We are currently hiring for a Sr Scientist - Automation to join our client at their site in Stevenage, UK.
Role Responsibilities:
+ Identifies automation opportunities, proposes prioritized solutions and analyses potential values using with value assessment criteria and priority scoring
+ Work with Project Manager to develop automation roadmap using AHA, including building a project dashboard to track progress and track value analysis
+ Deliver automation projects by leading automation development lifecycle from inception to potential industrialisation including specification, design, architecture and coordination with stakeholders
+ Design the architecture for closed-loop automation system, which includes both robotic systems and the software integration. Ensure the design meets all technical and business requirements
+ Design, build and maintain robotic systems tailored for the automation processes.
+ Deploy Dashboard to measure and monitor progress against metrics which includes designing and development of the dashboard and overseeing implementation
+ Support automation community by increasing active participation and engagement, including forum posts, workshops or knowledge-sharing sessions
+ Develop and maintain a sustained model of resourcing, ensuring appropriate service level agreements (SLAs) are in place with equipment providers.
**Education:**
Bachelor's degree preferably in Informatics, Software Development, Automation Engineering or equivalent and relevant formal academic / vocational qualification
Previous experience that provides the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the job (comparable to 3+ years).
In some cases an equivalency, consisting of a combination of appropriate education, training and/or directly related experience, will be considered sufficient for an individual to meet the requirements of the role.
**Required Skills/Experience**
**Process Automation** :
+ Experience in automation within the biopharmaceutical or pharmaceutical industry or another industry. GMP experience required.
+ Good understanding of the biopharmaceutical/pharmaceutical development process.
+ Expertise in commissioning and validation of automation systems.
+ Understanding of device networking and communication protocols.
+ Experience in installing and servicing large integrated systems.
+ Experience in automation controllers and process control (PLCs, Microcontrollers, knowledge of GAMP 5 is a plus).
**Software and Protocols** :
+ Experience writing protocols in Evoware and Venus software
+ Experience in the design, programming, start-up, commissioning, and troubleshooting of integrated laboratory equipment with electronic data and archive systems.
+ Prior experience supporting the validation of lab computer systems.
+ Proficiency in the general functions of sample management and relational databases.
**Programming Languages and Management Systems** :
+ Experience coding in Python
+ Experience with LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) design and administration.
+ Preferred technologies: SAP, Labware, LIMS, ELN, OpenLab, Empower, OneCDS, Hamilton, Beckman Coulter, Thermo Scientific, automated liquid handlers.
**Analytical Techniques and Automation** :
+ Experience developing and executing biopharmaceutical/pharmaceutical assays/methods and operating/troubleshooting laboratory equipment.
+ Familiarity with current industry trends in lab automation.
+ Experience with automated/automating data flows from testing design through analytical equipment and into LIMS/ELN systems.
**Process Design and Systems Administration** :
+ Experience with process mapping and workflow design to deliver fully integrated solutions.

**Interpersonal Skills** :

Our client, a global leader in advanced manufacturing, is actively seeking a highly skilled Senior Process Automation Engineer to join their fully remote, innovative engineering team. This role is paramount in driving efficiency, quality, and safety across manufacturing operations through the design, implementation, and optimization of automated systems. You will be responsible for developing robust automation solutions, troubleshooting complex issues, and leading projects from concept to commissioning. The ideal candidate will possess extensive experience in PLC programming, HMI development, SCADA systems, robotics, and industrial communication networks. You will work closely with production teams, R&D, and management to identify opportunities for automation, reduce operational costs, and enhance production capabilities. This is a remote-first position, offering the flexibility to work from anywhere in the UK while contributing to transformative automation projects. We are looking for a proactive problem-solver with a deep understanding of industrial automation principles and a passion for leveraging technology to improve manufacturing processes. Key Responsibilities:
  • Design, develop, program, and commission automated control systems for manufacturing processes.
  • Select and integrate PLCs, HMIs, SCADA systems, VFDs, and industrial robots.
  • Develop and maintain electrical schematics, control panel layouts, and network diagrams.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve complex automation system issues in real-time, minimizing downtime.
  • Lead automation projects from initial concept through to successful implementation and validation.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including mechanical engineering, operations, and maintenance, to define automation requirements and solutions.
  • Develop and implement preventative maintenance strategies for automated equipment.
  • Optimize existing automation systems to improve efficiency, throughput, and product quality.
  • Stay current with the latest advancements in automation technology and industry best practices.
  • Provide technical support and training to plant personnel on automated systems.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant safety standards and regulations (e.g., machine safety, functional safety).
  • Contribute to the development of long-term automation strategies and roadmaps.
Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Automation Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 7 years of hands-on experience in industrial automation engineering.
  • Proficiency in programming various PLC platforms (e.g., Siemens, Rockwell/Allen-Bradley, Mitsubishi).
  • Experience with HMI/SCADA software development and configuration.
  • Knowledge of industrial robotics programming and integration (e.g., Fanuc, KUKA, ABB).
  • Familiarity with industrial networks (e.g., Ethernet/IP, Profinet, Modbus TCP).
  • Strong understanding of control system design, electrical engineering principles, and functional safety.
  • Excellent problem-solving, analytical, and troubleshooting skills.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal abilities, suitable for remote collaboration.
  • Ability to manage projects and work independently with minimal supervision.
