About the division
The Water Consultancy Division is Mott MacDonald's centre of excellence for responding to water and wastewater challenges, offering fantastic opportunities to get involved in diverse and technically challenging work. The work we do is at the forefront of ensuring safe water supplies for future generations and protecting our environment. Our multi-disciplinary teams provide a variety of services throughout the full project life cycle, from advisory services and feasibility studies, through outline and detailed design, to construction support and site supervision.
Overview of the role
We are seeking a Principal Civil Engineer with a strong background in delivering major infrastructure projects, detailed design, and working collaboratively with clients and contractors. A pragmatic approach to problem-solving and decision-making is essential for the role. You will join our Dams and Reservoirs team, contributing to the delivery of high-profile projects across the UK and internationally. This role offers the opportunity to lead multidisciplinary design teams, engage directly with clients and contractors, and shape the future of water infrastructure.
Key responsibilities and duties include:
- Leading the detailed design of complex civil engineering works, ensuring technical excellence and compliance with industry standards, harnessing our existing expertise in geotechnical engineering, hydraulic structures, risk assessment and collaborating with our specialists in hydrology, hydropower, water transfers, environment, planning and beyond
- Delivering robust and buildable solutions considering practical constraints and opportunities
- Collaborating closely with contractors to develop buildable, cost-effective solutions within design and build frameworks
- Managing project deliverables, timelines, and quality assurance processes
- Preparing feasibility studies, calculations, specifications, drawings, and schedules
- Supporting site supervision and construction phases, resolving technical challenges as they arise
- Representing Mott MacDonald in client and stakeholder meetings, building strong relationships to support business growth
- Mentoring junior engineers and contributing to technical development across the team
- Promoting a strong health and safety culture and driving continuous improvement in project delivery

Candidate specification
Essential:
- Proven track record of experience in dams, reservoirs, hydropower, hydraulic structures and/or river engineering
- Experience in design and delivery of major infrastructure projects in the water engineering sector
Ability and enthusiasm to provide supervision to engineers, technicians and apprentices - Excellent communication and collaboration skills
- Experience of managing multidisciplinary teams and complex projects
Desirable:
- Chartered / Incorporated civil engineer with a relevant professional institution
- Experience of managing clients and other project stakeholders
- Appointed to the Supervising or All Reservoir Panel under the Reservoirs Act
- Experience in BIM and collaborative environments, e.g. Civil 3D, BIM360, including supervising the work of others

The Opportunity
We have an opportunity for a Principal Mechanical Engineer who is looking to rise to the challenge of acting as a technical discipline lead in the data centre sector and becoming a permanent member of our friendly, supportive and creative Building Engineering Team.
As an integral member of our multi-disciplinary engineering team, you will be responsible for the mechanical design packages and overall mechanical discipline and will be expected to take them from initial brief through scheme & detail design to installation and commissioning support. This role will harness your core data centre skills and experience to provide technical guidance on discipline-specific data centre projects, as well as mentoring and developing junior colleagues.

- Leading projects and working closely with our data centre clients to deliver quality work to meet their specific needs
- Presenting technical material for review by technical and non-technical audiences.
- Contributing to conceptual design studies and reports for your discipline and package
- Enthusiastically developing and mentoring junior team members in their career development, including technical and soft skills

- Degree qualified in Mechanical or Building Services Engineering ( preferably to Masters level) with Chartership status ( CIBSE / IMechE)
- An accomplished engineer who is interested in further developing their design and project management skills on fast-paced, highly technical projects, working collaboratively to lead multi-disciplinary design teams, and who seeks to take responsibility for managing projects from inception to completion to achieve outstanding results.
- Experienced in data centre & other mission critical systems and facilities.
- Have demonstrable experience of successfully leading complex mechanical engineering projects with a strong ability to communicate with the team and clients through sketching, drawing and writing
- Competent in designing software packages

The Senior Mechanical Engineer will lead and support mid-large projects from concept to handover. The successful candidate will have proven design experience and deliver on quality, time, and budget. The successful candidate will ideally be chartered or working towards chartered status.

