Job Description
Our client, a highly regarded luxury hotel and restaurant situated in the historic city of Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, UK , is seeking an experienced and passionate Sommelier & Wine Educator to join their esteemed hospitality team. This unique role combines the expertise of wine service with the ability to educate both guests and staff, enhancing the overall dining and learning experience.
As a Sommelier, you will be responsible for developing and managing the hotel's extensive wine list, ensuring a diverse and high-quality selection that complements the culinary offerings. You will provide exceptional wine service to guests, offering personalized recommendations, decanting, and serving wines with precision and grace. This includes managing cellar inventory, procurement, and ensuring wines are stored under optimal conditions.
Beyond service, a key aspect of this role is Wine Education. You will be expected to conduct regular wine tastings and training sessions for both front-of-house staff and hotel guests. Developing engaging educational materials and presentations to deepen understanding and appreciation of different wine regions, varietals, and food pairings will be crucial. Your goal is to elevate the wine knowledge and experience for everyone connected to the establishment.
Key responsibilities include building strong relationships with wine suppliers, attending trade shows, and staying informed about emerging trends in the wine industry. You will maintain an up-to-date knowledge of vintages, producers, and pricing. The role also involves advising on beverage pairings for special events and banquets. Ensuring compliance with all licensing laws and responsible service of alcohol practices is paramount. You will contribute to creating a memorable and sophisticated atmosphere for guests.
The ideal candidate will possess formal wine qualifications, such as WSET Level 3 or higher, CMS Certified Sommelier, or equivalent. Proven experience as a Sommelier in a high-end restaurant or hotel setting is essential. Exceptional knowledge of global wines, spirits, and other beverages is required. Strong presentation and communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex wine information clearly and engagingly, are vital. You should have excellent customer service skills and a genuine passion for hospitality and education. The ability to work collaboratively with the F&B management team and kitchen brigade is important. Flexibility with working hours, including evenings, weekends, and public holidays, is necessary. A proactive approach to learning and professional development within the wine and hospitality industry is highly valued.
This is a fantastic opportunity to immerse yourself in the world of fine wine, share your passion with others, and contribute to the reputation of one of Cambridge's finest establishments.
