We are seeking a motivated, industry-experienced Lecturer in Animal Welfare & Management to deliver high-quality teaching to FE and HE students. There are two permanent positions: one full time, one three days per week. The successful candidates will teach a range of animal management programmes, including practical husbandry, welfare theory, and work with small mammals, exotics and large animals.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
  • Deliver theory and practical teaching across FE and HE levels in animal welfare and management
  • Design, plan and assess curriculum, assignments, workshops and practicals
  • Supervise hands-on animal husbandry activities across species (small mammals, exotics, large animals)
  • Act as tutor/course/learner group manager for assigned cohorts
  • Contribute to department and curriculum development to respond to employer and industry needs
  • Maintain excellent standards of welfare and safety in animal care and practical facilities

Who are we looking for?
Essential:
  • A BSc degree or equivalent in Animal Science, Zoology, Animal Studies or related subject
  • Broad industry experience working with a wide range of animals, including:
     • small mammals
     • exotics (reptiles, amphibians, etc.)
     • large animals (farm, equines, etc.)
  • Strong husbandry experience and welfare understanding
  • Excellent subject knowledge across welfare, behaviour, biology, nutrition etc.
  • Good communication skills; ability to engage and motivate learners
Desirable:
  • Qualification in teaching and learning (e.g. Certificate or Diploma in Education, PGCE), or willingness to work towards one
  • Experience in teaching or mentoring, especially with FE and/or HE students
  • Experience of designing practical animal units or working in a zoo, exotic or farm environment
  • Experience tutoring or managing student learning groups
Additional Requirements (for Temporary / Part-Time / Short-Term Roles)
  • Enhanced DBS check (within last 12 months), including child barred list
  • Ideally registered on the DBS Update Service (but not essential)
  • Ability to teach to Level 3 minimum
