Our client is a pioneering agricultural research institution in Norwich, Norfolk, UK , dedicated to advancing crop science and sustainable farming practices. We are looking for a highly motivated and experienced Senior Plant Breeder to join our innovative R&D team. This role will focus on the development of new crop varieties with enhanced yield, improved nutritional content, and greater resilience to environmental stresses, including climate change and disease. You will be involved in all stages of the breeding cycle, from germplasm evaluation and crossing strategies to field trials and data analysis.
The ideal candidate will have a strong background in genetics, plant breeding methodologies, and statistics, with a proven track record of successfully developing and releasing new crop varieties. You will possess expertise in molecular breeding techniques, including marker-assisted selection (MAS) and genomic selection (GS), and be proficient in utilizing bioinformatics tools for data analysis. This role requires excellent project management skills, the ability to lead and collaborate within a multidisciplinary team, and strong communication skills to disseminate research findings to scientific communities and stakeholders. You will contribute to the strategic direction of our breeding programs, ensuring alignment with agricultural needs and market demands. Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage plant breeding programs for assigned crop species.
- Develop and implement advanced breeding strategies, including conventional and molecular techniques.
- Design and conduct field trials to evaluate germplasm and select promising breeding lines.
- Utilize marker-assisted selection (MAS) and genomic selection (GS) to accelerate breeding progress.
- Analyze phenotypic and genotypic data using statistical software and bioinformatics tools.
- Manage seed banks and maintain high-quality germplasm collections.
- Collaborate with researchers, agronomists, and commercial teams to ensure breeding objectives meet market needs.
- Supervise technicians and junior scientists involved in breeding activities.
- Publish research findings in peer-reviewed journals and present at scientific conferences.
- Contribute to grant writing and secure funding for research projects.
- PhD in Plant Breeding, Genetics, Agronomy, or a related field.
- A minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in crop breeding programs.
- Demonstrated success in developing and releasing new crop varieties.
- Expertise in quantitative genetics, experimental design, and statistical analysis.
- Proficiency in molecular breeding techniques and bioinformatics tools.
- Experience with data management and analysis software (e.g., R, SAS, JMP).
- Strong leadership, project management, and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively in both laboratory and field environments.
- Passion for sustainable agriculture and food security.
