Balfour Beatty is seeking a dynamic Senior Engineer to contribute to the Net Zero Teesside project based at our new site in Redcar and Cleveland.
What you'll be doing
As a Senior Engineer , you will be responsible for the following:-
- Supporting the Engineering Manager and Pre-Construction Managers to provide input to the overall design strategy and workload management;
- Supporting the delivery teams, verifying the work of others in a timely and efficient manner, and providing expert technical support;
- Providing integration planning of Methods, Permanent and Temporary works with multi disciplinary project delivery teams;
- Ensuring design risks are considered and prepare design risk assessments. Communicate residual design risks to others;
- Leading design assurance on projects through conducting regular review meetings with project teams, identifying best practice, areas for improvement and areas of concern;
- Developing and maintain relationships with relevant technical consultants and suppliers;
- Promoting the development of BIM within the design process;
- Supporting the Engineering Manager, in ensuring that learning and best practice is shared across the business stream and the business as a whole;
- Maintaining personal expertise and knowledge to ensure than Project Engineering is at the forefront of the industry both technically and in using the latest technologies and standards;
- Carrying out technical audits in the office and site and ensure all actions are closed out;
- Conform to designer obligations of the Construction (Design and Management) regulations.
Who we're looking for
The successful candidate in this role will:
- have a recognised professional qualification (MICE or MIStructE) and a valid CSCS card;
- have extensive up to date technical knowledge of temporary works design and ground engineering and industry best practice;
- be both focussed and thorough and have the gravitas and professional credibility to advise senior management when something needs immediate redress together with the tenacity and drive to ensure that the necessary action is taken;
- be a subject matter expert with a good understanding in other areas in the engineering field;
- hold a good working knowledge of mechanical, structural and geotechnical engineering and related software packages and BIM is required;
- have strong interpersonal and communication skills, coupled with an ability to form effective relationships with partners and delivery team members under time pressure;
- be customer centric and flexible in approach, with the strategic and creative insight to understand the range of opportunities in invitations to tender and be willing to challenge the norm;
- know ‘what good looks like’ in submissions and have hands on experience of leading technical aspects in a timely manner;
- have a desire to continuously pursue innovation and development, with a focus on the customer requirements.

What you'll be doing
The successful candidate will have the following accountabilities:
- Supervise and mentor junior surveyors;
- Ensure the security, integrity, and sufficiency of survey equipment;
- Input into survey material and equipment costing and procurement;
- Collect survey field data, process, and issue deliverables in agreed formats;
- Ensure site-specific tolerances are achieved for all survey operations;
- Ensure secure storage and management of historical survey data;
- Carry out QA on design deliverables prior to construction release;
- Provide site engineers with information derived from design deliverables (schedules, digital models, drawings);
- Undertake independent survey checks at key construction stages;
- Produce as-built drawings and records in survey-specific software;

Who we're looking for
The following experience/qualifications are essential: -
- Previous experience in surveying, with exposure to civil engineering projects;
- Proficient in IT applications and survey-specific software (e.g. 3DR, N4CE, Infinity, SiteScan);
- Knowledge of settlement monitoring systems, methods, and technologies;
- Understanding of geodetic requirements associated with project delivery;
- Familiarity with latest survey equipment, GNSS networks, and emerging technologies;
- Effective communication, negotiation, and team-building skills;
- Proven ability to meet deadlines and deliver outputs to programme;
- Strong focus on Health & Safety.
The following experience/qualifications are desirable but not essential: -
- Membership of a relevant professional body and/or professional qualification, ideally RICS or CICES;

