sign-off.
+ Support legacy equipment (potentially designed by others - internal or external), via the support department or through other routes.
+ Sometimes prepares work packages for the project team, supervises and supports as necessary, checks and collates work package back in for submittal.
+ Supervises all staff necessary to complete assignments (where applicable).
+ Reviews and approves scopes, budgets, and schedules for assignment with supervision from others.
+ Plans, schedules, or coordinates the preparation of documents or activities for their elements or projects.
