Job Description

About us

At Zego, we know that traditional motor insurance holds good drivers back. It’s too complicated, too expensive, and it doesn't take into account how well you actually drive.

That’s why, since 2016, we’ve been on a mission to change all of that. Our mission at Zego is to offer the lowest priced insurance for good drivers.

From van drivers and gig workers to everyday car drivers, our customers are our driving force — they’re at the heart of everything we do.

We’ve sold tens of millions of policies so far, and raised over $200 million in funding. And we’re only just getting started.

About the role

We’re looking for a Lead Frontend Engineer to lead the next generation of digital experiences at Zego. You’ll join a high-impact B2C product team and take ownership of building and scaling intuitive, performant, and inclusive user interfaces.

This is more than just a senior engineering role, you’ll act as a technical lead within your team. You’ll shape architecture, coach engineers, and help us move from a legacy monolith to a micro-frontends ecosystem powered by React, Next.js, and a BFF pattern.

What you will be doing

      • Drive frontend strategy in an environment where quality, usability and reliability matter.
      • Lead development of scalable and accessible front-end products using React, Next.js, and TypeScript.

      • Architect user journeys that power onboarding, quoting, and policy management for thousands of drivers.
      • Contribute to backend services connected to the frontend
      • Drive consistency, speed, and reliability in our front-end by shaping our design, improving performance, and ensuring we can monitor and debug issues effectively.

      • Partner with product and design to rapidly test ideas, validate hypotheses, and ship iteratively.

      • Mentor other engineers through code reviews, pair programming, and continuous feedback.

      • Improve CI/CD workflows and automate test coverage for rapid, safe deployments.

      • Take ownership of cross-team initiatives and lead conversations across frontend and backend boundaries
      • Embrace AI tools and workflows to accelerate development and improve quality.

About you

      • You bring full-stack experience but focus your expertise on frontend development. You're confident working across the stack when needed, including diving into backend code and making sense of the wider architecture
      • You have experience leading a team of multiple Front End Engineers working on a technically complex problem space.
      • You’re passionate about crafting seamless digital experiences that are accessible and delightful.

      • You bring commercial experience with React and Next.js or similar modern frameworks in production, ideally with GraphQL, gRPC and REST.

      • You care about writing clean, tested, maintainable code and know when to optimise.

      • You’ve taken products through the full lifecycle from discovery through to scale.

      • You lead by example and bring others with you, through mentorship and collaboration.

      • You’re tenacious and resourceful, able to find a way through difficult problems and make progress in ambiguous situations. You consistently bring a pragmatic mindset to engineering challenges and lean toward simplicity and maintainability over over-engineering.

      • You’re proactive by nature. You spot issues before they become blockers, and you take ownership- raising them early, bringing the right people into the conversation, and helping the team find the right path forward.

      • You have experience designing and implementing automated testing from scratch, and you’re confident in shaping the testing strategy for a codebase. You take ownership of quality and help ensure we ship reliable, predictable front-end experiences.
      • You will be someone who’s actively curious about how AI can enhance your work - keen to experiment, learn quickly, and apply tools that improve productivity, streamline tasks, or unlock new ways of thinking. Whether you’re already hands-on or fast building confidence, you take ownership of staying ahead and working smarter

What’s it like to work at Zego?

Joining Zego is a career-defining move. People go further here, reaching their full potential to achieve extraordinary things.

We’re spread throughout the UK and Europe, and united by our drive to get things done. We’re proud of our company and our culture – a friendly and inclusive space where we can lift each other up and celebrate our wins every day.

Together, we’re setting the bar higher, delivering exceptional work that makes a difference. Our people are the most important part of our story, and everyone here plays a role. There’s loads of room to learn and grow, and you’ll get the freedom to steer your career wherever you want.

You’ll work alongside a talented group who embrace each other's differences and aren’t afraid of a challenge. We recognise our achievements, learn from our mistakes, and help each other to be the best we can be. Together, we’re making insurance matter.

How we work

We believe that teams work better when they have time to collaborate and space to get things done. We call it Zego Hybrid. While some of our team choose to come into our central London office once a week, we’re flexible - some people prefer being in once a month or even quarterly. It’s all about finding the right balance between collaborative face time and focused home-working, so we can achieve great results while maintaining a healthy work-life balance.

Our approach to AI

We believe in the power of AI to meaningfully improve how we work - helping us move faster, think differently, and focus on what matters most. At Zego, we encourage people to stay curious and intentional about how AI is leveraged in their work and teams to drive practical impact every day. This is your chance to do the most meaningful work of your career - and we’ll provide you with the tools, support, and freedom to do it well.

Benefits

We reward our people well. Join us and you’ll get a market-competitive salary, private medical insurance, company share options, generous holiday allowance, and a whole lot of wellbeing benefits. We also offer an annual flexible hybrid working contribution, which you can use to support with your travel to the office or towards your own personal development. And that’s just for starters!

We’re an equal opportunity employer and we value diversity at our company. We do not discriminate on the basis of race, religion, national origin, gender, sexual orientation, age, marital status, or disability status.

We’ve sold tens of millions of policies so far, and raised over $200 million in funding. And we’re only just getting started.

About the role

We’re looking for a Senior Front End Engineer to help shape the future of our B2C products at Zego. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the heart of a cross-functional, agile, and diverse team that’s focused on delivering intuitive, high-impact digital experiences to our customers.

Our B2C team is evolving rapidly- we're moving from a monolithic codebase to a modern microservices architecture, using a Backend-for-Frontend (BFF) approach. You'll be working with technologies like React, Next.js and TypeScript, building highly scalable and performant user interfaces.

What you will be doing

  • Deliver a seamless, customer-first onboarding journey that supports a wide range of drivers and policy types.
  • Contribute to backend services connected to the frontend

  • Lead the development of new products and features with a focus on performance, maintainability, and scalability.

  • Continuously improve and evolve our existing digital products to deliver market-leading insurance experiences.

  • Mentor and support other engineers, helping to raise the bar for the entire team.

  • Drive code quality through thoughtful code reviews, pair programming, and a strong QA mindset.

  • Collaborate closely with Product Managers and Designers to bring ideas to life—fast.

  • Contribute to a high-performing engineering culture with CI/CD practices that allow us to deploy to production up to 20 times a day.

About you

  • You have a strong passion for front end development and user experience.
  • You bring full-stack experience but focus your expertise on frontend development. You're confident working across the stack when needed, including diving into backend code and making sense of the wider architecture

  • You have commercial experience working with NextJS using protocols such as GraphQL and gRPC in a production environment.

  • You’re familiar with accessibility standards and understand how to build inclusive user interfaces.

  • You’ve seen projects through the entire development lifecycle, from ideation to production.

  • You write clean, tested, and maintainable code and you care about getting it right.

  • You’re curious and proactive, always looking to improve, experiment, and learn.
  • You will be someone who’s actively curious about how AI can enhance your work - keen to experiment, learn quickly, and apply tools that improve productivity, streamline tasks, or unlock new ways of thinking. Whether you’re already hands-on or fast building confidence, you take ownership of staying ahead and working smarter.