- To have a passion and have a drive for helping clients solve their building services challenges
- Be a team player, ready to engage across disciplines and work together
- Have good communication skills
- Experience in Building Services design, including developing detailed design drawings and calculations, specification writing, and compiling technical schedules.
- A track record of having worked on Building Services designs across a number of sectors, for example, Education, Science, Healthcare, etc
- Experience of seeing conceptual designs through to completion and dealing directly with clients.
- A track record of having delivered low-energy, sustainable designs.
- Experience in working knowledge of REVIT / CAD is preferred
Preferred Qualifications
- Ideally, a relevant mechanical, electrical, or building services degree, or a relevant discipline and sufficient industry experience to allow Chartered progression
- Chartered or with qualifications to become chartered.
- Any Nuclear or equivalent experience in nuclear/marine systems would be beneficial but not essential

We are looking for Senior Solar Design Engineers with varying areas of expertise / experience to join our rapidly expanding renewable energy team. Overview of the role
We are seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Civil Engineer to join our Dams and Reservoirs team.
Mott MacDonald is a market leader in the UK water sector, being a key supplier to major water companies and delivering a wide variety of engineering and advisory projects in support to the challenges faced by the sector.
Our Dams and Reservoirs team has ambitious growth plans in three key areas:
- Meeting upcoming investment needs through our existing and new frameworks with major UK water companies, reservoir owners and the Environment Agency

Qualifications
Here’s what we’re looking for:
- Demonstratable experience in planning and delivery of ecological services on projects in the UK or Ireland.
- Well-developed understanding of relevant wildlife legislation.
- Ideally experience on DCO schemes, including experience at examination.
- Membership of an appropriate professional institution and evidence of working towards Chartership (such as CIEEM or related).
- Commitment to innovation and continuing professional development.
- A proactive approach to Health and Safety.
- Mentoring and supporting ecology team members.

We are currently recruiting for a Senior Electrical Engineer to join our expanding Building Services team in Scotland.
Our Scotland MEP team works closely with our other multidisciplinary teams with over 600 staff covering Building (MEP, Civil, and Structural) Engineering, Project Management, Quantity Surveying, Transportation, Water, Energy, and environmental consultancy. Our Building Services sector coverage is broad, including Defence, Healthcare, Education, Science, Industrial, and Client Advisory,
What you’ll do!
The Senior Electrical Engineer will lead and support mid-large projects from concept to handover. The successful candidate will have proven design experience and deliver on quality, time, and budget. This role will suit someone with a mechanical engineering/building services degree who is enthusiastic, self-motivated, and looking to advance their career. The successful candidate will ideally be chartered or working towards chartered status.
Responsibilities:
- Prepare specifications, schedules, drawings, and other contract documents through the RIBA/project stages.
- Manage the mechanical design delivery of projects from concept through to completion.
- Attend project and Client meetings on behalf of AECOM.
- Prepare planning, design, and feasibility reports.
- Ensure that project work complies with the Project Management Plan and Programme.

Qualifications

Requirements:
- To have a passion and have a drive for helping clients solve their building services challenges
- Be a team player, ready to engage across disciplines and work together
- Have good communication skills
- Experience in Building Services design, including developing detailed design drawings and calculations, specification writing, and compiling technical schedules.
- A track record of having worked on Building Services designs across a number of sectors, for example, Education, Science, Healthcare, etc
- Experience of seeing conceptual designs through to completion and dealing directly with clients.
- A track record of having delivered low-energy, sustainable designs.
- Experience in working knowledge of REVIT / CAD is preferred
Preferred Qualifications
- Ideally, a relevant mechanical, electrical, or building services degree, or a relevant discipline and sufficient industry experience to allow Chartered progression
- Chartered or with qualifications to become chartered.
- Any Nuclear or equivalent experience in nuclear/marine systems would be beneficial but not essential
Important Details:
- Due to the nature of the work undertaken successful applicants will need to have active UK SC Clearance or the ability to gain UK SC clearance, and ideally have single UK nationality
