About the role:
The Senior Technical Specialist – Fracturing & Stimulation is responsible for delivering engineering and operational expertise in support of well design, planning, and execution. This role ensures that all fracturing and stimulation programs align with business objectives, comply with local regulations, and conform to BP’s practices and procedures.
The Specialist is expected to take a lead technical role within functional teams and collaborate effectively with multi-functional peers across the Production and Operation Organization (P&O), Wells, Wells Solutions, Operations, Engineering, Subsurface, and Regions. Their primary focus is to ensure that fracturing and stimulation designs meet the technical and strategic goals of each project.
Key Accountabilities:
Provides senior expertise guidance to Frac & Stim design & operations per the requirements New Well Common Process.
Assures that Well Control and Process Safety risks are recognized and managed in Frac & Stim design and operations.
Assures Frac & Stim time and cost estimates to support project FM’s and well AFE’s are consistent.
Technically reviews the Frac & Stim section of the well Statement of Requirements.
Supports the development of Frac & Stim design and operational plans and documents in the Completions Design Document and associated Field Basis of Design
Assures the functional and technical specifications for tubulars, equipment and Frac & Stim completion processes to deliver the expected reliability, and rate & reserve targets.
Drives the implementation of new Frac & Stim procedures, practices, and technology.
Shares lessons with other Regions.
Reviews/benchmarks Frac & Stim execution and performance to identify areas for continuous improvement.
Provides operational support as required.
Supports the development of Frac & Stim engineers through technical coaching and supervision of engineering work.
Essential Experience and Job Requirements:
Experience in delivering Fracturing & Stimulation designs and operations for either an operator or service company on multiple well engineering project types (including frac packs, gravel packs, acid stimulation and hydraulic fracturing); expert knowledge of Frac & Stim design , planning and execution of fracturing and stimulation jobs including engineering assurance and QA/QC requirements; expert knowledge of BP’s engineering tools and principles; experienced practitioner in the well construction workflow process; experience in supporting completions operations; demonstrated ability to evaluate well performance; demonstrated safety and technical leadership of completion well activities; Assures that Well Control and Process Safety risks are recognized and managed in Frac & Stim design and operations. Supports the development of Frac & Stim design & operational plans and documents in the Completions Design Document and associated Field Basis of Designs. Delivers at pace including fracturing post job analysis of fracturing treatment and relevant close out actions (scorecards, database updates, handover meetings, annular pack interpretation etc.)
In addition to significant Fracturing & Stimulation experience the following experience is considered necessary
Educated to Bachelor of Science in an engineering or scientific discipline or higher.
Extensive years of specific Frac and Stim experience (operator or service company) – specific N.Sea, Unconventional, Europe and Middle East experience preferred.
Completions or Interventions experience, both Engineering and Operations
Independent Practitioner of standards and processes relevant to Completion Engineering.
Well Control Certification at Combined Supervisory Level from course accredited by ICWF, IADC, or ERCB (optional - required after hiring)
Proficient user of Stimplan software and fracturing pressure analysis/ interpretation.
Familiarity with subsurface (Reservoir Engineering, Geology, Geomechanics, etc.)
Previous experience with bp or other deepwater operator is a plus
Available to work offshore when required.

- To ensure client needs are met and manage any emerging changes to the basis, scope of work, time frames or budgets.
- To assist our clients in the process and energy industries in development of overall strategies to deliver and accelerate the energy transition, supported by innovation and appropriate technologies.
- To identify resource requirements and support in resource planning across a portfolio of projects as appropriate.
- To work with project controls team to provide reporting on project performance both internally and to client.
- To work with cost estimating function to develop estimates of total installed cost, understand level of uncertainty and identify project risks and opportunities
- To prepare and check key project and technical study deliverables, and ensure high levels of quality.
- To support line managers in managing performance and development of engineers and consultants in the team.
- To develop relationships with customers, supply chain and other third parties, and represent Costain in discussions and meetings on proposals, studies and projects.
- To support Business Development in winning repeat business with existing clients and identifying and winning new business from new clients
- To ensure personal and project compliance with current company policy, relevant legislation and company and customer's requirements for Quality, Health, Safety and Environmental matters and work in such a manner not to cause personal harm or injury to fellow workers, customer and subcontractor employees or the environment.
- The role is to be based in Costain's Aberdeen Office and may require travel to company, supplier or customer offices or sites for business purposes. The company operates a dynamic working policy which offers the opportunity to work by agreement with the individual considering the needs of the project, client and business.
Qualifications
- First degree in a relevant engineering discipline, preferably in Chemical Engineering, but other discipline degrees will be considered along with the relevant experience
- Chartered Engineer preferred and the candidate should have more than 10 years' experience including significant experience of UK energy infrastructure, and facilities development, preferably in an engineering consultancy or contracting environment.
- Energy industry experience in UK regulatory environment
- Wide knowledge of processes and technologies employed in energy production, processing and in decarbonisation of industry and power generation
- Ability to frame problems, identify diverse options, and prepare robust evaluations to screen and select options, understanding and accounting for appropriate selection criteria
- Ability to guide team in developing solutions and preparing deliverables
- Awareness of process safety and environmental aspects of design
- Project capital and operating cost estimating, interfacing with estimating function
- Commercial awareness, including overall project execution strategies
