Copello are working with an International defence client who are seeking a motivated and skilled Manufacturing Engineer to join their dynamic team. This role offers the opportunity to design, develop, implement, and optimise manufacturing processes for antennas, avionics, logic control units and associated technologies.
 
As a key member of the team, you will leverage your expertise to enhance design and manufacturing efficiency while ensuring the production of high-quality products. Collaboration will be central to the role, as you’ll partner with cross-functional teams, including design, quality and production, to align objectives and streamline operations.
 
Key responsibilities
Manufacturing Support
- Provide real-time technical support to resolve production issues related to paint and test processes, including equipment failures, quality concerns, and process inefficiencies.
- Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions to minimise downtime and improve reliability.
- Collaborate cross-functionally with teams (e.g., Quality Control, Production, Maintenance) to address and resolve production challenges.
- Identify and implement opportunities for process optimisation, cost reduction, and continuous improvement.
- Specify, design, and integrate tools, jigs, fixtures, and other manufacturing aids to streamline paint and test operations.
- Develop, update, and maintain comprehensive production documentation, including job routings and work instructions.
- Monitor and analyse production data to track performance, identify trends, and suggest improvements.
 
New Product Development
- Support Design for Manufacture (DFM) activities for new and existing products, focusing on paint and test readiness.
- Manage manufacturing activities during the transition from development to production.
- Mitigate risks related to component handling, paint compatibility, and test reliability.
 
Test & Validation
- Provide support for functional and environmental testing, validation, and performance verification of products.
- Coordinate with test department and production teams to resolve any discrepancies or failure modes during testing.
- Ensure compliance with test specifications and quality standards.
 
Qualifications and experience
- Qualified in Manufacturing/Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline, with experience in paint and test processes.
- Proven experience in a manufacturing or production engineering role, ideally within aerospace, electronics, or similar industries.
- Experience working within a defence environment.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, equipment, and quality systems related to paint and test.
- Experience in identifying and delivering productivity improvements.
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and Six Sigma methodologies would be advantageous.
- Knowledge of quality standards such as EN9100 advantageous.

As a member of the Manufacturing Engineering Team, the Manufacturing Engineer will report to the Manufacturing Engineer Manager working across Civil and Defence business lines and based at our Luton site, occasional travel to visit equipment suppliers will be required. The Manufacturing Engineer will work on several value streams within current programmes developing new and existing manufacturing processes whilst supporting the day-to-day operations team at Luton.
Job Responsibilities
• Develop, document and optimise new and existing manufacturing processes such as creation/amendment SOP (Standard Operating Procedure) and Process Specifications
• Create and update engineering documentation to maintain configuration control and help manage point of introduction activities, first article inspection and customer approval
• Lead structured problem solving projects linked to both project deliverables and day-to-day manufacturing issues
• Provide day-to-day support to manufacturing operations
• Provide MRB (Material Review Board) support to existing programmes to ensure any process deviation or product faults are reviewed and answered
• Reduce process driven scrap and rework and support continuous improvement activities
• Establish appropriate new process controls and improve existing ones
• Be compliant with the Company’s Environmental, Health & Safety and Energy procedures. 
Core operational hours at our Luton site are: 07:30 - 16:30 Monday to Thursday & 07:30 - 12:30 Friday.
How You'll Contribute

Essential: 
• Minimum HND qualification (or equivalent) in Mechanical, Electrical, Industrial or Manufacturing Engineering/Aerospace
• Demonstrable Manufacturing Engineering experience gained from ideally the Aerospace, Automotive, Yellow Goods industry
• Demonstrable experience of practical problem-solving techniques using A3 or 8D

- SAP experience.
- The ability to interpret Design Drawings with a view to producing Manufacturing Build Instructions.
- Experience in Electronic subassembly manufacture through to System level builds.
- Experience and knowledge of the assembly process for small/miniature Electro-Mechanical Actuation Systems.

Key Accountabilities:
- Evaluate quality control processes and make recommendations for improvements in quality control.
- Analyse production processes, schedules, methods and other data and then provide management with reports containing the data and statistics to enable management to better understand future requirements needed for the manufacturing process.
- Ensure that the company’s manufacturing processes are in compliance with all government laws and regulations.
- Review and calculate labour, material and other production costs along with reviewing schedules and future production requirements to assist management in decision making.

