What you will do

As a College Services Advisor, you’ll play a vital role covering all aspects of student support and success from welcoming to the College to registering at their chosen university. The team provides support across a range of areas, including student wellbeing and support, academic and quality assurance, student progression, compliance and administration.

We’re looking for someone with the passion and skill to support students at the University of Bristol as part of the Students’ Union Housing Advice Service. We hope that it might be you.

It’s a new service, established in January 2025, and you will be part of its continuing development.

We provide information, advice and support to students who are experiencing a variety of housing-related issues; usually when things aren’t quite going to plan. Our advice covers areas including finding accommodation, understanding tenants’ and landlords’ rights and responsibilities, managing affordability and debt, tenant conflicts, disrepair, poor housing conditions and other breaches of tenancy and licence agreements.

We support students to understand and navigate various processes, for example formal complaints, and develop new skills, often in partnership with others at the Students’ Union, The University of Bristol and beyond. We frequently signpost students to other services that can support their wellbeing and academic success too.

You don’t have to have worked in higher education or in a students’ union before, but we are looking for someone who is experienced in advice and advocacy work, ideally housing related. You’ll be comfortable working in a fast-paced environment and someone who enjoys connecting with other people. You have excellent communication and organisational skills. You can interpret and explain complex information in a clear and simple way and are able to produce written reports and presentations to a high standard. You’re able to hold and manage your own caseload effectively, keeping accurate records on our case management system, and able to effect change and achieve positive outcomes for the students who access our service.

WHAT YOU WILL DO

Supporting Educational Success

You’ll work one-on-one with active-duty service members, civilian employees, and eligible dependents to guide them through their educational goals — from basic skills to graduate-level programs.

You’ll advise on college options, credentialing programs like AFCOOL, and officer accession pathways, helping learners align their studies with personal and professional development.

Navigating Financial Aid and Military Benefits

You’ll assist with understanding and completing applications for Tuition Assistance, VA benefits, scholarships, and grants.

You’ll be the go-to resource for helping students leverage programs like the SkillBridge initiative, ensuring they’re aware of career-aligned opportunities.

Administering Exams Securely and Professionally

You’ll serve as the primary test proctor for a wide range of examinations including Pearson VUE, FAA, and Air Force-specific tests (DLPT, DLAB, CDCs, etc.).

You’ll ensure all exams are administered under strict compliance standards, maintain test logs, and respond immediately to any issues that could compromise test integrity.

Maintaining Accurate Records and Reports

You’ll also prepare and submit weekly reports, help track exam results, and support internal audits with accurate record keeping.

Serving as a Key Part of the Education Center Team

While much of your work is independent, you’ll coordinate with the Education & Training Section (ETS) Chief, support CCAF graduation events, and serve as a knowledgeable presence in the center.

You will be working directly with students, facilitating them to continue with their education and supporting them to be ready for work; you will collaborate closely with curriculum teams to deliver and plan personalised intervention sessions for students with wellbeing and pastoral needs in small groups and 1:1.

You will have a shared responsibility for monitoring and supporting students on your caseload, including those with mental health and wellbeing needs so empathy and a wider knowledge of specific support needs is important. If you do not already hold a Mental Health First Aid qualification, training will be provided.

It is essential that you are a confident liaising with not only students, but also their parents/carers and wider professionals as the role will include multi-agency working.
