The Role:
As Assessment Manager for our Forensics portfolio, you will lead and manage accreditation assessments across forensic services in the United Kingdom. You will act as the key point of contact for customers, ensuring assessment activities are completed with rigour, impartiality and excellent stakeholder engagement.

- Determine appropriate assessment strategies and approaches

The eDiscovery and Digital Forensics unit is typically engaged to assist with data collections, processing and review support in the context of investigations, disputes, turnaround, restructuring and process improvement engagements and other critical business issues. The team’s advisory work involves large and diverse data sets across client enterprises including email, servers, cloud storage, social media, mobile devices, instant messaging, and collaboration tools. The team works with data analytics and subject matter experts to assess and support the needs of the client's specific situation.
Role Overview
The role will involve the delivery of eDiscovery services to our clients and contributing to the overall operation of the unit. This would include:
- Project management for the delivery of eDiscovery services to our clients, including data processing and review workflows;
- Working closely with the client/their lawyers to become familiar with their objectives and challenges;
- Being the principal day-to-day point of contact for the client and managing the lifecycle of the project, including billing;
- Managing workstreams and teams as part of the wider project delivery;
- Understanding of the EDRM model and applying advanced, strategic eDiscovery work flows to assist clients with complex information challenges;
- Researching developments and new tools in the eDiscovery arena;
- Familiarity with data collection management and data integrity;
- Producing reports (which may include witness statements) relating to the provenance or integrity of data collected;
- Supporting business development activities such as client presentations and pitches;
- Mentoring, supervising and delegating tasks to junior colleagues to support their day-to-day work, training and professional development;
- Building relationships with current and potential future clients, demonstrating capabilities to potential clients, and providing supporting documentation, including proposals and cost estimates;
- Assisting in the management of finances of each engagement including documenting project budgets, adjusting budgets as appropriate, communicating changes in budgets internally and to the client, and managing the revenue forecasting and invoicing process;
- Reviewing and discussing expectations, anticipated scope of work, and project timelines with clients;
- Managing project close-out processes including data return and database archival, ensuring that clients understand the implications of on-going data retention relative to their company’s policies;

HMRC's Fraud Investigation Service (FIS) is responsible for the department's civil and criminal investigations.
Covert Operations, Digital Exploitation (CODE) sits within FIS. Working across Law Enforcement and government, CODE provides investigative tools and covert techniques to front-line investigations and works with key partners to develop and provide access to new technology and systems to enable investigators to respond to serious and complex tax evasion and crime.
Cybercrime & Forensic Services (C&FS) provides critical support to FIS investigations as part of CODE nationally through the provision of important forensic services. C&FS are responsible for supporting warrant executions to preserve and analyse digital evidence through to investigation and presentation in court.
The Forensic Science Regulator (FSR) has provided clear instruction that all forensic service providers within the criminal justice system must be compliant with the FSR Codes of Practice as well as relevant ISO standards for the conduct of forensic activities. There are several areas across C&FS which needs to comply with the FSR Codes and require support.
This is a unique opportunity to be part of the team responsible for critical elements of our services provided to HMRC investigation teams. You will ensure that all aspects of digital forensics activity are carried out to the highest standard, adhering to forensic strategy and principles, and meeting FSR requirements.
Job description
Digital Forensics Technical Managers report to the Senior Technical Managers, who in turn report to the Technical Lead, who sits on the C&FS Senior Leadership Team.
Working alongside operational forensic practitioners, the Digital Forensics Technical Managers are responsible for developing and delivering documented technical procedures, maintaining quality checks, the competency framework and validation of tools and procedures, as well as ensuring maintenance of obtained UKAS accreditation to the required standards.
Digital Forensics Technical Managers deal with a wide variety of digital evidence as well as handling, extracting, processing, analysing and presenting findings in a factual and forensically sound manner for further investigation and court. The Technical Management team also supports the wider digital forensic team with operational forensic tasks.
Digital Forensic Technical Managers are also responsible for conducting operationally led research and development to create novel solutions to challenges that arise with evidential items.
Person specification
The successful candidate for the Digital Forensics Technical Manager role will be undertaking the following duties:
- Implementing and maintaining records within the C&FS Quality Management System for Documented Technical Procedures, staff competency assessments, validation of both procedures and tools.
- Supporting the wider technical management team in conducting their duties to support the Quality Management System for forensic procedures
- Collaborate with the Quality Assurance team to ensure compliance with the FSR: Code of Practice and ISO17025 / ISO17020.
- Coordinate Proficiency Test and Inter/Intra Laboratory comparison schemes.
- Represent HMRC C&FS at external assessments conducted by UKAS.
- Conducting some aspects of operationally driven research and development, conducting research into new technology and documenting findings.
The successful candidate will also be expected to:
- Capture, process and analyse digital devices for presentation to the Criminal Justice System.
- Attend search of premises with FIS investigation teams to preserve and triage digital data.
- Attend court as a professional witness.
- Carry out any duties commensurate to the role that is determined by senior leadership.
Essential Criteria
- Demonstrable experience of supporting the writing of Documented Technical Processes (DTPs, also known as Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs)), within an ISO17025 accredited environment, and/or Forensic Science Regulator: Codes of Practice compliant environment.
- Demonstrable experience of assessing and testing staff competency, or helping to identify any nonconformance within working practices.
- Demonstrable experience in Digital Forensics conducting forensic examinations of digital devices, using industry standard forensic tools.
- To have a methodical approach to problem solving with technical skills being required.
- Confident communicator in both verbal and written communications, with a professional and personable manner, able to interact with all levels of process stakeholders.
- Hold a full UK driving license.
Desirable Criteria
- Operational search and seizure experience at scenes.
- Experience of negotiating and influencing discussion, decisions and change with internal and/or external partners and agencies.
Flexibility Payment
This post attracts a Level 2 Flexibility Payment (FP) that is paid monthly with salary. This FP allows HMRC flexibility to change your work pattern, at short notice, to meet business needs. You will be expected to undertake periods of On Call. You will also be expected to work additional hours, at weekends and outside your normal working hours/days (including bank holidays).

