This once in a lifetime major infrastructure programme is replacing the current facilities with modern state of the art manufacturing capability. You will be working across multiple projects and lifecycle stages in order to ensure that the areas under your responsibility meet both our engineering and project requirements. You will be able to interact with various stakeholders both internal and external to the business in order to be successful. You will be supported by a community of around 3,000 engineers in the Submarines business with training and development to allow you to build your skills and thrive in-role. The role will be based in Derby but with opportunities for hybrid working. Although experience of working with nuclear facilities is certainly advantageous, we invite applications from those that are interested in redeploying their existing capabilities in a new area. What is most important is having the right approach; you need to be someone who can work with and influence engineers from other disciplines so that chemical engineering is an integral part of the overall engineering solution. What you will be doing Act as 'Intelligent Customer' for chemical engineering aspects of design and construction. These aspects include process design; P&IDs; mass & energy balances; hazard studies; sizing, pressure and flow calculations. Ensure that principles of inherent safety, hierarchy of controls and simplification are embedded into the design. Lead the development of requirements and design options for chemical engineering packages. Provide assurance that requirements have been appropriately incorporated into design and construction. Ensure that chemical engineering within the project is carried out in accordance with required engineering and project processes. Review and acceptance of chemical engineering documentation and drawings produced by the external supply chain. Provide input to the production of engineering processes, plans and strategies. Production of applicable aspects of safety and environmental documentation. Implement engineering controls on chemical process engineering work carried out internally and in the external supply chain. Ensuring that chemical process systems are adequately commissioned and decommissioned. To support the Engineering Manager in ensuring that Suitably Qualified and Experienced Persons (SQEP) both internally and in the external supply chain are performing chemical engineering work. Provide technical authority, mentorship and review input for junior engineers and cross-functional design teams. An experienced Laboratory Technician eith experience of chemiocal injection systems, sampling and analysis is needed for a 4 week contract in Southampton

As a Chemical Laboratory & Sampling Engineer you will provide a vital service by implementing, monitoring, and evaluating chemical delivery systems. Taking ownership of teams/sites, you will ensure the client have the service needed to operate in a safe and compliant manner while supporting our customer's needs.

You will be responsible for:

  • Implementing, monitoring, and assessing chemical injection systems to ensure system reliability and performance
  • Sampling of crude oil and process waters regularly with the intended purpose of optimising the system performance through analysis, interpretation, corrective action ownership and customer recommendations.
  • Maintaining chemical and inventory monitoring to ensure correct rates of operation
  • Troubleshooting and correcting customer systems to resolve production related challenges and to ensure optimization of contract KPIs
  • Overseeing product dosage rates and application changes for customer specifications to meet defined objectives
  • Providing technical guidance for mobilization and demobilization of chemical injection system to ensure safety and performance
  • This is working in a crude oil refinery environment around crude receiving and processing units (tank farms, desalters, distillation units and overhead condensing systems).

To be successful in this role you will:

  • Have a technical diploma, Degree or equivalent related work experience
  • Show good, general technical knowledge of chemical injection systems and chemical sampling
  • Have good laboratory practice experience in an analytical or industrial environment
  • Be a self-starter, proactively taking the initiative to identify and solve problems
  • Demonstrate a customer-focused mindset and have a structured efficient approach to responding to customer needs
  • Have excellent all-round communication skills
  • Show a good understanding of IT such as MS Office (Excel, PowerPoint, Word, Outlook)

This is a temporary position with a duration of 4 weeks. Pay rate is 30 p/h PAYE working a 40 hour week Monday to Friday to start as soon as possible

Description

As the Process Safety Engineer you will be tasked with the following;

  • Develop and implement process safety management systems in line with regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct risk assessments and hazard analyses to identify and mitigate potential safety issues.
  • Collaborate with engineering teams to ensure safety is integrated into process designs.
  • Prepare and maintain safety documentation, including safety cases and risk registers.
  • Lead incident investigations and recommend corrective actions to prevent recurrence.
  • Provide training and guidance on process safety standards to colleagues and stakeholders.
  • Monitor compliance with safety regulations and industry standards.
  • Engage with external bodies to stay updated on best practices and regulatory changes.

Profile

A successful Process Safety Engineer should have:

  • A degree in chemical engineering, process engineering, or a related field.
  • Strong knowledge of process safety management principles and techniques.
  • Experience in the industrial/manufacturing sector, particularly in safety and compliance roles.
  • Familiarity with relevant legislation, such as COMAH and DSEAR regulations.
  • Proficiency in conducting risk assessments and hazard analyses.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Strong communication skills for liaising with internal and external stakeholders.

  • Strong knowledge of COMAH, DSEAR, risk assessment techniques.
  • Skilled in HAZOP, HAZID, SIL, LOPA.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to work independently and in teams.
  • Strong IT skills (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
  • Knowledge of Lean, Six Sigma, FMEA or similar improvement methods.

  • 60,000- 70,000 per annum subject to experience
  • 33 days - includes bank holiday entitlement