Health Safety & Environmental
• Produces Method Statements and Risk Assessments;
• Prepares and raises Temporary Works Briefs;
• Carries out ‘short term’, Visitors Induction;
• Completes Accident Book and associated reports as required;
• Actively participates in Safety Drives on the scheme;
• Understands and uses the Observation tool for both areas of improvement and areas of excellence.
Productivity
• Assists in the production of a weekly programme and measures progress against KPI’s;
• Communicates weekly programme and targets to the workforce;
• Creates and maintains daily diary for upload to BIM 360;
• Drives output in a safe manner and identifies waste streams to ensure optimum performance.
Commercial
• Collates Weekly Measure information and monitors wastage against budget allowances / KPI’s;
• Carries out a labour and plant reconciliation;
• Identifies items of additional work and raises the necessary notifications;
• Works to specific terms, conditions and outputs of relevant subcontractors and suppliers.
Who we're looking for
The following experience/qualifications are required:
- Ability to carry out complex setting out;
- Understands and has experience of producing ACP;
- Understanding of construction tolerances;
- Awareness of Specification and other contract documents;
- Understanding of permit system and actively raises permits to work;
- Able to identify potential hazards and is proactive in implementing actions and controls;
- Understands and can use the information provided in the 3-week stage programme;
- Good understanding of key contract documentation;
- Understands specific terms, conditions and outputs of relevant subcontractors and suppliers.

As a result, alongside several consortium partners; Balfour Beatty have been selected by bp (British Petroleum) to construct a first-of-a-kind fully integrated gas-fired power station with carbon capture and storage which is a key driving force behind plans to make Teesside the UK’s first decarbonised industrial cluster.
Balfour Beatty is seeking a dynamic Underground Networks Civil Engineer to contribute to the Net Zero Teesside (NZT) project based at our site in Redcar and Cleveland.
What you'll be doing
The successful candidate will have the following accountabilities:
- Support the senior project team in the overall implementation of the engineering strategy and framework for the designated project;
- Manage materials, plant and labour within the allocated budget and resources, ensuring their safe, effective and efficient delivery of service on the project;
- Ensure all systems, design information, procedures and quality systems are effectively communicated;
- Support the project delivery teams, verifying the work of others, providing technical support;
- Lead or support assurance on projects through conducting audits and regular meetings with project teams, identifying best practice, areas for improvement and areas of concern, including matters relating to safety, finance or quality;
- Develop and maintain relationships with relevant customers including technical consultants and suppliers, managing their input in the design, development, pricing and delivery of technical solutions on site;
- Maintain personal expertise and knowledge to ensure that the company is at the forefront of the industry both technically and in using the latest technologies and standards;
- Provide coaching and motivation to the project team, to deliver high performance on the project and create a culture of continuous improvement;
- Ensure that the engineering is efficiently managed so that it is fit for purpose from conception right through installation and maintenance; recognising site conditions and constraints and taking into account CDM, other statutory regulations and customer requirements;
- By using the principles of quality assurance, and where appropriate technical Integrity, ensure the customer requirements are clearly understood and that Quality Control mechanisms are in place that provide assurance that the asset and/or service delivers as designed/required;
- Contribute to the accurate and efficient provision of progress and productivity reports weekly and monthly to senior management, in accordance with company procedures;
- Seek to understand and implement the appropriate digital tool sets to support the project execution.
Who we're looking for
The successful candidate will have the following personal qualities and experience:
- Previous engineering experience and a subject matter expert in the discipline of engineering discipline are required;
- Up-to-date relevant knowledge of engineering and of industry best practice, appropriate to the relevant discipline, is required;
- A degree in a relevant engineering discipline and a relevant professional qualification, such as MICE or MIStructE, or having an ONC/HNC is desirable;
- A valid CSCS card is required;
- Focused and thorough with the appropriate skills to advise senior management when something needs immediate redress together with the tenacity and drive to ensure that the necessary action is taken;
- Previous management experience within the construction or relevant support services industries, together with a strong understanding of technical issues and trends in the relevant sectors, including specialist markets is required;
- Good interpersonal and communication skills are required, coupled with an ability to form effective relationships with partners and delivery team members under time pressure, and a customer centric, flexible approach;
- A desire to continuously pursue innovation and development, with a focus on engineering excellence, the customer and the business is required;
- An understanding of BIM and how to read and assemble BIM models and produce appropriate reports from them is desirable;
- Previous experience in underground utilities, drainage and earthworks.