The role:
The Operations Engineering team provides engineering resources to support Operational performance and major product development projects; from design through to engineering build and production support, to end of life of product.
The team provides full product lifecycle support including prototype design & build, development and integration of the build documentation and supporting requirements of full production build.
This role will focus on involvement through the full product lifecycle, with the aim to reduce manufacturing costs and improve yield at all stages, which will directly impact our customers, whilst supporting the Programme in delivery of the milestones.
As part of the Operations Engineering Team, the Manufacturing Engineer is the recognised point of contact for all matters related to their area of expertise, providing engineering advice, problem solving and co-ordination of activities in support of current and future business.
You will drive a proactive approach to right first time quality to promote growth, will enhance the reputation of the business through exceptional quality standards and contribute towards a significant reduction in overall manufacturing costs.
What will I be doing?
- Develop manufacturing processes.
- Defining sequence of operations, procedures and production layouts for assemblies, equipment installation, processing and material handling taking into account flow and lean philosophies.
- Providing Basis of Estimates for engineering activities and shop floor operations across a range of technologies and disciplines.
- Identifying any new tooling & fixturing requirements.
- Experienced in the creation of Technical Requirement Specifications.
- Creation of detailed process instructions.
- Creation of Manufacturing BOM’s / routings to aid ease of manufacture.
- Active involvement in the Level 1 & 2 MDWT (Mission Directed Work Team) meetings.
- Support and contribute the relevant section of the Technology Roadmap to identify improvements to current manufacturing processes and future requirements.
- Assist with the Technical requirements of the relevant section of the Capital plan from definition to acceptance.
- Supporting full rate production of a range of products aligned to the LMUK Ampthill Business requirements.
- Close liaison of activities with Industrial Engineering, Production Engineering and other functions as necessary.
- Support with the business process reviews and generation / update of relevant documentation.

Skills required
- Detailed Assembly Processing knowledge (Electro Mechanical, Bonding, etc).
- Knowledge of Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma and quality improvement tools.
- Experience with CAD software for generating 2D technical drawings.
- Solid understanding of MRP systems and experience managing BOMs and routings in SAP (or similar ERP systems).
- Proven ability to drive cultural and process change, improving efficiency and quality.
- A collaborative mindset with a passion for continuous improvement.
- Composite processing knowledge would be beneficial.

This role offers the opportunity to design, develop, implement, and optimise manufacturing processes for antennas, avionics, logic control units and associated technologies.
As a key member of the team, you will leverage your expertise to enhance design and manufacturing efficiency while ensuring the production of high-quality products. Collaboration will be central to the role, as you’ll partner with cross‑functional teams, including design, quality and production, to align objectives and streamline operations.
Key responsibilities- Provide real‑time technical support to resolve production issues related to paint and test processes, including equipment failures, quality concerns, and process inefficiencies.
- Conduct root cause analysis and implement corrective actions to minimise downtime and improve reliability.
- Collaborate cross‑functionally with teams (e.g., Quality Control, Production, Maintenance) to address and resolve production challenges.
- Identify and implement opportunities for process optimisation, cost reduction, and continuous improvement.
- Specify, design, and integrate tools, jigs, fixtures, and other manufacturing aids to streamline paint and test operations.
- Develop, update, and maintain comprehensive production documentation, including job routings and work instructions.
- Monitor and analyse production data to track performance, identify trends, and suggest improvements.
- Support Design for Manufacture (DFM) activities for new and existing products, focusing on paint and test readiness.
- Manage manufacturing activities during the transition from development to production.
- Mitigate risks related to component handling, paint compatibility, and test reliability.
- Provide support for functional and environmental testing, validation, and performance verification of products.
- Coordinate with test department and production teams to resolve any discrepancies or failure modes during testing.
- Ensure compliance with test specifications and quality standards.
- Qualified in Manufacturing/Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or a related technical discipline, with experience in paint and test processes.
- Proven experience in a manufacturing or production engineering role, ideally within aerospace, electronics, or similar industries.
- Experience working within a defence environment.
- Strong understanding of manufacturing processes, equipment, and quality systems related to paint and test.
- Experience in identifying and delivering productivity improvements.
- Familiarity with lean manufacturing principles and Six Sigma methodologies would be advantageous.
- Knowledge of quality standards such as EN9100 advantageous.
SC Clearance must be obtainable for this role.
