What you'll be doing:
Through Switch into Aerospace Engineering, you'll train and get experience as an Aerospace Fitter and a Machinist – you'll then be aligned to role to finish your training.
Forget what you think you know about 'factory' environments. At Rolls-Royce, our facilities are open and modern – spaces you'll enjoy being in every day.
- Aerospace Fitter: Learn to assemble aircraft engines using a range of tools and technical instructions. It'll be your job to make sure the components and the way they're assembled meet the high standards we demand.
- Machinist: This is precision work, making components from specialist materials using world-class machinery. Measuring and checking they're exactly right for our requirements too.
How it works:
Year one
For the first few weeks, you'll get to know Rolls-Royce and the people who'll be with you throughout your programme. This includes a mentor and your fellow 'Switchers'. From there, you'll split your time each week as follows.
- Four days a week based at our Filton site in Bristol, where you'll develop practical skills to enable you to achieve your Level 2 Diploma in Engineering Operations qualification.
- One day a week you'll be studying for your Knowledge qualification (EAL Level 2 Certificate in Engineering Operations) where you'll attend classes and develop your digital skills and Engineering knowledge.
- You will have two extended work placements on site in Bristol to give you insights into the roles available for you to choose in Year two.
- Where required, you'll start some of your days (07:45–09:15) at Weston College studying and improving your skills in Maths and/or English.
Year two
You'll be aligned to an Aerospace Fitter or Machinist apprentice role. You'll spend more time at your training provider where you'll continue to develop both your academic knowledge and practical skills.
This will be combined with spending time on site at a Rolls-Royce facility, developing your workplace skills and working on parts that go into our world-class aircraft engines. You'll get half a day each week to meet with your mentor, discuss your progress, work on personal skills and get any extra support you need to succeed.
Year three and four
You'll work four days a week on site in your role, learning on the job. One day a week will be spent at your training provider, studying the academic qualifications required for your Level 3 apprenticeship.

Dowty Propellers, part of GE Aerospace Systems based in Gloucestershire, is a leading supplier of advanced technology, composite-bladed propeller systems for a wide range of regional turboprop and military transport aircraft. Our products are used in applications that range from regional airliners and military airlifters to marine hovercraft. Operated by a highly skilled workforce, Dowty Propellers' in-house production expertise for composite blades includes application of resin transfer moulding processes, which have been continuously evolved and perfected since 1976; and the use of braiding machines that rapidly and accurately apply the blades' fibre outer layers.
**Role Summary**
Typically, a four-year programme, the **Aerospace Engineering Degree Apprenticeship** is an alternative to full-time University, allowing you to study for an Aerospace Engineering Degree part time at the University of The West of England (Bristol) while gaining industrial experience working directly at Dowty Propellers on a variety of aviation projects.
The BEng Hons degree structured programme aimed at gaining a variety of competencies required for a successful career in engineering. Supplemented by a variety of other development opportunities within the broader GE family, we believe this programme provides an excellent gateway into the wider world of advanced aerospace engineering.
**Overview of the scheme**
This is a broad-based programme offering a wide range of activities to build well rounded engineers with well-developed interpersonal and team-working skills. Delivered onsite at UWE 2 to 3 days per week and once per week in years 2-4, the programme consists of:
+ Enrolment in the BEng Hons Aerospace Engineering degree at the University of The West of England (Bristol)
+ A series of work placements within our engineering teams to gain skills and experience working on front line projects. These typically cover mechanical design, composites design, mechanical analysis, stress analysis, aero-acoustics, controls, electronics and systems engineering and manufacturing engineering
+ Support from technical and pastoral mentors from both Dowty and the university
+ Numerous opportunities to participate in enrichment activities, local school's engagement, the GE apprentice network and various external events such as the Cheltenham Science Festival, Imagineering, Go4SET, GirlsGetSET and the K'Nex Challenge
**Qualifications/Requirements**
Please ensure you have achieved or are predicted these grades or above as these are the minimum requirements to join this apprenticeship. Failure to meet these grades could mean you are not eligible to join the programme.
**Essential**
+ Minimum of 112 UCAS points via:
+ 3 A-Levels at grade BBC or above (including Mathematics and another STEM-based subject e.g., Physics/Electronics/Computing or similar)
+ BTEC Extended Diploma in Engineering at grade DMM or above
+ Equivalent qualification with appropriate Mathematics content
+ Grade C/4 or above in English and Mathematics, or equivalent (we accept Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Maths)
