Hours: Full-time (37 hours per week)
Contract: Temporary ongoing, no end date at the moment
Hourly rate: 21.75 p/h PAYE or 28.64 p/h Umbrella

Probation Officers play a vital role in the criminal justice system by assessing offenders and providing courts with sentencing advice that protects the public, reduces reoffending, and supports rehabilitation. This Stoke-on-Trent-based position focuses on sentence management and court work, requiring a confident and skilled practitioner who can produce high-quality reports in a busy court setting.
Key Duties and Responsibilities:
Court Work and Report Writing
Prepare Pre-Sentence Reports (PSRs) for both Magistrates and Crown Court
Deliver a caseload of Fast Delivery Reports and Standard Delivery Report
Use nDelius and OASys to inform assessments and recommendations
Attend remote or in-person court sessions as required
Risk Assessment and Public Protection
Assess risk of harm to the public and individuals using structured professional judgement tools
Contribute to Multi-Agency Public Protection Arrangements (MAPPA) where appropriate
Provide clear and evidence-based sentencing proposals to the courts
Collaboration and Sentence Management
Liaise with legal teams, court personnel, and relevant stakeholders to ensure timely and accurate report delivery
Support sentence planning following court outcomes
Maintain accurate records in line with HMPPS standards
Professional Standards
Adhere to national policies, safeguarding protocols, and data protection procedures
Engage in supervision, performance monitoring, and quality assurance processes
Essential Skills & Competencies:
Qualified Probation Officer (PQIP graduate or legacy qualifications: DipPS / CQSW / CSS with probation endorsement)
Strong working knowledge of:
Criminal justice system and sentencing guidelines
OASys and nDelius
Public protection, safeguarding, and dangerousness assessments
Experience producing PSRs under tight deadlines
Confident working independently and managing competing deadlines
Additional Information:
Based at Melbourne House, Forge Lane, Stoke-on-Trent
Must be able to attend the office as required - this is not a remote position
