What You'll Do

The Principal Application Engineer leverages their extensive experience to deliver high-impact software solutions intuitively. They excel in troubleshooting and design, often working on complex components, and spend more time documenting than coding.

How You'll Do It

  • Create technology solutions for high-impact business priorities, analyzing, designing, coding, testing, and deploying features with high quality.
  • Be competent in multiple technical domains, including programming, security, automation, testing, and business areas, serving as a go-to person outside their immediate team.
  • Participate in strategic technology decisions, understanding their impact on Discover.
  • Identify and mitigate issues proactively, driving root cause analysis and problem solving.
  • Coach technology communities in areas such as technology domains, design thinking, agile development, security, architecture, and data engineering.
  • Design and optimize big data pipelines using Apache Spark for performance, scalability, and reliability.
  • Architect event-driven systems utilizing AWS Lambda, SQS, and other messaging technologies.

Qualifications You'll Need

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Informatics, Information Security, or Information Technology.
  • Experience in IT, Software Engineering, or related fields.
  • For roles requiring Dreyfus Rating, internal applicants only: proficiency on the Dreyfus engineering scale.

Preferred Requirements

  • Hands-on experience with AWS services like Lambda, SQS, CloudFormation/Terraform, and monitoring tools.
  • Deep understanding of big data frameworks, especially Apache Spark.
  • Experience designing scalable, fault-tolerant, cloud-native systems.
  • Advanced skills in Java and Python.

Physical and Cognitive Requirements

Depending on your specific skills and experience, you will be involved in delivery across technologies ranging from package-based products (SAP, Oracle, Salesforce, Workday), custom developed solutions, Cloud and SaaS deliveries and will be accountable for the ongoing delivery of our ADM services, including programme activities and business change streams.  As an acknowledged expert, you will be comfortable building senior stakeholder relationships, and you will find yourself working closely with clients, mentoring, and guiding them through their roles.

Your security clearance

To be successfully appointed to this role, it is a requirement to obtain Security Check (SC) clearance. 


To obtain SC clearance, the successful applicant must have resided continuously within the United Kingdom for the last 5 years, along with other criteria and requirements.

Based in newly refurbished offices in Guildford, this profitable software engineering company works with global corporations. Their software products allow users to develop sophisticated engineering models used within energy and renewables with future applications in banking and healthcare.

The software teams are highly educated (many with PhDs), and academic background is important in their technical recruitment approach.

Currently, they are looking to recruit a Software Development Engineer to join a nascent group to incorporate innovative AI / ML features into their software offerings. The focus is still on design, development and deployment of well-engineered scalable software solutions, the challenge is how to best utilise AI / ML into these software products.

Requirements:

- Strong academic background, minimally a Master’s in computer science, physics, engineering or similar, and ideally a PhD in a relevant subject area.- 

- Demonstrable experience developing desktop and web applications including production-grade software. This should include experience with software architecture and understanding how to support structured (SQL) and unstructured (RAG) data.

- Experience with Python and C++ / C# including how to integrate ML features.

The role does require relevant technical expertise, limited university / freelance projects are not sufficient.
