Our client, a prestigious international shipping and logistics company, is seeking a highly experienced Senior Legal Counsel with expertise in maritime law. This critical role is based in Plymouth, Devon, UK , and will involve providing comprehensive legal advice and support across a wide range of maritime legal matters. The successful candidate will play a key role in mitigating legal risks, ensuring regulatory compliance, and contributing to the company's strategic objectives within the complex global maritime industry. Responsibilities include drafting and reviewing contracts, managing disputes and litigation, advising on international maritime regulations, and supporting vessel operations.

Key Responsibilities:
- Provide expert legal advice on all aspects of maritime law, including shipping contracts (e.g., charter parties, bills of lading), cargo claims, collisions, salvage, and marine insurance.
- Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of commercial agreements, including vessel construction contracts, sale and purchase agreements, and joint venture agreements.
- Manage and oversee contentious matters, including arbitration and litigation, liaising with external counsel as necessary.
- Advise on compliance with international maritime conventions (e.g., SOLAS, MARPOL) and national regulations.
- Conduct legal research and provide timely, accurate advice on complex legal issues impacting the company's operations.
- Support the company's fleet operations by providing legal guidance on regulatory compliance, flag state requirements, and port state control issues.
- Assist with corporate governance matters and compliance programs.
- Develop and deliver legal training to internal stakeholders.
- Manage relationships with external law firms and service providers.
- Contribute to the development and implementation of risk management strategies within the legal department.
Qualifications:
- Admitted to practice law in England and Wales (or equivalent common law jurisdiction).
- Significant post-qualification experience (minimum 7 years) as a lawyer specializing in maritime law, either in private practice or in-house.
- In-depth knowledge of international maritime conventions, regulations, and industry practices.
- Proven experience in drafting and negotiating complex shipping contracts and commercial agreements.
- Strong track record in managing maritime disputes, arbitration, and litigation.
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and strategic thinking skills.
- Outstanding negotiation and communication skills, with the ability to influence stakeholders at all levels.
- Fluency in English is essential; knowledge of other relevant languages is a plus.
- Experience working within a global organization or the shipping industry is highly advantageous.
