We are seeking a Custom Projects Design Engineer to join our team, specialising in Material Handling Equipment for the aggregate industry. Reporting to the Senior Engineering Manager , you will be responsible for driving design initiatives from concept through to production, supporting the successful delivery of new project developments. This role will primarily focus on equipment such as tracked conveyors, hopper feeders, truck unloaders, and telescopic stackers . About The Role Youll work hand-in-hand with other engineers and partner across teams such as sales, manufacturing, purchasing, and service. In this role, youll take ideas from concept through to final design, help manage and coordinate project activities, and play a key part in supporting our existing product range. Youll also get involved in testing and analysis of both new and current equipmentcontributing directly to Astecs mission of driving innovation and expanding our product portfolio. The preferred site location is Omagh , Northern Ireland. You will be trained to industry best practice standards and work with leading technologies and software. Required Criteria Follow and actively support all company policies and procedures, to include a primary emphasis on safe operations. Minimum of bachelors degree in Mechanical, Agriculture, Mechatronics, Industrial Engineering or related field. Minimum 3 years experience in equipment design and manufacturing (mechanical, structural, hydraulic and electrical/control system design). Ability to take responsibility for the completion of projects - achieving due dates and pre-defined requirements defined by management while working independently with minimal supervision. Innovative and able to come up with new design concepts and solutions to problems encountered during the design process Proficient with personal computing, Microsoft Office Suite, 3-D CAD software applications (SolidWorks preferred) and ERP systems (Epicor/Oracle preferred). Ability to develop and/or guide necessary computations such as load development, stress analysis, performance measurement, hydraulic circuit analysis, costing, etc. and interpret the results as necessary. Understanding/experience with the engineering design process and new product development. Ability to read, interpret and create engineering drawings and standards. Understanding of materials, materials sciences and material properties as they relate to engineering decisions and materials selection. Ability to make a financial and technical case for engineering design decisions Understanding of manufacturing practices including cutting, forming and welding of metals. Maintain positive, cooperative working relationships by working, interacting, and communicating with various personalities, getting along with customers, vendors, co-workers and management, working both individually and as part of a team. Good organization and time-management skills. Desired Criteria Experience in the design of bespoke material handling plant from concept through to production. The Company

Aqualiner’s mission is to create a global solution for renewing aged drinking water pipes, this is patented technology and has unique regulatory approval for drinking water in the UK. 

The business has been trading for fifteen years with a high-profile presence in the water industry and hugely pertinent offering to the challenges of climate change and provision of safe and clean water supply.

The Role

Working in the Loughborough HQ, you will personally lead and be operationally “hands on” undertaking the R&D work required to further develop the Aqualiner system. You will also be responsible for ensuring the workshop is operating in a clean and safe manner and the engineering team have your appropriate support to deliver their required tasks.

You will be supporting the physical R&D infrastructure for complex problem investigation and product development.

Further requirements include personal creation and management of the CAD data and relevant updates to the design data, supporting the ongoing review of materials including testing and analysis for the composite material aspects of the Aqualiner product.


The Person

You will ideally possess a degree level qualification or similar within an engineering discipline such as Mechanical Engineering, Electrical or Electronic Engineering. 

You will be conversant with working in a technically challenging and innovative product R&D environment and delivering practical solutions to the engineering challenges.

You will be well versed with using CAD systems for producing mechanical drawings working in a multi-disciplinary engineering environment and being able to develop and build solutions in a collaborative and highly ‘hands on’ manner.

What We're Looking For

  • A strong academic background in Mechanical or General Engineering (MEng, MSc preferred)
  • Chartered Engineer status, or actively working towards it
  • Significant experience delivering bespoke engineering design projects, with a proven track record in leadership roles
  • Deep understanding of high-integrity systems and working within regulated industries
  • Hands-on experience with FEED, Design for Manufacture, and full lifecycle engineering
  • A confident communicator and team leader, able to engage effectively with stakeholders at all levels
  • Must be eligible to obtain SC clearance within 6 months of joining
