The Role

Our client, a leading civil engineering consultancy, is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Senior Civil Engineer with a specialization in Geotechnical Engineering to join their team in Milton Keynes, Buckinghamshire, UK . This role is crucial for managing and delivering complex geotechnical projects from conception through to completion, ensuring high standards of technical quality, safety, and client satisfaction.

As a Senior Civil Engineer - Geotechnical, you will be responsible for leading the design and analysis of foundations, slopes, earthworks, and other geotechnical structures. Your duties will include planning and supervising site investigations, interpreting soil and rock mechanics data, and developing appropriate design solutions. You will prepare detailed geotechnical reports, specifications, and drawings, ensuring compliance with relevant industry standards and regulations. This role involves managing project teams, mentoring junior engineers, and acting as a technical point of contact for clients, contractors, and regulatory authorities. You will also be responsible for overseeing project budgets, timelines, and resource allocation, ensuring profitable and timely project delivery. A strong understanding of ground improvement techniques, seismic design principles, and advanced numerical modeling will be highly advantageous. Risk management and the implementation of best practices in health and safety are paramount. The ability to conduct site visits, liaise effectively with stakeholders, and contribute to business development efforts, including proposal writing and client relationship management, is essential.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the geotechnical design for various civil engineering projects.
  • Plan, manage, and interpret results from site investigations (e.g., boreholes, CPTs).
  • Prepare comprehensive geotechnical design reports, calculations, and drawings.
  • Ensure designs comply with relevant codes, standards (e.g., Eurocodes), and regulations.
  • Manage project execution, including timelines, budgets, and resources.
  • Mentor and supervise junior geotechnical engineers and technicians.
  • Liaise with clients, contractors, regulatory bodies, and other consultants.
  • Conduct site inspections and provide technical support during construction.
  • Evaluate and implement appropriate ground improvement and foundation solutions.
  • Contribute to business development activities, including proposal preparation.
Required Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Civil Engineering or a related discipline with a specialization in Geotechnical Engineering.
  • Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or working towards it is highly desirable.
  • Minimum of 7 years of relevant experience in geotechnical engineering design and project management.
  • Proficiency in geotechnical software packages (e.g., PLAXIS, GeoStudio, SLOPE/W).
  • Strong understanding of soil mechanics, rock mechanics, and foundation engineering principles.
  • Experience in managing site investigations and interpreting geological data.
  • Excellent report writing, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to lead project teams and manage client relationships.
  • Knowledge of relevant UK and international engineering standards.
  • Experience in risk assessment and site safety management.
