About the business division
The Water Utilities Division is Mott MacDonald’s centre of excellence for responding to the UK and Ireland's water and wastewater challenges. The work we do is at the forefront of ensuring safe water supplies for future generations, preventing urban flooding, and improving the health of our rivers and coastal environments. Our multi-disciplinary teams provide a variety of services throughout the full project life cycle, from advisory services and feasibility studies to outline and detailed design. Overview of the role

Mott MacDonald is the market leader in the UK water sector, being a key supplier to major water companies and delivering a wide variety of engineering and advisory projects in support to the challenges faced by the sector. AMP8 will see a significant increase in investment. We have now secured new AMP8 consultancy frameworks adding to our existing framework commitments, and are reinforcing our excellent technical teams in response to that with key leadership roles. We are seeking Associate Civil Engineers specialised in pipelines to lead our technical teams in the south and southwest. This a fantastic professional opportunity for driven individuals, with a strong UK water and wastewater infrastructure experience, and the ability to manage multidisciplinary teams of technical specialists in response to AMP8 challenges.

Key responsibilities and duties include:

  • Provide technical leadership across our programmes of potable water and wastewater pipelines
  • Direct, develop and supervise a team of design staff, providing technical and commercial guidance to support their development and to respond to the needs of the programme
  • Lead the delivery of wastewater and/or potable water pipeline programmes to budget, programme and quality standards, working collaboratively across disciplines to efficient delivery
  • Produce and review engineering calculations, specifications, drawings and reports, proactively managing design risk to deliver constructable solutions
  • Deliver projects in close partnership with clients and contractors
  • Represent the company in meetings, building strong relationships with our clients that will enhance our reputation and help secure further work
  • Contribute to commercial success through forecasting and risk management, and the production of bids and proposals

  • Chartered Status (CEng) with a recognised Professional Institution
  • Proven ability to lead a portfolio of technical projects, ensuring compliance with relevant quality assurance and technical standards and supporting the development of less experienced staff
  • Demonstrable technical experience in clean / potable water pipeline design and pumping stations and/or wastewater network and associated infrastructure design
  • Strong communication skills with experience in effective collaboration across internal multi-disciplinary teams with other technical disciplines including environmental specialists, geotechnical, structural, electrical and mechanical engineers
  • A drive to be abreast of professional development and knowledge of current and emerging technical solutions
  • Good understanding of designers’ responsibilities under CDM
  • Able to travel to other offices and sites, as required
  • Track record in building teams and capability of junior staff
  • Experience in preparing successfully bids and in undertaking client engagement
  • Project Management experience is not essential but previous experience or a desire to develop these skills would be beneficial

Our client, a renowned international engineering consultancy, is looking for an experienced Senior Structural Engineer to join their remote team. This is a unique opportunity to leverage your expertise in structural design and analysis for a variety of exciting projects, from high-rise buildings to complex infrastructure, all while working from home.

As a remote Senior Structural Engineer, you will be responsible for the structural design of new buildings and the assessment and strengthening of existing structures. You will collaborate virtually with a global team of engineers, architects, and project managers. Your role will involve undertaking detailed structural analysis, producing high-quality design calculations, and creating comprehensive drawings and specifications. You will ensure designs meet all relevant building codes, safety standards, and client requirements.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Lead the structural design process for diverse building and infrastructure projects.
  • Perform advanced structural analysis using state-of-the-art software (e.g., ETABS, SAP2000, STAAD.Pro).
  • Design building frames, foundations, and other structural elements using steel, concrete, and other materials.
  • Conduct site assessments and forensic investigations remotely where possible, or liaise with on-site personnel for data collection.
  • Develop detailed design drawings, calculation reports, and specifications.
  • Collaborate effectively with remote project teams, including architects, MEP engineers, and contractors.
  • Ensure designs comply with national and international building codes and standards (e.g., Eurocodes, BS standards).
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers.
  • Review design work of other team members for quality and accuracy.
  • Manage project timelines and deliverables within a remote working environment.
  • Participate in virtual design review meetings and client presentations.
  • Contribute to the development of innovative design solutions and construction methodologies.
  • Manage project documentation and communication flow effectively.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of industry best practices and technological advancements.
  • Champion technical excellence and quality assurance in all aspects of structural engineering.
The ideal candidate will possess a Master's degree in Structural Engineering or Civil Engineering, with a strong focus on structural analysis and design. A minimum of 7 years of post-graduate experience in structural engineering is required, with a proven track record on significant projects. Chartership with a recognized professional body (e.g., IStructE, ICE) is highly advantageous. Exceptional analytical skills, proficiency in structural analysis and design software, and outstanding communication abilities for remote collaboration are essential. We have an opening for a Civil Engineering Technician to join our clients lively Bristol office. From sustainable drainage solutions and infrastructure to complex highway design, their technical knowledge and experience is exceptional.

Currently made up of a team of Engineers / Technicians the team sits at over 20 and are looking to expand due to a heavy workload. They have extensive experience in supporting schemes from pre-planning and feasibility assessments to detailed design, technical approvals and construction.

What you need to succeed

  • To be able to assist engineers with CAD technical support
  • Prepare drawings with background external drawing information.
  • Carry out the design of detailed highway schemes for S38, S278 and S184 technical applications
  • Carry out the design of signage schemes
  • Produce development access layouts to support input at planning stage following Local Highway Authority, MfS and DMRB design guidance
  • Carry out the design of preliminary drainage strategies with calculations
  • To be able to produce catchment plans & calculate and draw visibility splays
