Student Support Worker - Secondary School

We are delighted to be partnering with a highly regarded secondary school in Wandsworth, seeking to appoint a Student Support Worker to join their dedicated team immediately.

This is an excellent opportunity for a recent English graduate (or related subject) who is eager to gain hands-on experience in education. The successful candidate will play a key role in supporting classroom learning and delivering the school's targeted Reading Programme, designed to raise literacy levels and boost reading confidence across KS3 and KS4.

Academics Ltd are looking for someone who has experience or a strong willingness to work with children who require additional support, including those with behavioural challenges. Your role will involve providing 1:1 or small group assistance, working closely with both students and staff to create a supportive, nurturing learning environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Support children with challenging behaviour and SEND on a 1:1 basis or in small groups.
  • Implement strategies to encourage positive behaviour and foster a calm, productive classroom environment.
  • Assist with classroom activities, helping students engage with the curriculum at their own pace.
  • Help manage and de-escalate behavioural challenges in a positive and constructive way.
  • Collaborate with teachers, SENCOs, and parents to ensure the needs of each child are met.
  • Provide supervision during lessons, outdoor play, and other activities.

We are looking for a candidate who is patient, flexible, and proactive in supporting children with a range of needs, including social, emotional, and behavioural challenges. Experience in similar roles or in SEND settings is highly beneficial, but we are also open to applicants who demonstrate a genuine passion for working with children and a commitment to professional development.

The Role

We are looking to recruit a part-time Student Support Officer, as part of the Student Services team, to help manage student enquiries during weekday evenings. 

You will work alongside a fellow Student Support Officer from 4pm until 9.30pm on the Information Helpdesk within the Ravensbourne campus as well as supporting other locations in our buildings. You will be working Monday to Thursday each week and this is a 0.6 FTE role. 
Please note, the hours for this role are fixed and Ravensbourne's flexible working hours policy does not apply to this role. 

You will be the face of Student Services during evening teaching and respond to queries from students who attend the helpdesk. You will also be expected to provide administrative support to the team as well as supporting work to log student absences. 

We are looking for a professional, supportive and welcoming presence to help students working in the evening feel connected to the support and processes at Ravensbourne. 

The Candidate

The successful candidate will have a good telephone manner and written English skills. 

Experience of working in education and in customer facing roles is desirable. It is essential that you demonstrate your ability to support customer needs and communicate in an effective and clear manner.

About the role

The role of the Student Support Manager is to develop, oversee and review the provision of support for students in the faculty.  There will be a focus on individual student wellbeing cases and managing the faculty elements of formal student support processes such as Student of Concern, Support for Study and disability inclusion. The role holder will also work with others to develop and maintain a positive culture of wellbeing within the faculty, in line with the university’s commitment to the ’whole university’ approach to mental health and wellbeing.

The role holder will act as a liaison for central support services and provide expert advice to staff when students are experiencing difficulties, including signposting to specialist services and promoting awareness of these services. An important part of the role will be to ensure that wellbeing support is provided clearly and consistently for all the faculty’s students, so the role holder should feel comfortable developing and delivering training and guidance for staff to ensure they have a clear understanding of the relevant processes.

The role holder will be proactive and will have an excellent understanding of the needs of Natural, Mathematical & Engineering Sciences (NMES) students and the challenges that they face. They will be adept at planning and problem solving and able to work independently, while also forging excellent relationships with a wide number of colleagues across different teams.

This is a full-time post (35 Hours per week), and you will be offered an indefinite contract.

This is a hybrid role; a minimum of 2 days a week attendance in the office is expected.
