You will be part of a team, which provides a business support service, including advice and guidance, to Leonardo's Electronics and Cyber business operations and functions to ensure the business remains compliant with UK and other relevant trade control laws and regulations.
As a Customs Compliance Specialist you will:
- Provide expert advice to project teams and stakeholders on customs compliance and procedures.
- Maintain accurate records in line with HMRC, DBT, and internal requirements.
- Manage and maintain customs special procedures (e.g., IP, OP, TA, CW, AEO), ensuring they are updated and renewed as needed.
- Oversee Brokers customs clearances, ensuring timely and accurate HMRC declarations.
- Complete and submit all required customs reports, including bills of discharge.
- Conduct compliance checks across key systems (Internal systems, SAP, GTS, CAT 360), addressing any discrepancies.
- Analyse MSS data to support risk assessments and ensure effective use of customs regimes.
- Review third-party import/export activity to ensure alignment with Leonardo’s customs instructions.
- Manage re-export processes to ensure any financial liabilities are discharged correctly.
- Support the correct application of the Postponed VAT Accounting (PVA) vs Deferment Account regime in collaboration with internal and external stakeholders.
- Assist in preparation for internal and external audits related to UK customs.
- Advise on import strategies for company-owned, customer-owned, and repair materials.
- Ensure customs clearance instructions are provided to brokers in a timely manner.
- Monitor MRNs to confirm accuracy of imported goods and request amendments if needed.
- Generate internal reports and ensure compliance with all record-keeping regulations.
- Support performance reviews and KPI tracking for logistics/brokers/freight providers.
- Contribute to training initiatives for logistics partners to ensure process adherence.
This is a hybrid working role, you will need to attend our Yeovil site 1-2 times a week. There may also be a requirement for some national travel as well.
What you’ll bring
- Experienced UK Customs practitioner with detailed knowledge of UK import and exports requirements
- Good knowledge of Customs Special Procedures including AEO
- Experience of Customs Valuation, Tariff Classification and Origin of goods
- Strong interpersonal/influencing skills to support decision-making based on credible knowledge of International Trade.

GENERAL SUMMARY
The Trade Compliance Specialist will report directly to the Global Trade Compliance Manager and will perform a variety of duties necessary to support the company’s global trade compliance program. The position functions as a professional expert authority with regard to export and import laws and regulations and is responsible for ensuring that operations are carried out in compliance with the relevant laws and regulations. Responsibilities also include training business personnel and executing operational audits to validate compliance with governing trade laws, internal policies and procedures.
The successful candidate will also contribute to developing and maintaining a sustained and long-term continuous improvement culture and an efficient organization that consistently produces improved results while motivating and retaining its employees with high performance standards. The Trade Compliance Specialist will work closely with operational and commercial business teams to advise them of applicability of and changes in relevant export/import laws and regulations.
PRINCIPLE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide all round global export/import compliance advice to the business.
- Develop, review, and update company export and import compliance policies, manuals and operating procedures.
- Conduct periodic training of company personnel with regard to export and import laws, regulations, policies and procedures.
- Assist the Global Trade Compliance Manager to develop and implement auditing methodology and conduct periodic audits to test company compliance with export and import regulations and Company procedures.
- Identify and classify Export (ECCN) and Import (HTS, HS) classifications for the company’s products.
- Ensure compliance with UK, U.S. and other applicable Export Control regulations, as well as conformance with internal corporate policies and procedures.
- Export controls and license determination for all exports and re-exports of tangible and intangible goods.
- UK Export Licensing: Submission and management of export license applications to the UK Department for International Trade Export Control Joint Unit via SPIRE.
- Monitor and maintain trade compliance data elements in the company’s systems.
- Support periodic internal assessments on the trade compliance program. Identify risk areas and recommend improvements.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

