As part of the Mechanical Engineering team based in Stafford you will report to the Mechanical Engineering Team Leader within the HVDC Valve Converter Engineering function.
As the successful candidate, you will be part of a highly motivated, and dynamic team of engineers working on the development and deployment of existing and new power electronics applications for power systems, particularly for HVDC converters and the forthcoming "HVDC Grid".
This is a very exciting and dynamic field of power engineering in which GEV's leading contribution has worldwide recognition. HVDC Valves Converter are large and complex structures, with typical dimensions of several metres in each direction and weighing many tens of tonnes. The design and the development of such converters is technically challenging and involves a variety of engineering disciplines, contribution through teamwork and an innovative approach.

**Job Description**
Responsibilities:
+ Mechanical development and analysis of power electronic converter valves for HVDC & FACTs.
+ Perform mechanical engineering calculations and simulations, with a focus on stress analysis of solids.
+ Application of specifications into key components such as structural steel and composites, cooling systems, corona shields & insulators to capture and translate design intent to stakeholders.
+ Impacts quality of own work and the work of others on the team.
+ Executes standard operational / technical tasks typically subject to instructions and work routines.
+ There is latitude to rearrange the sequence to complete task / duties based on changing work situations.
+ Support industrialisation, site works and commissioning.

**The Person**
+ Requires mechanical engineering expertise at graduate level or equivalent experience, with a good level of the technical understanding of general mechanical engineering.
+ Educated to degree-level, or above, in a discipline such as mechanical engineering or science. Applicants may have some career experience in mechanical engineering.
+ Ability to demonstrate an ability to think innovatively and apply engineering knowledge.
+ An enquiring mind and desire to learn new skills, an ability to apply different engineering methods and a willingness to share knowledge are essential qualities.
**Skills and Experience:**
+ Good understanding of the application of mechanical engineering principles such as stress analysis and calculations.
+ Familiarity with the application of FEA tools, such as Creo Simulate or Ansys.
+ Proficient with 3D CAD tools, preferably Creo 4.0 or over and Windchill PDMlink.
+ Aware of mechanical design to external standards (e.g. BSI, ISO, IEC, EN.).
+ Aware of industrialisation constraints.
+ Familiar with detail manufacturing drawings and drawings templates.
+ Aware of requirements capture principles.
+ Competent specification & report writing such as technical notes.

The Heathrow Modernisation Programme is underway, with a minimum 0bn spend to increase capacity by 20 million passengers. We are partnered with one of the UK’s biggest construction firms, who will be self-delivering the elements of the MEP services.

They expect no less than 10 years work on site and are strengthening their core MEP team with the addition of MEP Project Engineers and MEP Project Managers

The most pressing need is for an experienced Mechanical Engineering Manager. This person would report directly to the MEP Project Director and lead the mechanical packages on multiple projects. The role is essentially a lead mechanical engineer or project manager from a mechanical project engineering background.

You will:

• Lead the production of PPC & Road Maps
• Input into weekly dependency schedule production to progress works in line with programme.
• Drive and record the weekly look ahead plan for resource and progress.
• Leads within the weekly programme co-ordination / look ahead meeting with detailed understanding of dependencies, problems posed and available resolutions.
• Management and sequencing of supply chain and internal resource in line with programme requirements.
• Co-ordinates the management of the auditing of supply chain works onsite in line with approved RAMS.
