Job Role:

A vacancy has arisen for a professional Senior Mechanical Engineer to work within Weapon Systems UK on the M777 Lifecycle Sustainment Contract.

As part of Platforms and Services organisation, Weapon Systems (UK)designs, develops, manufactures and supports artillery systems, naval guns, small and medium calibre barrels and provides engineering capability to the wider business. Our global reach brings our customers a depth and breadth of expertise that meet critical needs in the air, on land, and at sea.

The engineering role is based at our UK site at Barrow-in-Furness and is supported by a design team which includes Electronics, Software and Mechanical engineering disciplines.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the development of solutions to technical issues as a member of an integrated project team, reporting to Technical Leads and directly to the customer.
  • Developing design solutions based on customer or internally derived requirements, validating, and verifying through the design process.
  • Review and check design work and technical reports, providing help and direction to less experienced engineers.
  • Carrying out technical analysis and investigations and preparing reports with suggested recommendations to support the resolution of problems and the improvement of engineering capability.
  • Planning, delivering, and monitoring assigned projects or work packages, ensuring that requirements are delivered to plan.
  • Populate design development documentation using a Formal Design Review process through the stages of:
    • Requirements & Root Cause Analysis
    • Developing Candidate Solutions
    • Candidate down selection and risk reduction
    • Development for manufacture
    • Qualification
  • Concept generation and development of weapons sub systems.
  • Develop designs in line with requirements and all quality and technical standards.
  • Perform technical investigations, including evaluation of technical options, supporting calculations and preparation of reports with recommendations.
  • Participate in internal and external meetings or design reviews.
  • Definition and control of interfaces via interface control drawings and space envelopes.
  • Ensuring that the product will operate safely and reliably in the military operating environment, and can be manufactured cost effectively.
  • Preparing 3D models, 2D drawings, and other technical outputs, consistent with the contractual requirements to meet target dates and budget demands.
  • Support quality related to production NCR’s (non-conformance reports) and first article inspection.
  • Interface with related supporting functions such as Procurement and Quality.
  • Design of components for ease of manufacture and aiding in productionisation of products.

Educational Background:

The candidate will have ideally been educated to degree level or equivalent in a mechanical engineering discipline with at least 3 years postgraduate experience within an engineering environment, or to HNC level with 5 years relevant experience.

Essential Experience / Skills:

  • Working experience using CAD software (ideally PTC Creo Parametric)
  • CAD design and modelling experience (3D modelling of components, assemblies) (2D drawing of components, assemblies, etc.) – preferably mechanical design and familiar with the Creo Parametric CAD Package.
  • Finite Element Analysis experience (specifically linear analysis for strength of design and worked examples on pressure equipment (pressure vessels)).
  • Experience writing engineering concessions, producing technical reports and answering technical queries from a supplier or for a customer.
    • Previous production, manufacturing and assembly experience
    • Familiarity with engineering drawing standards and geometric dimensioning and tolerancing
    • Working knowledge of technical office processes, standards and standard instructions (i.e. Business Management System (BMS) and the Life Cycle Model (LCM))
    • Analytical and problem-solving skills
    • Presentation / report writing skills

Desirable Experience / Skills:

Concept generation and development of weapons sub systems.nDevelop designs in line with requirements and all quality and technical standards.nPerform technical investigations, including evaluation of technical options, supporting calculations and preparation of reports with recommendations.nParticipate in internal and external meetings or design reviews.nDefinition and control of interfaces via interface control drawings and space envelopes.nEnsuring that the product will operate safely and reliably in the military operating environment, and can be manufactured cost effectively.nPreparing 3D models, 2D drawings, and other technical outputs, consistent with the contractual requirements to meet target dates and budget demands.nSupport quality related to production NCR's (non-conformance reports) and first article inspection.nInterface with related supporting functions such as Procurement and Quality.nDesign of components for ease of manufacture and aiding in productionisation of products.nEducational Background:nThe candidate will have ideally been educated to degree level or equivalent in a mechanical engineering discipline with at least 3 years postgraduate experience within an engineering environment, or to HNC level with 5 years relevant experience.nEssential Experience / Skills:nWorking experience using CAD software (ideally PTC Creo Parametric)nCAD design and modelling experience (3D modelling of components, assemblies) (2D drawing of components, assemblies, etc.) – preferably mechanical design and familiar with the Creo Parametric CAD Package.nFinite Element Analysis experience (specifically linear analysis for strength of design and worked examples on pressure equipment (pressure vessels)).nExperience writing engineering concessions, producing technical reports and answering technical queries from a supplier or for a customer.

Previous production, manufacturing and assembly experiencenFamiliarity with engineering drawing standards and geometric dimensioning and tolerancingnWorking knowledge of technical office processes, standards and standard instructions (i.e. Business Management System (BMS) and the Life Cycle Model (LCM))nAnalytical and problem-solving skillsnPresentation / report writing skills

Desirable Experience / Skills:nHand calculation experience: specifically strength of design calcs, pressure vessel calcs (desirable).

Engineering background in a weapons system or design for military usenWorking experience using Product Lifecycle Management software (ideally Teamcenter)nStructural / Stress analysis (MS Excel, Mathcad, FEA {PTC Simulate / Ansys})nMaterial selection and manufacturing techniques
