What you become part of:

Edmonton Distribution Centre is a 24/7 operation, 364 days a year. Our Automated Storage and Retrieval System (ASRS) warehouse holds over 25,000 pallets, with a typical annual throughput of two million pallets. Every 24 hours we expect to receive around 2,500 pallets from the on-site manufacturing operation, directly into the ASRS, as well as handling around 200 vehicle movements. Inbound vehicles arrive from our other factory sites, with palletised goods which must be put away promptly and safely into the ASRS and accurately recorded. At the same time, orders of full pallets will be pre-assembled into gravity racking and side-loaded on third party haulage vehicles, for dispatch to our customers and other sites across our network

What to expect:

Operational & Maintenance Support
  • Participate in and support new initiatives and improvement programmes as required.
  • Conduct root cause analysis to identify and resolve recurring issues.
  • Execute advanced preventative and breakdown maintenance to meet machine efficiency and availability targets.
  • Complete both preventative and corrective complex asset care activities according to the asset care plan, ensuring machine performance aligns with yield, availability, and quality standards.
  • Ensure effective and accurate use of the Maintenance Management System (SAP PM).

Quality, Environment, Health & Safety (QESH)
  • Perform QESH checks to ensure product and equipment compliance; escalate non-conformances promptly.
  • Comply with stock check and held stock procedures.
  • Participate in environmental and health and safety risk assessments as required.
  • Follow site safety best practices to maintain personal and team safety.
  • Conduct pre-use inspections of machinery to ensure safe operation.
  • Ensure personal hygiene standards meet food industry requirements.
  • Segregate recyclable waste material appropriately in your work area.

Site Standards and Best Practices
  • Adhere to and promote zero-accident tolerance culture.
  • Share and implement best practices with team members to enhance quality, safety, and environmental performance.
  • Support utilities and facilities functions when needed.
  • Ensure company and legal compliance across product, quality, safety, environment, and personnel standards.
  • Maintain site facilities in line with company standards and support job orders to ensure audit readiness.

Communication & Teamwork
  • Conduct effective handovers at shift changes, covering all safety, technical, and quality issues.
  • Participate in and support the delivery of pre-shift team briefings to enhance communication and operational alignment.
  • Mentor and support the development of apprentices and junior team members.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to manage site job orders and ensure timely resolution of issues.

General Duties
  • Perform other tasks and responsibilities as assigned to support departmental objectives and overall manufacturing output.

Skills & Essentials:
• Qualified or experience apprentice served Engineer (Essential)
• HNC mechanical engineering or above (desirable)
• BOAS qualification (desirable) (training provided)
• NEBOSH or IOSH.
• Electrical qualification (desirable)
• Previous operational experience within a large operational facility and manufacturing and distribution and volatile demand. Ideally Food factory experience
• Experience of managing external contracts and suppliers

We are currently recruiting for a multi-skilled or electrically biased  Maintenance Technicians  to the join the Engineering Team at our Portbury production facility in Bristol.  The facility is a dried blending and mixing production facility where we create flavour blends for some of the world's best loved brands, 100's of tonnes of product are precisely measured, mixed and packaged every week.

This is a permanent position, with a 3 or 4 shift pattern – AM/PM/Nights/Days


Key Responsibilities


As a Maintenance Technician you will be responsible for:
 

  • Complying with the health and safety policy and regulations. 
  • Resolving breakdowns, carryout PM’s and work on project / improvement works with a view to minimizing production downtime.
  • Carrying out risk assessments with the relevant people and put controls in place to minimise the risk to acceptable levels where reasonably practicable.
  • Lock off any dangerous machinery immediately/ or repair and notify.
  • Actively seek to undertake PMs on offline machinery where time allows.
  • Fully complete PM sheets with all observations, jobs completed and recommendations and file with the Maintenance Planner, whilst always looking at ways of improving to PMs.
  • Actively gain as much information as possible from production personnel regarding the fault on the machine to speed up the fault-finding process.
  • Ensure engineering log and computer systems are fully filled in with all relevant information including PM numbers, all used parts, plant numbers, urgency of required parts, at the end of each shift. 
  • Ensure all communications with external persons are conducted in a professional manner which reflects the company profile.

