How you'll make a difference

Working at HMP Leyhill, Tortworth, you will manage a well-stocked library and support literacy, learning and rehabilitation within the prison community.


What you will be doing

  • You will be responsible for the day-to-day management and operations of the library, leading a small team of part-time Prison Library Assistants and prison library orderlies. Together, you will organise, maintain, develop and promote the library service provided for prisoners.
  • We require you to coordinate the service development and promote library engagement initiatives, organising reading and literacy programmes tailored to the prison community and liaising with colleagues in the prison.
  • You will select and purchase library materials to meet the needs of prisoners and manage a small stock budget.
  • It will be key for you to monitor the use of the service by collection of statistics and regularly report to the Library Services Manager and prison colleagues.
  • Regularly, you will need to undertake the physical aspects of the job including shelving and counter work, lifting and carrying books and other materials and unpacking and packing crates from our deliveries.

What we need from you

  • We require you to hold or be working towards a relevant library and information qualification, such as MSc Library and Information Management or equivalent professional experience in a similar area.
  • You need to have experience working in a library environment, delivering a high-quality, customer-focused service.
  • You will be able to demonstrate an ability to manage staff, including supervision, training, recruitment and development of a team.
  • Given the elements of this role, you will be self-motivated, be able to use your initiative, manage and prioritise personal workload and priorities and have good organisational skills.  You must also have excellent IT and digital skills.
  • You will have good inter-personal skills including communication, influencing and negotiating to communicate with a wide range of people to solve issues and identify solutions.
  • Although not essential, you may have experience of working in a prison, public or education library.

What you need to know

  • Your salary is pro-rata to hours worked.
  • You will be working in a Category D open prison, and you will need to comply with security procedures and undertake appropriate training. HMPPS vetting and clearances will be required for this post. This will be organised by the prison.
  • Please note that due to the nature of this role, it is a requirement of employment that an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check is obtained.

  • To work with retrofit project managers to help maintain effective financial controls of our retrofit projects, and provide the Directors of HES and Development with up-to-date projections of spend and expenditure.
  • To take responsibility for the quality of outputs of the HES team’s retrofit work, including timely reporting to project partners and funders.
  • To oversee line management and professional development of all retrofit staff.
  • To work with the Director of HES to identify and create new opportunities for CSE to deliver our strategic objectives in relation to retrofit.
  • To provide strategic direction to all large retrofit projects and contribute to the delivery of specific projects as relevant, and to enable the provision of retrofit expertise to other projects across CSE.
  • To provide input to the organisation’s business plan with respect to retrofit opportunities and services for the year ahead, forecasting staffing needs and helping to establish the 3-year budget for the team.
  • To share with other Heads of Team collective responsibility for the day-to-day operation of the organisation, representing the HES team’s retrofit work as a member of the SMT.

  • Minimum Maths/English GCSE or equivalent.
  • Knowledge of a range of energy efficiency and low carbon technologies.
  • Knowledge of the policy framework and funding landscape for retrofit programmes
  • Extensive experience of delivering retrofit project services or programmes.
  • Experience of working with installers of energy efficiency measures and low carbon technologies.
  • Experience of developing new projects and services that offer energy efficiency measures and low carbon technologies to householders or businesses.
  • Line management experience.
  • Excellent reporting and analytical skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, experience of writing effective technical or non-technical summaries of complex issues.

Merlyn Phoenix Limited based in Cricklade Swindon is hiring for HGV Class 1 drivers for tramping work. We have rapid growth projections, providing long-term careers for drivers working on our permanent contract with the worlds largest online retailor.

Permanent contract base salary £2,000 to 4,000 inclusive of night out money based on 1 tramping tour per week < r>Contributory company pension

HGV Driver Requirements
Tramping prepared to be away in truck for the week.
Hold a valid commercial Driving License with the Correct Categories C / C+E
Have a Professional Driving Qualification called the Full Driver Certificate of Professional Competence (CPC)
Hold a Digital Tachograph / Smart Card
Pass a background check (below) to the extend it is permitted by the applicable law
Pass a standard drug and alcohol test (below) to the extend it is permitted by the applicable law
Be able to speak & read English satisfactorily
Have a maximum of 6 penalty points in the Driver’s License (as well as no DD, DR or IN endorsements) < r>Approved drivers consist of drivers with BGC results as “Meets Requirements” and drug and alcohol tests with negative results.
Use route navigation apps and knowledge of area to deliver packages to warehouse on time
Interact with clients’ colleagues and suppliers in a professional manner < r>Complete daily maintenance checks on delivery trucks and trailers. Notify managers of any issues
Report issues to vehicles and delays to schedule to relevant person in real time
Drive in inclement weather, such as light snow
Maintain electronic logs to track routes and deliveries
