About the Job

Public service pensions form a significant share of public spending, with liabilities of £1 tn and over 0bn spent on pensions and lump sums annually. They are also a major part of public sector remuneration, providing members with a guaranteed, price-protected income in retirement that is fully backed by the Exchequer.

In this role, you will:

  • Establish yourself as a centre of expertise in a complex and technical policy area, building an understanding of the public service pensions system and how it interacts with public spending, fiscal flows and wider public sector remuneration policy.
  • Develop strategic advice on public service pensions policy, clearly communicating the risks and trade-offs of policy issues to senior managers and Ministers.
  • Engage across Whitehall and devolved administrations to build and maintain strong relationships with a network of departmental pension leads.
  • Support the government’s defence of legal cases in a highly litigious policy area, by providing your expertise to workforce departments and working closely with the Government Legal Department.

This position has been created to boost the TUC’s policy capacity at a time of significant shifts in the UK labour market. The role will support our response to various new legislation and a rapidly changing economy.

It will suit someone who has highly developed data analysis skills, who is comfortable applying this experience to policy areas including labour markets and pensions.  

What key experience, skills, knowledge and understanding do you need?

 You will need:

  • Experience in analysis of primary and secondary data related to labour market trends and living standards
  • li>Experience initiating and carrying through quantitative research projects
