Job Description
The UCL Division of Surgery and Interventional Science is a collaborative and cross-disciplinary environment where clinicians, engineers, allied health professionals and researchers are constantly striving for innovative approaches to treatment.
As a world leader in medical and biomedical research we are able to see at first-hand the directions in which medicine and science are moving and where patient and industry needs are growing. This knowledge ensures that we are producing and teaching some of the most innovative courses for clinicians and scientists across the world. Additionally, our cutting-edge research expertise ensures that the latest techniques are taught using the most advanced equipment. Finally, we offer innovative courses led by world leading experts, providing a truly research-based learning experience delivered by some of the greatest minds in science and medicine today.
The Division reaching across three London campuses (Bloomsbury, Royal Free and Stanmore) brings together three major research departments; Tissue and Energy, Nanotechnology and Materials and Tissue. Within these departments are world class research centres, specialising in many different surgical and interventional specialties.
About the roleThe Prostate Cancer Unit at UCL has carried out unprecedented work over the years, transforming our understanding of this disease and the global approaches to diagnosing and treating it. Founded by Professor Mark Emberton, UCL prostate cancer researchers discovered the benefits of using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scanners for prostate cancer diagnosis. Proved to be efficient and non-invasive, this discovery has doubled the accuracy of prostate cancer diagnosis, allowing thousands of men a year to avoid an unnecessary biopsy. Few institutions have the expertise, history of success and specialist infrastructure to carry out the pioneering research and clinical trials needed to drive forward research in prostate cancer today. At UCL we are world leader in prostate MRI and two key studies of the last 10 years (PROMIS, PRECISION and PRIME trials) have been successfully led by our group of researchers and clinicians.
This job is ideal for a pre-CCT doctor in training or returning to training after the research post. Post-CCT doctors are welcome to apply but it would be funded pro rata as per their consultant salary scale and be dependent on undertaking joint employment as per the Follett principles.

Job Description
Overview
Research Fellow in Biological Physics – We are currently seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral Research Fellow to join the University of Surrey and work in Dr Isabella Guido's research group for a 2.5-year project funded by the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC).
The project aims to investigate how physical forces and collective dynamics lead to deformation and shape changes of biological systems by using biomimetic networks of reconstituted microtubules and motor proteins. These active networks will be designed to mimic the dynamic behaviour of the cellular cytoskeleton and provide a unique model system to explore how active stresses generated by microtubules and motor proteins at the nanoscale scale up and are collectively transmitted to the mesoscale. By encapsulating the active networks in cell-like compartments, this system will enable us to investigate the mechanical principles underlying symmetry breaking and morphological changes in cells. The interdisciplinary project involves experimental work spanning active matter physics, membrane biophysics, and microfluidics.
The successful candidate will work closely with Dr. Isabella Guido and academic collaborators from Paris-Saclay University, and Kyoto University. The candidate will develop and apply experimental and imaging techniques to characterise the pattern formation and mechanical deformation of the reconstituted active networks within confined, cell-like environments.
The post is ideally suited to a candidate with a strong interest in experimental biological physics, reconstitution of life-like systems made of biopolymers, and microfluidic technologies.
Responsibilities- Develop and apply experimental and imaging techniques to characterise pattern formation and mechanical deformation of reconstituted active networks within confined, cell-like environments.
- Collaborate with Dr. Isabella Guido and academic partners from Paris-Saclay University and Kyoto University.
- Design and perform experiments across active matter physics, membrane biophysics, and microfluidics to address project aims.
- Strong interest in experimental biological physics, reconstitution of life-like systems made of biopolymers, and microfluidic technologies.
- Experience in experimental methods, imaging, and data analysis related to active networks or cytoskeletal systems is desirable.
- Ability to work in an interdisciplinary environment and collaborate with international partners.
In addition to salary, you will receive a generous annual leave entitlement of 25 days holiday plus 7 university closure days and 8 bank holidays, a generous pension, access to world-class leisure facilities on campus, a range of travel schemes, and supportive family friendly benefits including an excellent on-site nursery.
Further InformationTo apply please upload your CV and a cover letter (2 pages maximum) via the University website. You will also be asked to address some brief questions to help us assess your suitability for the position.
For more information, please contact Dr Isabella Guido ( ).
Interviews will be held 28/11/25.
The University of Surrey is committed to providing an inclusive environment that offers equal opportunities for all. We value everyone in our community and are seeking to increase the diversity. Therefore, we particularly encourage applications from under-represented groups, such as people from Black, Asian and minority ethnic groups and people with disabilities.
