My client is a market-leading, multi-faceted renewable energy developer with a project pipeline exceeding 10 GW across Europe. They have successfully developed and executed over 3GW of projects in the last 10 years.
Due to recent investment in their BESS department, they are now looking for a Senior Performance Engineer to join their team and drive forward their success and support the business in achieving their short-term and long-term goals.
Role:
As a Senior Performance Engineer, youll be in charge of maximizing the value per MWh of the company’s diverse battery storage projects. As a member of the Technical Operations Department, reporting to the Vice President of Asset Management, youll have the chance to develop and direct fleet-wide processes, strategy, and direction for all performance engineering and digital activities connected to the companys operating assets.
Key responsibilities for this role will include (but are not limited to):
- Ensure effective management of performance for battery energy storage systems (BESS) in the portfolio.
- Manage and oversee performance reporting activities.
- Keep energy models up-to-date for BESS projects.
- Collaborate with the commercial team to meet the performance modeling requirements of the company.
- Create performance processes that can be documented to improve operations.
- Review technical documents and test results to validate actual BESS performance.
- Develop operational reports that include relevant key performance indicators (KPIs)
- Identify any performance shortfalls and necessary improvements, and work with on-site teams to implement solutions.
- Provide support for BESS performance testing.
Required and desired skillsets, experience, and qualifications for this role:
- Bachelors degree in Electrical Engineering or Mathematical Science is required.
- At least 5 years of experience in solar or energy storage performance engineering is required.
- Experience in analyzing data to improve fleet performance and reliability is necessary.
- Experience in identifying and resolving product failures, optimizing plant performance, and directing performance projects with O&M and LTSA providers is required.
- Knowledge of monitoring and communications protocols, substation equipment and utility meters, battery backup systems and inverters, SCADA, and MET station equipment is required.
- Successful experience in building and delivering Performance and Engineering functions related to operating PV and BESS projects is necessary.
- Experience with industry-standard PV modeling software is required.
- Proficiency in understanding asset design documentation, performance modeling, and analysis is necessary.
- Knowledge of SCADA systems and 3rd party asset management software platforms is required.
- Management of technical contract scopes and partnerships with third-party providers is necessary.
- In-depth knowledge of power and renewable energy market dynamics is necessary.
- Ability to stay up-to-date with evolving technologies, regulations, and trends that impact the growing adoption of renewable energy.
- A Masters degree is preferred.

- Management of external Engineering Service Providers and contract staff including alignment of resource requirements and signoff of time bookings and work packages.
- Responsible for ensuring tools and processes are suitable and best fit for the engineering function, whilst ensuring consistency across the full engineering department.
- Technical specialist in the appropriate functional discipline. Able to support team members, manage escalations and make technical decisions in order to technically support the function. Skillsets include Project Engineering of Battery, Power Electronics, Electric Drive Units and Thermal systems.
- Working alongside delivery managers to allocate engineers to different programmes (vehicle and R&D) in order to deliver on the company goals.
- Champion the DFMEA process to ensure that the proposed approach provides suitable coverage for the technologies and risks associated with the programme. Advocate the fault management system to ensure that an appropriate approach is taken to resolving any outstanding faults.
Who you are
- Significant experience of Electric Powertrains (Battery to Driveshaft) within an automotive engineering environment, degree qualified in a related engineering discipline.
- Proven track record of building, maintaining and motivating high performing engineering teams.
- Finance experience with respect to managing CAPEX, recruitment and operational costs within an engineering organisation.
- Demonstrable understanding of electric powertrain architectures and underlying principles and technologies including thermal management, HV harnessing, electrical safety systems, serviceability and control strategies.
- Experience of system/component delivery within an APQP, six sigma or similar framework (FMEA, DVP, quality planning, PPAP etc) and full product lifecycle activities.
- A comprehensive understanding of the V-Cycle and its application in an automotive environment.

**We'd love to hear from you if you have:**
+ A degree in a relevant engineering, technical or scientific discipline, preferably a post-graduation in subjects related to the renewable energy sector,
+ An in-depth technical, commercial, and field knowledge regarding BESS technologies and their deployment.
+ Strong knowledge of emerging BESS technologies and the international market,
+ Strong knowledge of the BESS market and its key clients
+ Experience in developing UK utility-scale sites at any stage (experience from multiple stages would be preferred),
+ Capability to manage projects and lead a team of multi-disciplinary engineers,
+ Preferably have "Chartered Engineer" status or l progressing towards achieving Chartered status",
+ Ability to engage directly with clients for the delivery of projects and to build positive relationship to support securing future work,
+ Attention to detail; ability to multi-task and meet deadlines.

As a Principal Engineer you will focus on technical and project delivery of energy storage assignments and take a leading position in developing WSP's services in this area.

+ Leading and supporting the project and interface management between engineering and environmental disciplines (mechanical, electrical, civil, control & instrumentation, planning, environmental, etc).
+ Drafting and reviewing technical specifications, e.g. employer's requirements, evaluating tenders, and supporting negotiations for the appointments of contractors.
+ Carrying out client engagement activities, including reviewing enquiries and preparing proposals for prospective projects.
