University of the Arts London (UAL) is embarking on an ambitious strategic refresh under our new Vice-Chancellor, and we are looking for a Process Improvement Specialist to transform how we work. This hands-on, high-impact role offers a unique opportunity to work across academic and professional services teams, redesigning processes that enhance both the student and staff experience while increasing operational efficiency.

You will take the lead in mapping, analysing, and redesigning complex institutional processes, working closely with senior leaders and cross-functional teams to identify areas of friction, duplication, or inefficiency. Using your expertise in methodologies like Lean, Six Sigma, Kaizen, and service design, you will turn detailed analysis into practical improvements, embedding new ways of working that are sustainable, measurable, and aligned with UAL’s strategic ambitions.

In addition, you will provide expert advice to senior leaders, plan and evaluate process pilots, and champion the adoption of new ways of working across the university, helping to ensure that UAL’s systems and processes are joined-up, student-centred, and future-ready.

About you

You bring substantial experience in process improvement, business analysis, or organisational change, ideally gained within large, complex, multi-stakeholder environments.

Highly analytical and detail-oriented, you are skilled at streamlining workflows, embedding sustainable improvements, and translating complex processes into actionable insights. You thrive on collaboration, leading workshops, and co-designing solutions with diverse stakeholders, using recognised improvement methodologies to deliver measurable results and embed lasting change. Strong influencing skills enable you to guide senior leaders and teams in adopting and iterating new ways of working.

Experience in higher education or the creative sector is highly valued, as are advanced skills in digital process design and visualisation tools.

This role offers the opportunity to drive meaningful change across our manufacturing processes, with a focus on improving Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE), reducing operational costs, and optimising plant performance. Working closely with cross-functional teams, you will lead improvement initiatives, challenge existing practices, and help shape a more efficient and resilient operation.


Role Responsibilities


  • Lead initiatives to improve Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) by analysing performance data and addressing the root causes of losses in availability, performance, and quality
  • Identify production bottlenecks and throughput constraints, developing and implementing practical solutions to increase flow and plant capacity
  • Champion continuous improvement by challenging existing processes and introducing innovative ideas and technologies
  • Establish clear metrics and a robust tracking system to monitor progress and quantify the financial impact of improvement projects
  • Act as a key liaison between Maintenance, Production, Quality, and Projects to ensure improvement initiatives are well-planned, resourced, and executed
  • Identify and deliver cost-saving opportunities across operational functions, contributing directly to bottom-line performance
  • Develop and maintain current and future state process maps and value stream maps to highlight opportunities for waste elimination and efficiency gains
  • Conduct a comprehensive review of site capacity and present a phased roadmap for capacity improvement, including timelines and expected returns
  • Support year-on-year reduction in overall site operational costs through successful implementation of improvement projects


Requirements


  • Demonstrated experience in an operational or continuous improvement role within a manufacturing or industrial environment, ideally on a COMAH site
  • Strong technical understanding of OEE principles and bottleneck analysis, with experience in Lean, Six Sigma, or Theory of Constraints highly desirable
  • Excellent problem-solving skills with a track record of identifying and resolving complex operational challenges
  • Strong communication skills, with the ability to engage effectively across all levels of the organisation
  • Demonstrated ability to influence and drive change, building consensus for new ways of working
  • Resilient and determined, with a proactive approach to overcoming challenges and delivering results
