The Department of Mechanical Engineering is seeking to recruit a Lecturer to undertake high-quality research and teaching. We are particularly interested in disciplinary expertise in one of the following areas:

These research areas are aligned with the Faculty of Engineering & Design Research Centres, including IAAPS, a world-leading center of excellence supporting the transport industry in the transition to net zero. Teaching will support our MEng undergraduate degree programmes, including Aerospace, Engineering, as well as new MSc programmes under development. Our degree programmes have an outstanding reputation built on industry-linked teaching, rigorous academic standards, placement-provision, and graduate employability. As well as lecturing, you will be expected to participate in supervising students undertaking significant individual and group projects encompassing research or design activities.

We are one of the leading Mechanical Engineering Departments in the UK and provide a progressive academic environment. Overview

We are seeking an experienced Aerospace Design Engineering Team Lead (ETL) to manage a high-performing design team and ensure the successful delivery of aircraft structural design projects. This role demands deep expertise in aircraft structural design, CAD modelling, and design governance, combined with strong leadership and project delivery skills.






Responsibilities

  • Lead a design engineering team delivering complex aerospace structures from concept to certification.
  • Oversee the creation of 3D CAD models, assemblies, and detailed drawings in compliance with aerospace standards.
  • Ensure adherence to design governance, configuration control, and change management processes.
  • Drive design reviews and ensure compliance with stress, systems, and manufacturing requirements.
  • Collaborate with stress engineers, systems engineers, and manufacturing teams to deliver optimized designs.
  • Manage workload allocation, project schedules, and resource planning across the team.
  • Act as the primary client interface for design-related technical discussions.
  • Drive the team to deliver to schedule and quality





Qualifications

  • Degree in Aerospace, Mechanical, or Structural Engineering (or equivalent).





Essential skills

  • Strong leadership and team management capability.
  • Knowledge of door design is an advantage.
  • Advanced proficiency in CATIA V5 and aerospace design methodologies.
  • Knowledge of aerospace structural design principles, including metallic and composite structures.
  • Excellent understanding of GD&T, drawing standards (ASME/ISO), and PLM systems.
  • Ability to interpret and apply certification standards.
  • Good Communication.
  • Knowledge of aerospace or previous experience.





Desired skills

  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and DFM principles.
  • Familiarity with change management





Experience

  • Experience with working with stakeholders, lead engineers, chief engineers and project managers.
  • Experience in aerospace structural design engineering, with leading teams or projects.
  • Demonstrable experience in concept design, detail design, and production release.
  • Experience working with OEMs or Tier 1 suppliers on major aircraft programs.
  • Experience with composite structure design and assembly integration.
