About the Role
We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Vehicle Maintenance Fitter to join our team and help keep our fleet safe, compliant, and operational. In this vital role, you will ensure that all Council-owned vehicles, plant, and machinery are maintained to the highest standards and in line with legal, safety, and Council requirements.
You will be responsible for a wide range of tasks, including servicing and repairs, conducting taxi compliance checks, and preparing vehicles for Class 4 and 7 MOT inspections. You will also provide mobile roadside support during working hours, including attendance at landfill sites when required.
Key Responsibilities
Carry out servicing, repairs, and maintenance of Council vehicles, plant, and machinery in line with VOSA and Council standards.
Conduct MOT preparations (Class 4 and 7), including checks for compliance with Department of Transport regulations.
Perform taxi compliance testing on Hackney Carriages and other licensed hire vehicles.
Respond to vehicle breakdowns during working hours, including at roadside and landfill locations.
Maintain accurate records of all work carried out, ensuring compliance with VOSA and internal reporting procedures.
Ensure all workshop practices and vehicle repairs comply with Health and Safety requirements.
Keep the workshop area clean, safe, and well-organised, including appropriate storage and maintenance of tools and equipment.
About You
Essential Criteria:
Strong knowledge of vehicle maintenance and repair, including health and safety and compliance protocols.
Ability to diagnose and fix a wide range of vehicle issues efficiently and effectively.
Willingness to work flexibly, including occasional weekends and bank holidays, as operational needs require.
Ability to provide courteous and professional service when dealing with internal teams and the public.
A proactive approach to safety, with a clear understanding of workplace health and safety procedures.
Desirable Criteria:
Formal qualifications related to MOT Class 4 and 7 preparations and taxi compliance testing (or willingness to complete training).
Previous experience working in a public sector or local authority environment.
Working knowledge of VOSA standards and vehicle compliance regulations.