We now have an exciting opportunity for an Associate Director to join our Digital Forensics and Incident Response (DFIR) team in London. As the senior member of the EMEA DFIR team with deep digital forensic experience, you will be integral to the wider EMEA practice, and in turn part of a global practice offering and influencing the direction of our forensic technology and digital forensics incident response capability. The Discovery and Data Insights department is the hub of all technical consulting and you will provide digital forensics and incident response solutions for matters which involve cyber response investigations, digital forensic investigations, eDiscovery and data analytics. Our clients include law firms and Fortune 500 multi-nationals across the globe.
Day to day, you will be executing and managing matters that arise on short notice and there will be a need to deploy the team and support crises. As the technical lead for engagements, you will provide direction to empower the team and provide quality assured, highly responsive forensic incident management. A significant portion of the role will require you to engage across the business to leverage technology consulting into all business development and go-to-market strategy. You will be responsible for increasing the technical team’s visibility and capability in performing business development and supporting marketing initiatives, from thought leaders, white papers, technical demonstrations and collaborative meetings with our colleagues with clients. This role will play a key part in ensuring our ongoing growth and success across the region.
Responsibilities
- Manage and provide forensic incident response consultancy and expertise in scoping data estates, data collections, investigative analysis to our clients

- Proven knowledge and technical computer forensics experience for cyber incident response and investigations. Thorough understanding of best practice procedures (MITRE ATT&CK framework, NPCC, NIST, SANS etc.) evidence handling, computer systems and tools of the trade
- Expert understanding of multiple operating systems, particularly Microsoft and Linux infrastructure and networking systems, both on-premise and in the cloud, as well as dedicated cloud services such as Microsoft 365/Azure, Google Workspace, AWS etc.
- Expertise in PowerShell scripting, Bash scripts, Python, SQL and data wrangling for log analysis
- Expertise with the industry standard forensic software tools such as X-Ways, EnCase, Nuix, Axiom, Cellebrite and forensic hardware tools.
- Expertise with open-source tools (such as Velociraptor) and leveraging commercial tools (such as X-Ways, EnCase and Nuix) for forensic use.
- Established track record for performing forensic collections, involvement in incident response and digital investigations alongside maintaining detailed contemporaneous notes
