About the role
We are seeking a motivated Research Assistant or Research Associate to join an EPSRC-funded project investigating the micro-mechanisms of thermal fatigue in high-temperature nickel-based alloys and/or other precipitate-strengthened alloys used in aerospace and nuclear applications.
Working with Dr Christos Skamniotis and collaborators at the University of Twente, the University of Leicester, Rolls-Royce plc and UKAEA, you will develop advanced computational Multiphysics models to study the behaviour and interactions of crystallographic dislocations under extreme thermal and mechanical loads experienced in real service environments. The project combines cutting-edge Discrete Dislocation Plasticity (DDP) modelling complemented by Crystal Plasticity Finite Element (CPFE) modelling to address fundamental questions related to fatigue damage and material performance.
You will contribute to the development of in-house MATLAB and C++ modelling tools, collaborate with leading academic and industrial partners, and help advance research supporting the design of next-generation materials for demanding engineering environments.
What you would be doing
- You will develop in-depth understanding of dislocation structure evolution within the microstructure of precipitate-strengthened alloys, under thermal-mechanical load cycling.
- You will develop state-of-the-art 2D Discrete Dislocation Plasticity (DDP) code and leverage existing Crystal Plasticity Finite Element (CPFE) code via collaboration with world-leading experts in Dislocation Plasticity, Diffusion Kinetics, and Computing.
- You will produce high-quality publications in prestigious journals.
- You will present findings to industrial partners and attend regular meetings with academic/industrial project partners at Imperial, Oxford and Loughborough.
- You will co-supervise PhD students working on this project and relevant projects within Dr Skamniotis' group.
- You will promote the reputation of the Group, the Department and the College.
What we are looking for
- You must hold a PhD (or near completion) in Mechanical Engineering/Materials Engineering/Materials Science/Physics, or a related discipline; candidates without a PhD will be considered for Research Assistant.

About the role
Do you want to transform the way we diagnose lower respiratory tract infections?
As a Clinical Research Fellow in Paediatric Infectious Disease Diagnostics, you will be at the centre of a multi-disciplinary team developing a host blood gene expression test to diagnose the cause of lower respiratory tract infection in children at the point-of-care. You will work with academic and commercial sector partners to establish proof-of-concept and initial use cases for a transformative test which could improve care of millions of children and tackle a major driver of antimicrobial resistance.
What you would be doing
You will:
- Design and assist with undertaking a sub-study to assess diagnostic performance of the new diagnostic test in carefully selected samples from an existing biobank.
- Identify and explore potential use cases for blood-based testing at the point-of-care for diagnosis of LRTI in both high and low resource settings, including investigation of clinical utility, analysis of design features (including pricing), and analysis of clinical guidelines and regulatory pathways.
- Plan and lead these aspects within a high-quality programme of research.
- Contribute to project management, and work closely with multi-disciplinary teams.
- You will be expected to submit publications to refereed journals and to contribute to applications for external research funding.

Imperial Patient Experience Research Centre (PERC) provides academic leadership and practical infrastructure for participatory aspects of translational research. Established in 2011 by Helen Ward (Clinical Professor of Public Health) and Sophie Day (Visiting Professor of Anthropology), it has delivered high quality research on the impact of translational research on patients and communities using participatory methods. It has an excellent reputation in the UK and internationally, and plays a key role in advising and supporting researchers across the Faculty of Medicine on research methods (mixed method, qualitative and participatory approaches in health research), and provides strategic leadership, training and infrastructure for patient and public involvement and engagement (PPIE) across the Faculty of Medicine, the BRC, and the Academic Health Science Centre. This includes recruiting and supporting a large network of public and community partners, providing resources and training for researchers and public partners, sharing good practice, and conducting outreach to engage local communities and build trust in Imperial's research. - Experience documenting processes and producing artefacts that support decisionmaking.
- A collaborative, adaptable approach - comfortable working in a changing environment and delivering to tight timelines.
- Commitment to inclusive practice and clear, accessible communication.