**Primary Function:**
Lead and drive the development of policies and procedures for compliance to all regulatory and Crane requirements for trade import and export activities within CPI. Perform random audits to ensure compliance and work with operations team to identify root cause and to drive effective countermeasures for any and all gaps. Identify areas of risk and opportunity to improve compliance and efficiency. Support foreign trade, clearance of customs, relations with national and international authorities, as well as other related parties, in order to take advantage of preferential schemes and incentives for products and raw materials which are transported and distributed around the world.
**Reporting Structure:**
This role reports to the Sr. Director of Finance and Compliance. The role is expected to lead through influence by working with the different functions within CPI to drive compliance requirements and initiatives.
**Responsibilities and Duties**
+ Evaluate the efficiency of controls and improve them continuously
+ Collaborate with stakeholder departments to monitor enforcement of standards and regulations
+ Assess the business's future ventures to identify possible compliance risks
+ Review the work of colleagues when necessary to identify compliance issues and provide advice or training
+ Keep abreast of regulatory developments within or outside of the company as well as evolving best practices in compliance control
+ Prepare reports for senior management and external regulatory bodies as appropriate
+ Develop and manage freight forwarder and customs agent relationships
+ Assure that all third-party logistics providers are operating in accordance with agreements and company policies
+ Assure that complete import and export procedures, standard shipping instructions and destination profiles are established for destination countries
+ Establish partnerships/strong relationships with other departments to build standard procedures, controls, practices, and systems
+ Develop adequate staff of skilled and trained people in all regions capable of managing international shipments originating in their local regions. Continually train staff on latest logistics and compliance policies
+ Manage the processes around preparation, implementation, and modification of export/import license applications
+ Interpret and ensure program compliance with terms and conditions of export authorizations
+ Manage the export/import compliance risk assessments
+ Development and implementation of export/import procedures, self-assessments and compliance activities
+ Research, interpret and apply complex government regulations such as the Export Administration Regulations (EAR), Customs Regulations, Harmonized Tariff Schedule (HTS)
+ Serve as the subject matter expert in trade compliance for Europe
+ Act as the point of contact for CPI's UK sites for Customs and Trade Compliance matters.
+ Conduct internal audits relating to export and import activities.
+ Maintain part master data within the ERP systems (SAP and SmartVision) relating to tariff code, country of origin and export control classification.
+ Manage SOPs with third party brokers, including part master data and clearance instructions.
+ Conduct product classification including tariff code and export control classification.
+ Conduct country of origin assessments, including verification of preferential origin status.
+ Manage Standing Authorities for third parties in CDS.
+ Manage UK export licence application process, including documentation verification and retention.
+ Act as the key liaison between any government authorities and CPI's UK sites relating to trade compliance matters.
+ Provide training relating to Trade Compliance to CPI's UK sites.
+ Support the Director of Global Trade Compliance in the development and implementation of global trade compliance policies and procedures.
**Qualifications**
+ BS or BA degree and a minimum of 5-10 years import/export administration
+ Extensive knowledge of import and export control laws and regulations as they relate to: Export Administration Regulations (EAR)

POSITION SUMMARY:
As Trade Compliance Officer you are responsible for ensuring the smooth flow of goods across borders and that Alexander Dennis fully complies with all aspects of international trade, exports, imports, and cross trade by standardising processes, being audit ready, whilst driving sales.
WHAT YOU WILL DO:
- First and foremost, you will play a key role in ensuring that goods flow as smoothly as
- Supporting colleagues, customs brokers in daily trade compliance matters.
- You will take ownership for ensuring that trade compliance data is up to date and readily available; included in this is HTS Tariff Classification, County of Origin, Valuation of Exports, Imports and Inward Processing
- As a result of this, you will play a significant role supporting with internal (ISO) audits and external audits with HMRC, ensuring a strong compliance posture.
- Validate origin status on finished goods vehicles for export markets and inbound material
- We want you to bring new ideas and ways of working, helping to drive continuous improvement, on topic such as:
- Duty reduction or cost avoidance
- Maximising FTA
- Duty regimes and accurate classifications to maximise duty opportunities
- Standardising processes across the group, including Agile ways of working in possible across borders, from our suppliers to our production sites and our international customers.
- This is of course a non-exhaustive list and you may be asked to support with other activities as required.
- Opportunities like this don’t come along often – you will have exposure to a wide range of senior stakeholders and complex projects.
WHAT YOU NEED TO BE SUCCESSFUL:
- Driven, curious, and analytical, with some prior experience in a fast-paced trade compliance role.
- You have practical hands on experience with Customs matters, exposure to customs brokers, executing clearance, managing Special Regimes (inward processing), maximising Free Trade Agreements, tariff classification (GRI), Duty management and incoterms.
- Alongside your core technical abilities, you’ll have excellent communication and interpersonal skills, being able to influence and negotiate at all levels.
- Continuous improvement mindset, with strong project management skills to make change happen. A Lean Six Sigma or Project Management qualification would be great.
- Highly IT literate, with intermediate (ideally advanced) Excel skills, as well as exposure to business intelligence/ERP systems.
- Things can be hectic here. You will thrive on being busy and be an excellent time management skills.
