What's the role?
As a Controls Engineer at Gatwick Airport, your primary responsibility is to ensure the safe, resilient, and high-performing operation of the airport's Baggage Handling and Control Systems (BHCS). This involves the design, maintenance, and continuous improvement of automated systems that manage the flow of passenger baggage from check-in to aircraft loading and from aircraft unloading to baggage reclaim.
What you'll be doing
- Undertake and support technician teams in performance improvement activities across all systems to deliver better availability
- Produce effective communication and reports to stakeholders, such as Gal teams & third-party contractors.
- Lead and give advice to others on root cause investigations associated with Baggage systems and IT related elements.
- Prepare and review technical documentation in accordance with company procedures, to ensure compliance to safety standards.
- Deliver 2nd line Baggage control support to shift teams 24/7 365 to enable safe, resilient and high performing systems
Do you have what we're looking for?
- Proven track record of working in Baggage operation, having strong technical ability and able to make decisions under pressure
- Experience of working with technician team to deliver system improvements
- Lead in preparation of technical proposals for upcoming projects
- Ability to manage contractors and other technical resource to maintain baggage operation
- Ability to undertake PLC code changes
- Stakeholder management skills to translate technical works to various business partners
- Knowledge of various technologies such as Siemens S5,S7,Asi,Profinet
- Wider knowledge of IT infrastructure and configurations

- Education: Degree or equivalent qualification in construction management or an engineering-related discipline. Chartered Membership of a recognised Engineering Institution is highly desirable.
- Experience: At least ten years of experience as a Construction Manager/Senior Field Engineer or equivalent on complex multi-disciplinary infrastructure projects or multi-year engineering programmes, typically valued over £50m.
- Project Management: Experience managing multiple, concurrent projects with interfacing tasks is highly desirable.
- Construction Knowledge: Comprehensive understanding of construction execution, techniques, methodology, and constructability issues related to complex infrastructure or asset improvement projects.
- Quality Management: Experience in quality management for multi-discipline infrastructure or asset improvement projects.
- Health and Safety: Excellent understanding of Health, Safety, and Environmental issues in the construction industry, with experience addressing these issues highly desirable.
- Project Close-Out: Knowledge of controlling and managing project close-out and handover processes, including understanding Building Control requirements.
- Operational Environment: Experience managing construction projects in a live operational environment, including coordinating with multiple stakeholders and negotiating access and possession windows, is highly desirable.

More about your role
This role oversees the planning, supervision, and delivery of maintenance and refurbishment works on domestic and commercial properties. You manage contractor teams, ensure quality and compliance, control budgets and schedules, and maintain strong customer service with continuous improvement. You also handle contract documentation, inspections, and provide technical advice while supporting the team's development and contributing to asset management.
Covering the South East region , you will be responsible for the effective and efficient delivery of the groups repairs, maintenance and capital component upgrade work. You will take an active role around responsibility with CDM and H&S Management.
You will oversee contractor performance, ensuring all terms, SLAs, and KPIs are met while preparing and managing contract documentation. You'll control work programs and budgets, monitor site progress, and ensure compliance with regulations. Managing inspections, maintaining quality standards, and keeping accurate records will be key. You'll also provide technical advice on building maintenance and actively contribute to asset management discussions to drive continuous improvement.

- Proven experience delivering customer-focused services with a focus on continuous improvement.
- Extensive experience coordinating and supervising work on both domestic and commercial properties.
- Strong background in managing contractor to ensure service delivery, handle change, and support team development.
- A driving license and access to your own vehicle is mandatory for this role.

You've successfully arranged and supervised work on domestic and commercial properties and led contractor teams to ensure quality, manage change, and support development. You're skilled at prioritising tasks to meet targets, budgets, and deadlines. Ideally you hold (or are working toward) relevant qualifications such as an HNC or professional certifications, with the technical competence to commission and sign off work but hands on experience in project management is essential. Preferred skills include health and safety certifications like IOSH or NEBOSH, a solid understanding of value-for-money principles, and strong communication skills across all levels.
