Role Overview
The Head of Legal will be the senior legal advisor to the executive team, responsible for the company’s legal risk management and corporate governance . With a hands-on approach, you will handle complex legal tasks directly, including contract drafting, negotiating corporate agreements, and providing real-time advice . You will also lead the legal strategy for key business areas including corporate structuring, joint ventures, acquisitions, and real estate development .
This role requires a strategic mindset and practical legal experience, managing legal issues that affect the business’s operations in real estate, hospitality, and large-scale events.
Key Responsibilities
- Contract Management: Draft, review, and negotiate a wide range of commercial, real estate, and funding agreements , ensuring compliance with relevant laws and protecting the company’s interests.
- Corporate Structuring & Transactions: Lead corporate structuring exercises , and manage joint ventures, acquisitions, and debt financing . Take ownership of legal due diligence processes and act as the primary negotiator for complex transactions.
- Legal Risk Management: Oversee and proactively manage legal risks across the organisation, including IP issues, GDPR compliance, insurance claims, and contentious matters .
- Governance & Compliance: Work closely with the Risk & Compliance Manager to ensure internal compliance is maintained across the group, providing regular reports to the CFO and CEO.
- Team Leadership: Manage a small legal team and ensure effective support across various functions. Mentor and develop direct reports, promoting a culture of continuous learning and professional growth.
- Stakeholder Management: Act as the main legal contact for external stakeholders, including law firms, planning consultants, and insurance specialists .
About You
We’re looking for a legal leader with broad corporate/commercial experience , ideally gained within an in-house role or at a leading law firm. You should be adept at working in fast-paced environments, able to handle complex legal issues with both strategic vision and hands-on problem-solving skills.
Skills & Experience:
- Extensive post-qualification experience in corporate/commercial law , with a strong focus on real estate, transactions, joint ventures, and acquisitions
- Proven track record of negotiating complex contracts and advising on commercial decisions with significant business impact
- Strong understanding of risk management, compliance, and governance
- Demonstrated ability to draft and review legal documents with a keen eye for detail
- Experience in leading legal teams and managing external legal service providers
- Hands-on approach to legal work and comfortable working across multiple areas of law, including data privacy, IP, and regulatory compliance

Head of Legal: Contracts and Commercial Team, PayPoint Group
The role reports to the General Counsel and is based in the PayPoint head office in Welwyn Garden City.
You will be a senior member of the wider PayPoint Group legal team comprising 10 lawyers.
MAIN PURPOSE OF ROLE
- This is a broad commercial role which involves leading and managing a small legal team of 3, supporting a high volume of contracts for all businesses across the PayPoint Group.
- The role will include drafting and negotiating large, complex commercial agreements for innovative new FinTech services for PayPoint’s clients (including services provided by PayPoint’s FCA regulated businesses) in collaboration with senior internal stakeholders, advising on other strategic matters, supplier contracts and providing ad hoc commercially focussed legal support to the business, including on GDPR, data protection and data security issues.
MAIN RESPONSIBILITIES AND REQUIREMENTS
Responsibilities
- Lead, guide and develop the Contracts and Commercial Legal Team to ensure an efficient and effective team that is able to meet the needs of the business.
- Lead the team in its provision of legal support, allocating and prioritising work effectively across the team and providing guidance to team members as appropriate.
- Draft and negotiate large, complex commercial agreements, including for PayPoint’s FCA regulated businesses in collaboration with senior internal stakeholders.

- We are looking for a qualified lawyer, with a minimum of 5 years PQE with a strong academic background.
- Proven commercial contracts expertise; strong technical drafting skills.
- Experience of GDPR, data protection and data security issues is essential.
- Experience of working with FCA regulated business and a basic understanding of regulatory principles and themes is essential. Experience of working in the FinTech or payments sectors is an advantage but is not essential.
- Strong in-house experience in a similar role with some managerial responsibility is preferred.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills and adept at liaising with stakeholders from all levels of the business.
- Demonstrable people management/ supervisory/ team leadership experience.
- Ability to identify and communicate key legal issues to a non legal audience.
- Highly credible with pragmatic approach.
