About the job
As a Rail Operator at South Western Railway, you will be at the heart of ensuring trains are safely and efficiently dispatched and stations are presented to the highest standards. You will provide the most up to date travel information for our customers and assist them in reaching their destinations safely and on time.
Your responsibilities will include, but are not limited to:
- You will be safely dispatching trains from the platform, ensuring all customers are clear of the train whilst observing the correct signal is showing. You will need normal colour vision for this position.
- Offering passenger assistance to those that need it, whether this be additional support with moving luggage or helping customers board and alight our trains with ramps.
- You'll keep customers updated about their journeys by making announcements and in your face-to-face interactions and importantly bring your own personality along to make it a truly personal experience for our customers.
You will need to be flexible in your approach and not afraid to get stuck in with a variety of tasks as you are responsible for your station and making sure it meets the quality and safety standards our customers expect. Whether this be cleaning toilets, checking everything is working and safe, clearing up rubbish or providing a helping hand to a customer, you are the face of SWR and can make a difference to someone's day.

You'll need to be:
- Organised, proactive and able to efficiently prioritise tasks.
- Able to cope with repetitive tasks under pressure.
- A great communicator that enjoys working with people.
- Confident and happy to approach and talk to new people.
- Passionate about doing the right thing – nothing is too much trouble.
- This is a safety critical role and you will be required to pass a medical including vision and hearing tests.
Applicants who require a visa must have 6 months remaining at the time of their appointment. Training is full time and you must be able to commit to this.
Working pattern
Our customers need us all day, every day (except Christmas day) and as part of the stations team, you'll need to able to work shifts at all times of the day and on every day of the week.
You will work an average of 37 hours per week across 4.5 days, with additional hours on a Sunday as part of a roster.
Typical Shifts:
Rostered shifts Monday – Sunday.
Rotational Early Shifts, Late Shifts and Night Shifts.
Early shift starting from: 06:00 - 14:00 and late shifts starting from: 14:00 - 22:00 and night shifts starting from: 22:00 - 06:00.

About the job:
To provide a safe environment whilst delivering excellent customer service at all times. To ensure that customers are extended a welcome to the station, kept well informed and that all areas are kept clean and well presented.
Your main responsibilities will be:
- As a Rail Operator 2 Supervisor GPR, you will provide cover for a variety of shifts as and when required. This can include covering shifts at other local stations when needed.
- Ensure your personal safety and that of others, including that of visitors and contractors, at all times
- Comply with the Rules as defined in Network Rail Group Standard, South Western Railway Employee Handbook, other regulations and Instructions, Group Standards and Legislation, undertaking periodic re-examination of competency.
- Provide a safe, courteous and helpful service at all times.
- Provide a safe, clean and well presented customer environment, ensuring that the tasks detailed in the cleaning schedules are maintained.
- Undertake emergency procedures and implement evacuation procedures when required.
- Carry out duties as directed by Duty Station Manager.
- Ensure the safe and punctual dispatch of trains and ensure that performance records are maintained. Identify and report to your Station Manager incidents of delays to services.
- Wear uniform (including name badge) and safety clothing as supplied, ensuring that your standard of appearance complies with the company standard and is high at all times.
- Maintain security of the station premises during your booked time of attendance.
- Act impartially in accordance with RSP/TSA requirements when serving customers.
- Carry out Winter Precautions as per Local Instructions.
- Additional tasks as specified by the local manager and Station Supervisor.
As a minimum, you will need to have:
- Able to travel to your location of work within 60 minutes, for all shift times.
- Good general education
- Strong customer focus
- Good interpersonal skills
- Team leadership ability
- Resilience
- Supervisory experience is desirable
- Able to distinguish colours with normal colour vision

You will be working an average of 37 hours across 5 days per week.
As this is a GPR position - you could be required to work early, lates or nights on any day of the week.
Working across the Metro Region with shifts starting as early as 0530 and finishing as late as 2400. Some nights may be required to be worked in line with business needs, with shift times 2230 to 0630 or 2130 to 0645. Sundays may be required to be worked in accordance with business needs.
Sunday turns start as early as 0600 and finish as late as 0015

To lead a team of station assistants to provide a safe environment whilst delivering excellent customer service at all times. As a Rail Operator 2 (S) GPR, you will cover a variety of shifts, sometimes at short notice.
Your main responsibilities will be:
- Lead and direct staff in the provision of a safe, courteous, helpful service at all times.
- Lead and direct staff in the provision of a safe, clean and well-presented customer environment, ensuring that the tasks detailed in the cleaning schedules are maintained.
- Undertake emergency procedures and implement evacuation procedures when required.
- When the Duty Station Manager is not in attendance, maintain signing on/off records for staff under your control, ensuring that members of staff are fit, capable and presentable (including the wearing of name badges) for the duty they are working.
Ensure that arrangements are made to cover short term and late notice absences and periods of sickness.
You will be safely dispatching trains from the platform, ensuring all customers are clear of the train whilst observing the correct signal is showing. You will need normal colour vision for this position.
