We are currently recruiting for a Mechanical Design Engineer in the Severn Trent region.
You will report directly to the Principal Engineer and your role will be to provide superior quality Engineering Design services to allow the company to minimise risks and maximise profits on turnkey and engineering services contracts. You will co-ordinate the design and produce design documents and drawings taking due account of health and safety requirements, specifications and standards pertaining to the contract.
Key responsibilities will include:
Produce design layouts which are cost effective, meet the requirements of the specification and which can be constructed and commissioned effectively.
Ensure that standard practices are utilised wherever possible.
Provide estimates and feedback for proposals department.
Work to procedures and processes to ensure the continuing development of the department.
Monitor and review the procedures and processes.
Write, update and monitor efficient procedures to aid the smooth running of the department.
Ensure co-ordination of designs with all other disciplines internal and external in order to ensure that the design processes carried out on the contract are co-ordinated for the benefit of the contract as a whole.
To work within a culture where satisfying the customer is recognised as the key to achieving other objectives, and that customers include everyone receiving benefit from our processes, whether end users or other departments within the company.
Ensure designs take account of environmental issues.
Ensure that design takes full regard of all health and safety requirements.
About The Candidate
Essential:
Degree in Mechanical Engineering and have extensive practical mechanical design experience (ideally 8 - 10 years if Senior level) in a similar environment
Understand the principles of water and sewage treatment.
Ability to rationalise designs and produce economic plant layouts.
A flexible mind, with the ability to assimilate large amounts of different data at one time.
Ability to present technical proposals clearly, confidently and convincingly.
Computer literacy.

- Experience of wireless / Bluetooth communication protocols and hardware (e.g. ESP32)
- Ability to read, understand, and produce electronic schematics and technical documentation.
- Practical experience with instrumentation electronics, including noise management, frequency response, and EMI/EMC considerations.

Job Description:
The purpose of the Mechanical Design Engineer role is to carry out all aspects of mechanical design via production of 3D Models, General Arrangement drawings, and Design for Manufacture output in accordance with company procedure and/ or customer specification.
Ensure the delivery of high-quality designs that align with the intended function of the equipment, are feasible to manufacture, and are completed in line with project schedules.
Duties/Responsibilities:
- Produce modifications, and improvements to existing equipment, and products
- Identify and assess risks during the design stage related to performance, manufacturability, and lead times.
- Clearly communicate these risks to the project team and proactively adapt designs where necessary to support the overall success of the project.
- Attend site surveys and customer meetings, when required, to gather accurate dimensions and relevant information to inform and support the design process.

- Produce 2D drawings from 3D models for customer review/ approval
- Responsible for ensuring self-prepared drawings/ models/ documents are correct and concise prior to release

- Attend Design and/ or Manufacturability reviews, driving the 3D model where appropriate, and communicating design intent to the wider project team.
- Support continuous improvement initiatives to increase departmental design
- Maximise change capture within the department, ensuring all change is captured on projects.
- Provide support to the wider project team, liaising with customers as required.
- Complete adherence to ISO 9001 procedures for engineering department.
- Responsible for achieving schedule adherence for all actions assigned to individual/ role.
- Any other ad hoc duties as may be required, and as commensurate with the grade of post.
