AtkinsRéalis UK Infrastructure Project Delivery Practice (PDP) is the centre of excellence for the delivery of infrastructure projects and the home unit for our project management staff. The team is responsible for delivery of design services across our Markets of Water Infrastructure, Defence Infrastructure, Buildings and Places, Energy and Aviation.

With recent project wins in the East Midlands and increased work with our Water and Defence clients, we have exciting new opportunities for Associates and Associate Directors to be based in our Derby office. As an Associate or Associate Director, you would be responsible for the delivery of major multi-disciplinary projects, owning and leading the process from concept through to construction on our expanding portfolio of the biggest and most challenging projects.

Your Purpose:
  • Taking a strategic lead role as PM or PD on large and/or complex multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Ensure successful delivery to agreed targets, identifying and agreeing project objectives and developing a strategy for achieving these.
  • Identifying and managing any matters that could pose potential contractual/commercial risks to AtkinsRéalis, as well as those of our clients and project stakeholders.
  • Leading the project team - building, motivating, maintaining, coaching, guiding and developing the team.
  • Contributing to team management, growth and development.
  • Facilitating communication, co-ordination, and information flow with the Client and within the project team, including any subcontractors and partners (internal and external).
  • Assembling and owning the project delivery programme and delivery plans. Form strong working relationships with other AtkinsRealis disciplines, external design consultants, clients and stakeholders.
  • Comparing revenue with predicted costs and identifying risk allowances, margin and provisions, including Earned Value reporting.
  • Closing out the project on completion, archiving project documentation, updating market information, ensuring that lessons learnt are captured and disseminated internally and ensuring that a Client Satisfaction survey is initiated. Support business development activities in line with our market strategies and governance.

Requirements :
  • Relevant qualification (Bachelor or Masters).
  • Chartered Engineer/Scientist/PM or equivalent with demonstrable experience managing design commissions or design and build contracts on large infrastructure projects.
  • Market sector experience across a range of Water and/or Defence infrastructure projects is an advantage.
  • Experience in deploying various forms of contract, in particular NEC3 or 4.
  • Experience of managing design projects to time, cost and quality objectives and familiar with earned value techniques.
  • Ability to lead and motivate a team and demonstrate good leadership qualities.
  • Customer focused with excellent client relationship management skills.
  • A supportive and encouraging approach to mentoring less experienced members of the team.

Role Responsibilities
  • Responsible for running of Major projects. Takes Team Management role in the development and design and coordination of engineering project services for Mechanical or Electrical installations, systems, equipment, facilities etc. (majority of building types)
  • Carries out cost and profit diagnosis on projects including feasibility studies and preparation of fee bids
  • Reviews status advised by project personnel and external parties and modifies schedules or plans as required. Prepares project reports for Management, Client or others.
  • Develops and specifies applications of controls, instruments, and operating systems for all building engineering services purposes
  • Surveys tests and reports on existing electrical/mechanical installations
  • Specifies activities to ensure that manufacturing, construction, installation, and operational testing confirm to functional specifications and customer requirements
  • Represents Company at technical meetings with customers, professional teams and contractors teams
  • Ensure engineering calculations and drawings meet required robust industry and legal standards
  • Day to day decision making on project progress and direct liaison with, and provides advice to client
  • Ensures risk and performance monitoring analysis takes place through effective systems of internal control and delegation
  • Leads on the coordination of engineering services
  • Takes a holistic view in the selection and application of engineering concepts and solutions
  • Support the delivery of projects in accordance with the expectations of the RED Project Delivery Process from a Project Management, Financial Management, QA/QC and Technical Review perspective


Role Requirements
  • BSc/BEng in appropriate engineering discipline or have sufficient equivalent experience
  • MCIBSE/MIEE or HND/HNC + appropriate experience or equivalent
  • Chartered Eng status
  • Significant experience of specification design for a range of building types
  • Sound knowledge & working application of key health and safety issues and legislation
  • Appreciation & working knowledge of contract & business law
  • Knowledge of MS office applications word, excel etc
  • Ability to use it based calculation and spreadsheet software
  • Good understanding of bs standards/ UK regulations/codes
  • Experience and understanding of invoicing and credit control

As an Associate / Associate Director, you will provide technical leadership to our design and assessment teams and will use your knowledge and skills to deliver the right quality to time and budget. You will use those attributes to lead design teams and to mentor and support junior team members.
**In this role your responsibilities will include:**
+ Technical leadership of a variety of bridge/ civil engineering design and assessment projects both in the - UK and overseas
+ Project reviews to optimise solutions and co-ordinate multi-disciplinary inputs
+ Managing resources and developing relationships with other teams
+ Agreeing fees and managing the commercial position on projects
+ Leading a culture of technical review and challenge
+ Developing client relationships and leading tenders/ bids
+ Supervision and mentoring of junior members of the team.

**What we will be looking for you to demonstrate.**
It is anticipated that you will be a Chartered Civil or Structural Engineer. It is expected that this experience will include the following:
+ Practical knowledge and experience of bridge design, maintenance and assessment, gained from working on both construction sites and the design office;
+ Practical knowledge and experience of project management of bridge projects;
+ Proven knowledge in design, maintenance and supervision of structures related projects together with a track record of innovation in design and management of structures. Ideally this should include new build, maintenance, assessment and strengthening of bridges and civil structures infrastructure;
+ Proven working knowledge of the Design Manual for Roads and Bridges (DMRB) and Manual of Contract Documents for Highway Works (MCDHW) in relation to structural schemes;
+ Understanding and experience of use of Eurocodes and their application to bridge design;
+ Experience of design in or assessment of steel, reinforced and prestressed concrete bridge structures;
+ Experience of grillage, space frame and finite element analysis software packages such as LUSAS, Superstress and SAM;
+ Good communication, client handling and interpersonal skills are essential, plus a willingness to adapt to new challenges and to actively participate in the development of the bridges team.
