Overview
One of Randstad’s biggest clients are looking for an experienced BMS Design Engineer to provide BMS system designs, and project engineering delivery strategies, for medium to large BMS projects.
This BMS Design Engineer should fully understand the engineering requirements of building control systems for a range of building types, varying in complexity. Candidates will need a thorough understanding of both mechanical and electrical building systems and be able to work autonomously. The role will require experience of interpreting customer specifications to develop comprehensive designs and scope packages for individual disciplines including panel design, hardware configuration, field equipment, software configuration, graphic packages as well as installation and commissioning scope. Candidates must also be prepared to work flexibly as part of the team and be pro-active with modern technologies and best practice.
Responsibilities
- Provide BMS system designs
- Provide project engineering delivery strategies for medium to large BMS projects
- Interpret customer specifications to develop comprehensive designs and scope packages for individual disciplines, including panel design, hardware configuration, field equipment, software configuration, graphic packages, as well as installation and commissioning scope
- Develop full design from initial scope to handover documentation
- Author BMS control system strategy documents
- Develop BMS hardware and software architecture and best practice
- Conduct site surveys, working around live plant and equipment
- Coordinate BMS disciplines with multiple external suppliers and subcontract companies
- Conduct pre-sales technical surveys
Essential Skills & Experience Required
- Electrical and Mechanical systems and plant knowledge
- Minimum HNC qualification in relevant discipline
- Must be prepared to undergo security screening for specific projects
- Significant industry experience in control and automation of building systems
- Comfortable in both an office and construction site environment
- Competent in site surveys, working around live plant and equipment
- A detailed understanding of specialist building systems including BMS, Electrical, Mechanical, fire safety and the BMS aspects of building networks
- Experienced in BMS/control system design, software configuration, graphic generation, control panel design
- Knowledge of PLC’s, stand-alone controllers, and energy/power control systems
- Experience in coordinating BMS disciplines with multiple external suppliers and subcontract companies
- Excellent IT skills
- Demonstrable complex problem-solving skills
- Ability to conduct pre-sales technical surveys
- Ability to lead a small team of engineers would be advantageous
- Preferably have knowledge of leading manufactures equipment/systems i.e. Siemens, Honeywell, Trend etc

This role sits at the intersection of electrical design, delivery, and innovation, supporting rollout projects across the UK, from on-street to private commercial charging schemes. You’ll play a key role in creating, reviewing, and standardising the electrical designs that power thousands of new charge points.
Key Responsibilities
- Create and maintain standard electrical design documentation and policies for EV infrastructure deployment
- Design and sign off electrical schematics for charge point installations, both on-street (DNO-connected) and private network connections
- Work collaboratively with Project Managers, engineers, suppliers, and DNOs/ICPs to ensure designs are compliant and buildable
- Support capacity assessments, grid connection applications, and technical due diligence for new sites
- Provide electrical design input during site surveys, installation planning, and fault investigations
- Ensure compliance with BS7671, DNO/ICP standards, and relevant industry regulations
- Champion safety, standardisation, and quality across all electrical design activities
What We’re Looking For
- Proven experience in commercial or industrial electrical design and installation
- Strong understanding of DNO/ICP processes, grid connections, and compliance
- C&G 2365 or equivalent (e.g. 2330) with supporting Level 3 NVQ
- 18th Edition (C&G ) and C&G (Testing & Inspection)
