A little more about your role:

As an Offshore Cable Design / Analysis Engineer, you will be expected to provide day-to-day expertise to the Offshore Cables Engineering team on both cable design, analysis and hardware design activities, making key technical decisions commensurate with your experience. The role is client facing and will involve weekly meetings with WSP's clients. Therefore, a strong ability to communicate effectively and accordingly is required supporting the Project Managers and Lead Offshore Engineer with project deliverables specific to the HVAC / HVDC Offshore Cable element.
  • The role includes the support of junior members of the team, with training, guidance and knowledge transfer.
  • Alongside HVAC Inter Array Cables, the team requires the offshore cable design engineer to support design works for HVDC Interconnectors up to 525kV. This role requires an understanding of the growing HVDC interconnector market and its requirements. The role will involve design of the cable element and critical interface with the HVDC Team whereby the onshore converter station and grid connection design is managed.
  • Conduct detailed design engineering for new projects, collaborating with other departments to ensure understanding of all customer/project requirements and to support the Proposals, Purchasing, Project Management, Quality and Production teams.
  • Depending upon the project and requirements, the role will involve review of client specifications, vendor documentation.

General Deliverables:
  • Electrical & mechanical designs, calculations, specification and report writing for HVAC and HVDC cables in accordance with industry standards and best practices.

    • Accessories include but not limited to: T-Connectors, Dropper Cables, CPS, Pull-in Equipment, Hang-Offs, Cable Cleats Breakaway systems, glands and temporary abandonment systems.
  • Cable Protection System specification generation in support of procurement activities / vendor or client requirements.
    • Understanding of Bend Restrictors, Bend Stiffeners, J-Tube Sealing, Buoyancy Modules is required.
  • Installation, Operation and Maintenance procedure or guideline generation.
  • Employer requirements, creation of technical documentation to support WSP's clients with their procurement process.
    • Understanding of PQQ, ITT processes and an ability to advise accordingly.
    • Requirement for vendor engagement and interface coordination in support of works.
  • Understanding of inter array cable layout and requirements.
  • The role will require in certain projects the review of GIS data. The output being to advise a client on subsea cable routing, adjust route positions accordingly or advise on CBRA / BAS requirements.

What we will be looking for you to demonstrate:
  • You must have an understanding of all the key elements of cable design and manufacture, with a thorough understanding of the selection process with knowledge of the electrical cores, sheath, armour and outer layers.
  • You will be experienced in Autodesk software packages, specifically Autodesk Inventor and AutoCAD, and have the ability to adapt to bespoke/non-standard software packages.
  • Must be capable of creating engineered solutions, considering all aspects of the project requirements, whilst satisfying all customer and internal requirements. With strong ability to coordinate and interface cross department internally within WSP and with external vendors and clients.
  • Critical understanding of HVAC Inter Array Cable and Export cable design, specifications and requirements is necessary. Specifically, the ability to generate documentation and cable designs for 66kV – 132kV HVAC cables. This includes Cable Design Basis, Design Reports, Current Rating and Thermal Calculations. Knowledge and ability to design static and dynamic cables is required.
  • Strong ability to operate and deliver dynamic analysis using Orcaflex software is required to support dynamic analysis, in-place analysis and modelling of dynamic cables and associated CPS / hardware (e.g. dynamic bend stiffeners, buoyancy modules and bend restrictors)
  • The candidate must be capable of forming strong working relationships with customers and suppliers.
  • The role may require travel to client's offices or site alongside potential vendor engagement.
  • An understanding of UXO is desirable.
  • An understanding of cable installation, handling and maintenance is desirable.
  • Capability to use Orcaflex Dynamic Analysis Software is desirable.
  • Onshore HVDC cable design experience and knowledge is desirable.

**About You**
You will be a pro-active individual with knowledge and understanding of the electricity transmission and distribution industry. You will have the capability to coach and work within the wider energy team.
Ideally you will have a Bachelor's/Masters degree in Electrical Engineering (or related field), from an accredited institution and professional registration as a Chartered Engineer with the Engineering Council and ICE is preferred. You will also have experience as civil substation engineer, with a wider awareness of other typical HV civil engineering projects.
Ideally you will also have the following:-
+ You will have experience in the Design (Concept, FEED, and detail design) of transmission & distribution systems - for Utility companies based on International standards.
+ Ability to carry out inter- disciplinary coordination and work effectively with leads to resolve any design issues.
+ Application of broad practical knowledge to cable design & produces - Cable installation design including cable routing layouts, trench & trenchless section layouts, cable bonding & phasing, cable pulling, termination and jointing arrangements.
+ Hands on experience/working knowledge of CYMCAP software and perform cable sizing calculations based on international standards.
+ Capable of working under challenging workload subject to change at short notice.
+ Proficiency in MS Outlook, and MS Office (Excel, Word and PowerPoint)
+ Proficiency in AutoCAD or MicroStation.