Qualifications, skills and experience


To be successful in this role we are looking for the right behaviours and competencies as well as a proven track in a similar position.  The ideal candidate will ideally have the following:
 

  • HNC, City & Guilds or time served apprentice with appropriate electrical engineering qualifications.
  • Experience within a similar role ideally gained within a food manufacturing environment, if not food, experience within any manufacturing environment is highly desirable.
  • Electrically or biased, or multi-skilled.  PLC experience highly desirable.
  • Hydraulic and Pneumatic systems experience highly desirable
  • Flexible approach with a positive 'can-do' attitude.
  • Experience of SAP highly desirable.

As a Maintenance Technician, you will work alongside the prison service, assisting our client who is responsible for the maintenance of the buildings. You will be taking care of the fire safety appliances onsite and also be a part of security team where you will escort and oversee contractors such as carpenters, plumbers and electricians, whilst they complete their maintenance work.

Duties of a Handyperson / Prison Security Escort Include (but not limited to)

  • Checking fire doors to make sure they close properly and aren't damaged.
  • Testing emergency lighting and replacing bulbs when needed.
  • Checking fire extinguishers to ensure they are in the correct place and not damaged (not servicing them, just reporting issues).
  • Keeping escape routes clear by removing obstructions and checking signage is visible.

  • Checking the identification of the contractors
  • Checking contractors have been briefed on security measures
  • Escorting contractors through the prison to their place of work
  • Overseeing contractors whilst they are working (Please note you will have to stay with the contractors at all times)
  • Checking contractor tools are all accounted for prior to leaving work area
  • Using the radio to request permission to move contractors within the prison

About You:

  • You will have good communication skills

  • Have been living in the UK for the past 3+ years
  • Be able to pass security vetting (includes providing references, passing security police checks & providing photo identification)

Role: Building Care Operative/Maintenance Technician/Handyman
Location: Banbury station - with travel to other sites as required
Contract Type: Permanent
Salary: £35,000 per annum

Purpose of the role

To provide reliable and semi-skilled handyperson services to support our Property, Assets & Facilities Management team supporting the upkeep of station assets and buildings and supporting the provision of planned and reactive non-technical maintenance in the 4 depots. This role involves carrying out a variety of repair, maintenance, and general handyman duties to ensure the stations remain safe, clean, SQR (Service Quality Regime) compliant and fully operational for passengers and staff.
 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform general maintenance tasks including minor repairs, painting, carpentry, plumbing, and general SQR and safety checks
  • li>To assist depot technical staff with 2-man jobs (Light column lowering)
  • Inspect Chiltern facilities regularly and report or resolve issues such as broken fixtures, faulty doors, lighting problems, vandalism and SQR failures
  • Maintain and repair station furniture, signage, platforms, and public areas
  • Respond promptly to maintenance requests and emergencies.
  • Support the installation of new equipment or infrastructure when required
  • Comply with health & safety policies and procedures, ensuring all work is conducted safely
  • Liaise with station management, contractors, and suppliers as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records of maintenance work performed via the Chiltern Concerto system
  • Assist with seasonal tasks such as snow clearance, gutter and ground drainage cleaning, leaf removal, and general grounds upkeep including vegetation removal

Personal Specification:

  • Previous experience as a handyman or maintenance operative, preferably in a public or transport environment
  • Basic skills in carpentry, plumbing, painting, and minor electrical repairs
  • Good understanding of health & safety regulations related to railway environments
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Strong communication skills and a customer-focused approach
  • Physically fit and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions
  • Willingness to work flexible hours, including early mornings, evenings, weekends, and public holidays
  • Full UK driving licence is essential
     

Desirable Experience:

    li>Experience working within railway or transport infrastructure.
  • Basic first aid qualification.

Interpret technical drawings, including electrical, pneumatic, and mechanical schematics

Apply automation and control knowledge to support fault finding and resolution

Complete maintenance tasks including preventative, condition-based, and corrective actions

Contribute to continuous improvement and reliability initiatives


The Person:

Completion of a recognised engineering apprenticeship

Relevant qualifications and hands-on experience in maintenance (mechanical, electrical, or both)

Ability to work across a range of systems and equipment

Strong problem-solving skills and a collaborative approach

Willingness to work on a rotating shift pattern

Additional qualifications such as HNC, IOSH/NEBOSH, or experience with continuous improvement tools are beneficial but not essential.
