Overview

This is a great opportunity to join Public Health at Tameside MBC. Tameside is one of the ten boroughs in Greater Manchester, located a short journey from Manchester City Centre. The role works with partners across Greater Manchester to lead GM-wide programmes, including the Live Well programme.

Role and Leadership

The role provides strategic leadership within Public Health and across the council and wider system, alongside the Director of Public Health, Assistant Director, and the existing Public Health Consultant. You will be part of the Public Health Senior Team and the Extended Leadership team of the council, working with partners to improve health outcomes identified in the Tameside Corporate Plan and Health & Wellbeing Strategy. The role reports directly to the Director of Public Health.

Responsibilities
  • Provide guidance and strategic leadership in the Public Health team and across the organisation and wider network of partners.
  • Lead on a range of agendas including health improvement (tobacco harms, unhealthy weight, and inactivity), cross-sector collaboration with the Voluntary, Community, Faith and Social Enterprise (VCFSE) sector, and healthcare public health initiatives.
  • Support neighbourhoods work and delivery of the Live Well programme, ensuring services reach residents in the right places at the right times.
  • Contribute to cross-council and multi-agency partnerships and help develop the public health function and day-to-day operational activities of the Public Health team.
  • Engage in CPD opportunities to support professional registration and explore areas such as research and health protection, including line management and educational supervision.

We are seeking a qualified public health professional with excellent problem solving, communication, political and technical skills. You should have energy and drive to reduce health inequalities in Tameside, with an interest in wider determinants of health and working with the VCFS E sector. This is a great opportunity to join our Public Health at Tameside MBC. Tameside is one of the ten boroughs in Greater Manchester and is a 10-minute train ride into Manchester City Centre. We work closely with the other nine local authorities and Public Health teams across Greater Manchester, which includes the GM Combined Authority, led by the GM Mayor Andy Burnham. There are some exciting GM-wide programmes which this role will have the direct opportunity to lead on such as the Live Well programme.

This role will provide strategic leadership both within Public Health as well as across the council and wider system, alongside the Director of Public Health, Assistant Director and the existing Public Health Consultant in the team. This role will provide strategic leadership as part of the Public Health Senior Team, and the Extended Leadership team of the council. You will work with partners to improve health outcomes across the population, as identified in the Tameside Corporate Plan and Health & Wellbeing Strategy. The role reports directly to the Director of Public Health.

About You:

We are seeking an appropriately qualified public health professional with excellent problem solving, communication, political and technical skills who has the energy and drive to make a major contribution to improving health and reducing inequalities in Tameside. A particular interest in the wider determinants of health, health improvement and working with the voluntary, community, faith and social enterprise sector would be desirable.

The role requires a cross-council as well as multiagency partnership approach, and you will be expected to have strong relationship and partnership skills. A high level of intellectual rigour, political awareness, negotiation and motivation skills and flexibility are required as well as the ability to communicate effectively within diverse settings. Tact, diplomacy, and leadership is required and an ability to understand other cultures, advise, challenge and advocate to enable effective working across organisational boundaries and influencing without direct authority.

You will play a key role in developing the public health function more widely, as well as day to day operational activities of the Public Health team. Most importantly we are looking for someone who is passionate about making a difference to the lives of the residents we serve and to strive to shift outcomes for the better so that our residents have better futures.

The Role

Person Specification Registration and qualifications
  • Registered Specialist Community Health Public Nurse (SCPHN) (1)
  • Registered Nurse or Midwife on Part 1 of the NMC register (1)
  • Evidence of post-registration development relevant to the post (1)
  • Recent Professional/clinical knowledge acquired through CPD
  • Teaching and assessing experience
  • V100/150 Prescriber
Knowledge
  • Knowledge of recent legislation impacting on Community Health Care and Health Visiting practice.
  • Displays a good clinical knowledge which is based on research evidence.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of the Early help assessment
